Beta (β)-galactosidase is a lysosomal enzyme that removes terminal galactose residues from glycolipids and glycoproteins. It is upregulated in, and used as a marker for, senescent cells. Microglia are brain macrophages implicated in neurodegeneration, and can upregulate β-galactosidase when senescent.
