Neuronal loss, gliosis and axonal sprouting in the hippocampal formation are characteristics of the syndrome of mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS). In the post-status epilepticus (SE) rat model of spontaneous seizures these features of the MTS syndrome can be reproduced.
