This report identifies, for the first time, a phytochelatin compound, phytochelatin 2 [γ-E-C-γ-E-C-G], and related metabolites in human urine. Phytochelatins are metal-binding peptides produced by plants. They are present in nearly all human diets, due to their ubiquity in plants. The urinary concentration of phytochelatin 2 among 143 adults was in the low micromolar range, and phytochelatin 2 and its metabolites had differential correlations with urinary selenium and toxic metals.
