Applying the Integrated Sustainability Framework to explore the long-term sustainability of nutrition education programmes in schools: a systematic review.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

This review aimed to identify and synthesise the enablers and barriers that influence the long-term (≥ 2 years) sustainment of school-based nutrition programmes.

Design

Four databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and Scopus) were searched to identify studies reporting on the international literature relating to food and nutrition programmes aimed at school-age (5-14 years) children that had been running for ≥ 2 years (combined intervention and follow-up period). Eligible studies were analysed using the Integrated Sustainability Framework (ISF), which involved deductive coding of programme enablers and barriers. A quality assessment was completed, using the Mixed-Methods Appraisal Tool and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines.

Results

From the 7366 articles identified, thirteen studies (seven qualitative, five mixed methods and one quantitative descriptive) were included, from which the enablers and barriers of eleven different nutrition-related programmes were analysed. Thirty-four factors across the five domains of the ISF were identified that influenced the sustained implementation of programmes. The most common barrier was a lack of organisational readiness and resources, whereas the most common enabler was having adequate external partnerships and a supportive environment.

Conclusions

These findings have application during the initiation and implementation phases of school-based nutrition programmes. Paying attention to the 'outer contextual factors' of the ISF including the establishment and maintenance of robust relationships across whole of government systems, local institutions and funding bodies are crucial for programme sustainment.

Project description:BackgroundHealthy eating patterns from sustainable food systems are crucial for population and planetary health. Primary schools are opportune settings for teaching children about food, nutrition and sustainability (FNS) though little is known about the delivery of FNS education in this sector. This study aimed to analyse current approaches to FNS education in Australian primary schools.MethodsA cross-sectional online survey with closed- and open-ended questions collected data about (i) teacher perceptions and attributes regarding FNS education; (ii) FNS teaching practices; and (iii) factors influencing FNS education. Statistical analyses were conducted using STATA including descriptive statistics and chi-square analyses to test for associations between categorical variables. Qualitative content and thematic analyses of open-ended questions were conducted using NVivo 14.ResultsParticipants were 413 Australian primary school teachers. Teachers considered FNS education as equally important to most curriculum subjects, though frequency of FNS education was low. Less than a third of teachers were trained in FNS education, had access to funding for FNS-related activities or were from schools with policies about including FNS education in the curriculum. There was a significant association between frequency of FNS education and teacher training, access to funding and presence of FNS curriculum policies (all p < 0.001). Teachers who were trained to teach nutrition, food skills or food sustainability (all p < 0.05) were more likely to teach this as both stand-alone and cross-curricular subjects. Teachers described personal factors (workload, stress, scope of practice) that influenced their FNS teaching practices, as well as factors related to students' families (family responsibility for FNS education, family food practices, family engagement in FNS activities), the curriculum (overcrowding, prioritisation, access to resources) and the broader school environment (time, facilities, funding, training).ConclusionsStrengthening the position of FNS education in the primary school sector is an important next step for public health research, policy and practice. Researchers and policy makers should explore future opportunities for training, funding and policy approaches that prioritise FNS within the primary school curriculum and in everyday teaching practice.

Project description:ObjectiveAn increasing number of children in the Netherlands is overweight or obese, which is largely attributable to an unhealthy lifestyle and unhealthy living environment. Nutrition education and greening the schoolyard, for example with a vegetable garden, have independently been studied and are shown to be effective in teaching children a healthy lifestyle and providing a healthy living environment. However, the feasibility of combining nutrition education and greening the schoolyard has not been studied yet. Therefore, this study aimed to provide insight into primary schools' vision on making this combination, and the feasibility of doing so.MethodsIn this study a qualitative research design was used. The theoretical frameworks of Proctor et al. and Sekhon et al. were used to develop the interview guide. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with members of school teams and school directors. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using the thematical analysis of Braun and Clarke.ResultsAccording to the interviewees, three facets are essential to make the combination of greening schoolyards and nutrition education feasible and successful. Firstly, the interviewees mentioned that the school team and school directors of schools must be able to see the connection between greening the schoolyard and nutrition education. Additionally, support is needed among the parents, school team, pupils and local community. Finally, the interviewees stated that schools must be able to integrate greening the schoolyard and nutrition education into their existing curriculum.ConclusionsThe results of this study showed that combining greening schoolyards and nutrition education in primary schools is feasible and successful when vision, support and integration are present. Future research should investigate the vision of the local community and parents on making the combination, and the effects of the combination on pupils and their environment.

Project description:BackgroundTechnological platforms provide online support systems for teaching and learning colleges and universities. However, some colleges seem to be not benefiting from these online support systems. The current paper explores the use of technological platforms in nursing education colleges by incorporating the e-learning Context Design Delivery and Outcomes (el-CDDO) framework to demonstrate the benefit of applying the technological platforms. The e-learning Context Design Delivery and Outcomes (el-CDDO) framework has been applied and is beneficial in non-nursing disciplines; however, there has been little scholarly attention paid to the use of this framework to support the delivery of information and communication technology (ICT) platforms in nursing education.AimTo adopt the el-CDDO framework in exploring the perceptions of learner nurses and nurse educators about information and communication technology platforms at the Limpopo College of Nursing.MethodThe exploratory-descriptive qualitative research design was adopted to explore the perceptions of learner nurses and nurse educators regarding ICT platforms that support teaching, learning, and assessment in the colleges of nursing within Limpopo Province. Focus group discussions were held with purposively selected learner nurses and nurse educators to collect qualitative data. Thematic qualitative data analysis was used to make sense of collected data according to the five dimensions of the el-CDDO framework.ResultsSix dimensions of the framework highlighted the perceptions of learner nurses and nurse educators about the use of ICT platforms. The perceptions are summarised as the learning context, benefits, enabling and barriers as influencing factors. Benefits include enhanced skills, knowledge, and quick thinking necessary for academic progress and patient care. Enabling factors include the willingness of learner nurses and nurse educators to use ICT platforms. Barriers include insufficient training on ICT platforms, lack of a structured ICT-integrated curriculum, and inadequate ICT skills among lecturers.ConclusionThe el-CDDO framework proved effective in exploring the perceptions of learner nurses and nurse educators about the use of ICT platforms in nursing education institutions. We recommend using the framework to assess the state of ICT platforms in nursing education institutions.
