The role of attitudes towards contradiction in psychological resilience: the cortical mechanism of conflicting resolution networks.

ABSTRACT: Managing contradictions and building resilience help us overcome life's challenges. Here, we explored the link between attitudes towards contradictions and psychological resilience, examining the role of cortical conflict resolution networks. We enlisted 173 healthy young adults and used questionnaires to evaluate their cognitive thinking styles and resilience. They underwent structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. Our results revealed that contrasting attitudes toward contradictions, formal logic, and naïve dialecticism thinking styles corresponded with varying degrees of resilience. We noted structural and functional differences in brain networks related to conflict resolution, including the inferior frontal and parietal cortices. The volumetric variations within cortical networks indicated right-hemispheric lateralization in different thinking styles. These findings highlight the potential links between conflict resolution and resilience in the frontoparietal network. We underscore the importance of frontoparietal brain networks for executive control in resolving conflicting information and regulating the impact of contradictions on psychological resilience.

Project description:BackgroundIndividuals who have experienced severe traumatic events are estimated to have a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence rate ranging from 10 to 50%, while those not affected by trauma exposure are often considered to possess psychological resilience. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the development of PTSD, especially resilience after trauma, remain unclear. This study aims to investigate changes of cortical morphometric similarity network (MSN) in PTSD and trauma-exposed healthy individuals (TEHI), as well as the associated molecular alterations in gene expression, providing potential targets for the prevention and intervention of PTSD.MethodsWe recruited PTSD patients and TEHI who had experienced severe earthquakes, and healthy controls who had not experienced earthquakes. We identified alterations in the whole-brain MSN changes in PTSD and TEHI, and established associations between these changes and brain-wide gene expression patterns from the Allen Human Brain Atlas microarray dataset using partial least squares regression.ResultsAt the neuroimaging level, we found not only trauma-susceptible changes in TEHI same as those in PTSD, but also unique neurobiological alterations to counteract the deleterious impact of severe trauma. We identified 1444 and 2214 genes transcriptionally related to MSN changes in PTSD and TEHI, respectively. Functional enrichment analysis of weighted gene expression for PTSD and TEHI revealed distinct enrichments in Gene Ontology biological processes and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways. Furthermore, gene expression profiles of astrocytes, excitatory neurons, and microglial cells are highly related to MSN abnormalities in PTSD.ConclusionsThe formation of resilience may be by an active compensatory process of the brain. The combination of macroscopic neuroimaging changes and microscopic human brain transcriptomics could offer a more direct and in-depth understanding of the pathogenesis of PTSD and psychological resilience, shedding light on new targets for the prevention and treatment of PTSD.

Project description:BackgroundAcceptability of digital mental health interventions is a significant predictor of treatment-seeking behavior and engagement. However, acceptability has been conceptualized and operationalized in various ways, which decreases measurement precision and leads to heterogeneous conclusions about acceptability. Standardized self-report measures of acceptability have been developed, which have the potential to ameliorate these problems, but none have demonstrated evidence for validation among Black communities, which limits our understanding of attitudes toward these interventions among racially minoritized groups with well-documented barriers to mental health treatment.ObjectiveThis study aims to examine the psychometric validity and reliability of one of the first and most widely used measures of acceptability, the Attitudes Towards Psychological Online Interventions Questionnaire, among a Black American sample.MethodsParticipants (N=254) were recruited from a large southeastern university and the surrounding metropolitan area and completed the self-report measure via a web-based survey. A confirmatory factor analysis using mean and variance adjusted weighted least squares estimation was conducted to examine the validity of the underlying hierarchical 4-factor structure proposed by the original authors of the scale. An alternative, hierarchical 2-factor structure model and bifactor model were examined for comparative fit.ResultsThe findings indicated that the bifactor model demonstrated a superior fit (comparative fit index=0.96, Tucker-Lewis index=0.94, standardized root mean squared residual=0.03, and root mean square error of approximation=0.09) compared with both 2- and 4-factor hierarchical structure models.ConclusionsThe findings suggest that, within a Black American sample, there may be greater utility in interpreting the Attitudes Towards Psychological Online Interventions Questionnaire subscales as attitudinal constructs that are distinct from the global acceptability factor. The theoretical and practical implications for culturally responsive measurements were explored.
