TiO₂/porous carbon as a new nanocomposite and catalyst for the preparation of 4H-pyrimido[2,1-b]benzimidazoles.

ABSTRACT: A nano TiO₂/porous carbon nanocomposite (TiO₂/PCN) was designed by the pyrolysis of peanut shells as bio waste with nano titanium dioxide. In the presented nanocomposite, titanium dioxide is properly placed in the positions and pores of the porous carbon, so that it acts as an optimal catalyst in the nanocomposite structure. The structure of TiO₂/PCN was studied by various analyses such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), SEM coupled EDX (SEM mapping), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and BET. TiO₂/PCN was successfully tested as a nano catalyst for the preparation of some 4H-pyrimido[2,1-b]benzimidazoles in high yields (90-97%) and short reaction times (45-80 min).

Project description:A porous carbon/Fe3O4 nanocomposite (PC/Fe3O4 nanocomposite) was prepared through the pyrolysis of peanut shells as biowaste with ferrous ferric oxide to give a new magnetically recoverable catalyst. In the designed nanocomposite, magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are properly distributed on the surface and cavities of porous carbon obtained from biomass. Increasing the active surface and magnetic recovery capability results in catalytic synergy, thereby promoting the reaction with an appropriate catalytic effect. The catalytic ability of the porous carbon/Fe3O4 nanocomposite as a nanomagnetically recoverable catalyst was successfully tested for the synthesis of polyhydroquinolines.

Ag@TiO2 Nanocomposite as an Efficient Catalyst for Knoevenagel Condensation.

Project description:In the present study, a new series of different heterocycles was synthesized through base-free Knoevenagel condensation of various aldehydes and active methylene-containing compounds using the hydrothermal developed Ag@TiO2 as a heterogeneous catalyst. The catalyst was synthesized by mixing TiO2 (P25) with AgNO3 and hydrothermally treated in ethanol at 180 °C for 12 h. The developed Ag@TiO2 catalyst was directly applied for Knoevenagel condensation, and the optimized procedure involved stirring the aldehydes and active methylene-containing compounds with Ag@TiO2 in ethanol at 65 °C. The reaction scope was investigated for various aromatic and heterocyclic aldehydes with active methylene-containing compounds, and the isolated yields were significantly high. The reusability of the catalyst was investigated for up to five cycles, where an insignificant decrease in the catalyst's reactivity was observed. Also, the reaction could proceed in water as a solvent, and the isolated yield was 40%. Hence, this protocol features mild reaction conditions, a facile procedure, and clean reaction profiles.

A magnetic-void-porous MnFe2O4/carbon microspheres nano-catalyst for catalytic ozonation: Preparation, performance and mechanism.

Project description:Wastewater treatment is essential to guarantee human health and ecological security. Catalytic ozonation with nanocatalysts is a widely studied and efficient treatment technology. However, this method has always been limited by nanocatalysts disadvantages such as easily loss, difficult to separate and reuse, and catalytic ability decay caused by aggregation, which could cause severe resources waste and potential risk to human health and ecosystem. To remedy these challenges, a magnetic-void-porous MnFe2O4/carbon microsphere shell nanocatalyst (CMS-MnFe2O4) was successfully synthesized using renewable natural microalgae. The separation test showed CMS-MnFe2O4 was rapidly separated within 2 min under an external magnetic field. In catalytic ozonation of oxalic acid (OA), CMS-MnFe2O4 showed efficient and stable catalytic efficiency, reaching a maximum total organic carbon removal efficiency of 96.59 % and maintained a 93.88 % efficiency after 4 cycles. The stable catalytic efficiency was due to the supporting effects of the carbon microsphere shell, which significantly enhanced CMS-MnFe2O4 chemical stability and reduced the metal ions leaching to 10-20 % of MnFe2O4 through electron transfer. To explore the catalytic mechanism, radical experiments were conducted and a new degradation pathway of OA involving superoxide anions rather than hydroxyl radicals was proposed. Consequently, this study suggests that an efficient, recyclable, stable, and durable catalyst for catalytic ozonation could be prepared.

TiO2/Porous Carbon Composite-Decorated Separators for Lithium/Sulfur Battery.

Project description:The practical application of lithium/sulfur (Li/S) batteries is hindered by the migration of soluble polysulfides (Li2Sn, 4 ≤ n ≤ 8) from cathode to anode, leading to poor electrochemical stability of the cell. To address this issue, in the present study, a TiO2/porous carbon (TiO2/PC) composite-coated Celgard 2400 separator was successfully fabricated and used as a polysulfide barrier for the Li/S battery. In TiO2/PC, the highly conductive PC with three-dimensional ordered porous structure physically constrains polysulfides and at the same time serves as an additional upper current collector. On the other hand, the TiO2 on the surface of PC chemically adsorbed polysulfides during the charge/discharge process. Due to the physical and chemical adsorption properties of TiO2/PC composite coating layer, an initial discharge capacity of 926 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C and a low fading rate (75% retention after 150 cycles) were achieved. Moreover, in the rate capability test, the discharge capacity for the TiO2/PC-modified Li/S battery was recovered to 728 mAh g-1 at 0.1 C after high-rate cycling and remained ~ 88% of the initial reversible capacity.

Preparation and Performance of Porous Carbon Nanocomposite from Renewable Phenolic Resin and Halloysite Nanotube.

Project description:The growing demand for high performance from supercapacitors has inspired the development of porous nanocomposites using renewable and naturally available materials. In this work, a formaldehyde-free phenolic resin using monosaccharide-based furfural was synthesized to act as the carbon precursor. One dimensional halloysite nanotube (HNT) with high porosity and excellent cation/anion exchange capacity was mixed with the phenol-furfural resin to fabricate carbonaceous nanocomposite HNT/C. Their structure and porosity were characterized. The effects of the halloysite nanotube amount and carbonization temperature on the electrochemical properties of HNT/C were explored. HNT/C exhibited rich porosity, involving a large specific surface area 253 m2·g-1 with a total pore volume of 0.27 cm3·g-1. The electrochemical performance of HNT/C was characterized in the three-electrode system and showed enhanced specific capacitance of 146 F·g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 (68 F·g-1 for pristine carbon) in electrolyte (6 mol·L-1 KOH) and a good rate capability of 62% at 3 A g-1. It also displayed excellent cycle performance with capacitance retention of 98.5% after 500 cycles. The symmetric supercapacitors with HNT/C-1:1.5-800 electrodes were fabricated, exhibiting a high energy density of 20.28 Wh·Kg-1 at a power density of 100 W·Kg-1 in 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. The present work provides a feasible method for preparing composite electrode materials with a porous structure from renewable phenol-furfural resin and HNT. The excellent supercapacitance highlights the potential applications of HNT/C in energy storage.

Project description:Herein, nano-kaolin/Ti4+/Fe3O4 as a new magnetic nano-catalyst was synthesized, and its structural properties were characterized using various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). This catalyst was used for the synthesis of pyrimido[2,1-b]benzothiazoles via the one-pot condensation of 2-aminobenzothiazole, an aldehyde and β-keto ester under solvent-free conditions at 100 °C. This simple protocol has many advantages such as easy workup, high product yields, short reaction times and reusability of the catalyst.

TiO2-Modified Montmorillonite-Supported Porous Carbon-Immobilized Pd Species Nanocomposite as an Efficient Catalyst for Sonogashira Reactions

Project description:In this study, a combination of the porous carbon (PCN), montmorillonite (MMT), and TiO2 was synthesized into a composite immobilized Pd metal catalyst (TiO2-MMT/PCN@Pd) with effective synergism improvements in catalytic performance. The successful TiO2-pillaring modification for MMT, derivation of carbon from the biopolymer of chitosan, and immobilization of Pd species for the prepared TiO2-MMT/PCN@Pd0 nanocomposites were confirmed using a combined characterization with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, high-resolution transition electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. It was shown that the combination of PCN, MMT, and TiO2 as a composite support for the stabilization of the Pd catalysts could synergistically improve the adsorption and catalytic properties. The resultant TiO2-MMT80/PCN20@Pd0 showed a high surface area of 108.9 m2/g. Furthermore, it exhibited moderate to excellent activity (59–99% yield) and high stability (recyclable 19 times) in the liquid–solid catalytic reactions, such as the Sonogashira reactions of aryl halides (I, Br) with terminal alkynes in organic solutions. The positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) characterization sensitively detected the development of sub-nanoscale microdefects in the catalyst after long-term recycling service. This study provided direct evidence for the formation of some larger-sized microdefects during sequential recycling, which would act as leaching channels for loaded molecules, including active Pd species.

Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Deposition of Hybrid Nanocomposite Coatings Containing TiO2 and Carbon-Based Nanomaterials.

Project description:Among the different applications of TiO2, its use for the photocatalytic abatement of organic pollutants has been demonstrated particularly relevant. However, the wide band gap (3.2 eV), which requires UV irradiation for activation, and the fast electron-hole recombination rate of this n-type semiconductor limit its photocatalytic performance. A strategy to overcome these limitations relies on the realization of a nanocomposite that combines TiO2 nanoparticles with carbon-based nanomaterials, such as rGO (reduced graphene oxide) and fullerene (C60). On the other hand, the design and realization of coatings formed of such TiO2-based nanocomposite coatings are essential to make them suitable for their technological applications, including those in the environmental field. In this work, aerosol-assisted atmospheric pressure plasma deposition of nanocomposite coatings containing both TiO2 nanoparticles and carbon-based nanomaterials, as rGO or C60, in a siloxane matrix is reported. The chemical composition and morphology of the deposited films were investigated for the different types of prepared nanocomposites by means of FT-IR, FEG-SEM, and TEM analyses. The photocatalytic activity of the nanocomposite coatings was evaluated through monitoring the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) as a model organic pollutant. Results demonstrate that the nanocomposite coatings embedding rGO or C60 show enhanced photocatalytic performance with respect to the TiO2 counterpart. In particular, TiO2/C60 nanocomposites allow to achieve 85% MB degradation upon 180 min of UV irradiation.

Porous TiO2/Carbon Dot Nanoflowers with Enhanced Surface Areas for Improving Photocatalytic Activity.

Project description:Electron-hole recombination and the narrow-range utilization of sunlight limit the photocatalytic efficiency of titanium oxide (TiO2). We synthesized carbon dots (CDs) and modified TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with a flower-like mesoporous structure, i.e., porous TiO2/CDs nanoflowers. Among such hybrid particles, the CDs worked as photosensitizers for the mesoporous TiO2 and enabled the resultant TiO2/CDs nanoflowers with a wide-range light absorption. Rhodamine B (Rh-B) was employed as a model organic pollutant to investigate the photocatalytic activity of the TiO2/CDs nanoflowers. The results demonstrated that the decoration of the CDs on both the TiO2 nanoflowers and the (commercially available AEROXIDE TiO2) P25 NPs enabled a significant improvement in the photocatalytic degradation efficiency compared with the pristine TiO2. The TiO2/CDs nanoflowers, with their porous structure and larger surface areas compared to P25, showed a higher efficiency to prevent local aggregation of carbon materials. All of the results revealed that the introduced CDs, with the unique mesoporous structure, large surface areas and loads of pore channels of the prepared TiO2 NPs, played important roles in the enhancement of the photocatalytic efficiency of the TiO2/CDs hybrid nanoflowers.

Metal sensing-carbon dots loaded TiO2-nanocomposite for photocatalytic bacterial deactivation and application in aquaculture.

Project description:Nowadays, bioactive nanomaterials have been attracted the researcher's enthusiasm in various fields. Herein, Diplocyclos palmatus leaf extract-derived green-fluorescence carbon dots (DP-CDs) were prepared using the hydrothermal method. Due to the strong fluorescence stability, the prepared DP-CDs were coated on filter-paper to make a fluorometric sensor-strip for Fe3+ detection. After, a bandgap-narrowed DP-CDs/TiO2 nanocomposite (DCTN) was prepared using the methanolic extract of D. palmatus. The prepared DCTN exhibited improved photocatalytic bacterial deactivation under sunlight irradiation. The DCTN-photocatalysis slaughtered V. harveyi cells by the production of reactive oxygen species, which prompting oxidative stress, damaging the cell membrane and cellular constituents. These results suggest the plausible mode of bactericidal action of DCTN-photocatalysis under sunlight. Further, the DCTN has shown potent anti-biofilm activity against V. harveyi, and thereby, DCTN extended the survival of V. harveyi-infected shrimps during the in vivo trial with Litopenaeus vannamei. Notably, this is the first report for the disinfection of V. harveyi-mediated acute-hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) using nanocomposite. The reduced internal-colonization of V. harveyi on the hepatopancreas as well as the rescue action of the pathognomonic effect in the experimental animals demonstrated the anti-infection potential of DCTN against V. harveyi-mediated AHPND in aquaculture.
