Project description:BackgroundAlthough progress has been made in evolution education, many educators face significant barriers in their efforts to teach evolution specifically, and science in general. The purpose of this study was to identify faculty-perceived barriers to teaching evolution, specifically in religiously affiliated institutions or institutions with a highly religious student body, as well as resources faculty feel would help promote discourse around faith, evolution and science. To do this, we held a workshop with teams consisting of a science professor, a theologian and a pastor (of the predominant on-campus faith tradition) from 17 different institutions of higher education with highly religious student bodies for the purpose of helping them to create a curriculum to address perceived conflicts between science and faith. During the workshop, participants created posters identifying barriers they face and resources they perceive as helpful. These posters were analyzed for prevalent themes and framed within an ecological model of behavior.ResultsThese teams identified prevalent barriers at each level of the ecological model. Intrapersonal factors included a fear of rocking the boat and a fear of student conflict. Interpersonal factors included perceived student lack of knowledge, student ideology, and student apathy. Institutional factors included work politics, a lack of relevant discourse surrounding the conflict, and mixed messaging to students. Community factors included social norms associated with various student demographics. And public policy factors included local and state government attempts to limit the teaching of evolution. Additionally, participants identified resources that they felt would facilitate overcoming conflict including colleagues as change agents, various assets, and tools to negate conflict.ConclusionsWe determined that many of the concerns are addressable, and many resources are attainable. We urge the community to work toward these solutions. Additionally, we compare our findings to what the literature has shown and discuss the implications of faculty perceptions as compared to the published literature.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1186/s12052-021-00151-1.

Project description:The goal of this study is both to determine the opinion that professors and students at the university have of active methodologies and to describe the perception and opinion of the modes of organization, methodological focuses, and evaluation systems that define the teaching-learning process. On surveying the professors and the students in their classes, we found significant differences in 32 of the 92 variables in common. The content of these results shows that professors and students are believe they are making progress toward a learning-centered model, that implementation of active methodologies implies new functions in their teaching practice.

Project description:BackgroundCancellation of surgeries is a regular phenomenon in any hospital, and reasons may vary from clinical to managerial ones. The aim of the study is to suggest scheduling to address the problem of time over run related cancellations. This is an observational and descriptive study conducted in a tertiary care hospital with ophthalmology facilities. The sample size is calculated with 95% confidence interval using Epi Info 6 from the total surgeries performed in the last 5 years (n = 380). Simple random sampling technique was used.MethodsSurgical time for all types of ophthalmic surgeries (n = 582) was observed. Allocation of listed cases to the available operating rooms (ORs) was carried out using the observed time using LEKIN software.ResultsThe time over-run of 2 h and 6 h was noted for two units, whereas idle OR time was observed in other units. An average idle time of 19% was noted on each day. Reallocation of the cases to the ORs was carried out taking all the planned cases (of both the operating units of the day) as the number of jobs and all the available ORs as parallel machines using LEKIN software. All the planned cases could be accommodated; still, an average of 17% of the total available operation theater (OT) time was found idle on each day.ConclusionsPlanning of cases using procedure time and scheduling on a daily basis using allocation models with simple algorithms can provide optimal utilization of OTs and can address the time over-run and related cancellations.

Project description:The present study introduces the qualitative and quantitative results obtained in a pilot study of emergency remote teaching (ERT) evaluation in Indonesian higher education. In particular, this study aims to provide basic principles for future ERT implementation. Seven universities in Indonesia were involved in the first phase of the study, aiming to obtain initial information regarding the relevance, content validity, and readability of fundamental initial principles of ERT. The second phase aims to assess the quality ERT scale quality using confirmatory composite analysis (CCA) procedure, involving 2,957 undergraduate students from 22 universities in ten provinces in Indonesia. The results seem to indicate that the ERT principles can be viewed as 1) a complementary tool for ERT design covering five principles including simplicity, accessibility, affordability, flexibility, and empathy; and 2) In Indonesian higher education, affordability and flexibility are the two principles that are rated the lowest based on students' experiences. The lack of access to a fast, affordable, and reliable Internet connection in some areas of Indonesia is a fundamental problem in implementing ERT. This result is likely to be the case in other developing countries with similar geographical characteristics. The findings provide information based on practical experience - showing that learning design in a crisis is dynamic and open to revision based on socio-economic considerations, technological infrastructure, and students 'and teachers' readiness.

Project description:This study examined the level of collaboration between senior and junior academic staff in Higher Education Institutions in the Amhara Regional State, Ethiopia. We employed a convergent parallel mixed research design and collected data from 203 teachers, four department heads, and four academic deans using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The researchers also employed frequencies, percentages, mean, standard deviations, independent sample t-test, and one-way analysis on variance to analyze and interpret the quantitative data. The qualitative data on the other hand, was analyzed thematically using reflexive thematic analysis. The results show that the collaboration between senior and junior faculty members is too weak and limited to information exchange and material-sharing practices. The study also shows that independent variables such as gender and level of qualification did not affect senior and junior staff collaboration, while age and teaching experience affected it. We recommend the concerned bodies in higher education institutions to establish a system that entertains a genuine collaborative culture between senior and junior academic staff, following an integrative approach among different groups and considering all the challenges in realizing such an effective collaboration. Project description:This study investigates factors influencing student engagement in Ethiopian higher education, focusing on self-efficacy, teacher support, and technology support at Mattu University. A cross-sectional survey design was employed; involving 620 undergraduate students selected using stratified sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to assess the impact of these variables on student engagement. The findings reveal that teacher support, technology support, and self-efficacy collectively explain 69% of the variance in student engagement, with teacher support identified as the strongest predictor. The results highlight the importance of supportive teacher-student relationships, accessible digital resources, and students' confidence in their academic abilities for fostering engagement. The study underscores the need for improved teacher preparation, diverse instructional strategies, and enhanced access to digital resources. These findings offer practical recommendations for policymakers and educational institutions in Ethiopia to create more engaging learning environments, ultimately enhancing academic success and retention in higher education.

Project description:Due to the Covid-19 pandemic that spread globally in 2020, higher education courses were subsequently offered in fully remote, online formats. A plethora of primary studies began investigating a range of topics exploring teaching and learning in higher education, particularly during the initial semester. In order to provide an overview and initial understanding of this emerging research field, a systematic mapping review was conducted that collates and describes the characteristics of 282 primary empirical studies. Findings reveal that research was carried out mostly descriptively and cross-sectionally, focusing predominantly on undergraduate students and their perceptions of teaching and learning during the pandemic. Studies originate from a broad range of countries, are overwhelmingly published open access, and largely focused on the fields of Health & Welfare and Natural Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics. Educational technology used for emergency remote teaching are most often synchronous collaborative tools, used in combination with text-based tools. The findings are discussed against pre-pandemic research on educational technology use in higher education teaching and learning, and perspectives for further research are provided.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1186/s41239-021-00282-x.

Project description:A growing body of literature highlights the increasing demand on college graduates to possess the problem finding, problem framing, and problem-solving skills necessary to address complex real-world challenges. Design thinking (DT) is an iterative, human-centered approach to problem solving that synthesizes what is desirable, equitable, technologically feasible, and sustainable. As universities expand efforts to train students with DT mindsets and skills, we must assess faculty and student DT practices and outcomes to better understand DT course experiences. Understanding how DT is taught and experienced within higher education can help schools promote student learning and align their training programs with professional, personal, and civic needs. In this study, surveys were completed by 19 faculty and 196 students from 23 courses at four universities. DT teaching and learning was characterized by three DT practices and five outcomes. Statistically significant differences were found by discipline of study and student type (i.e., graduate vs undergraduate), but not by gender or race/ethnicity. These results can be used to inform the development of classroom-based DT teaching and learning strategies across higher education institutions and disciplines.

Project description:Background: Online learning or E-learning are approaches to broadcasting teaching by the means of internet technology and software applications. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is likewise embarking on the rapid growth in online education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the student's perceptions regarding online teaching and learning during COVID 19. Methods: An online computer-based cross-sectional study was conducted between May and June 2020. A pre-validated questionnaire was used and administrated to health sciences students studying at Dammam Universities through online software QuestionPro. Results: Out of total 281, 68% of the participants were females (n=188) while 31.9% (n=88) were male students with an average age of 23.1(4.5) years. Overall, 176 (62%) of the students expressed their satisfaction with online learning. Conclusion: Findings will help academicians to identify strengths, areas of improvement, and encourage faculty to think deeply to restructure course learning objectives, teaching techniques to engage students and improve learning process.
