Elucidating the Dehydration Pathways of K₂CO₃·1.5H₂O.

ABSTRACT: Potassium carbonate sesquihydrate has previously been identified as a promising material for thermochemical energy storage. The hydration and cyclic behavior have been extensively studied in the literature, but detailed investigation into the different processes occurring during dehydration is lacking. In this work, a systematic investigation into the different dehydration steps is conducted. It is found that at higher temperatures, dehydration of pristine material occurs as a single process since water removal from the pristine crystals is difficult. After a single cycle, due to morphological changes, dehydration now occurs as two processes, starting at lower temperatures. The morphological changes open new pathways for water removal at the newly generated edges, corners, and steps of the crystal surface. The observations from this work may contribute to material design as they elucidate the relation between material structure and behavior.

Elucidating protonation pathways in CO2 photoreduction using the kinetic isotope effect.

Project description:The surge in anthropogenic CO2 emissions from fossil fuel dependence demands innovative solutions, such as artificial photosynthesis, to convert CO2 into value-added products. Unraveling the CO2 photoreduction mechanism at the molecular level is vital for developing high-performance photocatalysts. Here we show kinetic isotope effect evidence for the contested protonation pathway for CO2 photoreduction on TiO2 nanoparticles, which challenges the long-held assumption of electron-initiated activation. Employing isotopically labeled H2O/D2O and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, we observe H+/D+-protonated intermediates on TiO2 nanoparticles and capture their inverse decay kinetic isotope effect. Our findings significantly broaden our understanding of the CO2 uptake mechanism in semiconductor photocatalysts.

Elucidating CO2 Chemisorption in Diamine-Appended Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:The widespread deployment of carbon capture and sequestration as a climate change mitigation strategy could be facilitated by the development of more energy-efficient adsorbents. Diamine-appended metal-organic frameworks of the type diamine-M2(dobpdc) (M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn; dobpdc4- = 4,4'-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3'-dicarboxylate) have shown promise for carbon-capture applications, although questions remain regarding the molecular mechanisms of CO2 uptake in these materials. Here we leverage the crystallinity and tunability of this class of frameworks to perform a comprehensive study of CO2 chemisorption. Using multinuclear nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy experiments and van-der-Waals-corrected density functional theory (DFT) calculations for 13 diamine-M2(dobpdc) variants, we demonstrate that the canonical CO2 chemisorption products, ammonium carbamate chains and carbamic acid pairs, can be readily distinguished and that ammonium carbamate chain formation dominates for diamine-Mg2(dobpdc) materials. In addition, we elucidate a new chemisorption mechanism in the material dmpn-Mg2(dobpdc) (dmpn = 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-diaminopropane), which involves the formation of a 1:1 mixture of ammonium carbamate and carbamic acid and accounts for the unusual adsorption properties of this material. Finally, we show that the presence of water plays an important role in directing the mechanisms for CO2 uptake in diamine-M2(dobpdc) materials. Overall, our combined NMR and DFT approach enables a thorough depiction and understanding of CO2 adsorption within diamine-M2(dobpdc) compounds, which may aid similar studies in other amine-functionalized adsorbents in the future.

Dehydration Pathways of Gypsum and the Rehydration Mechanism of Soluble Anhydrite γ-CaSO4.

Project description:The dehydration products of gypsum under different temperature and water vapor pressure were investigated by thermodynamic theory. Additionally, the rehydration mechanism of soluble anhydrite was also studied by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The thermodynamic calculation results reveal that the dehydration mechanism of gypsum significantly depended on ambient temperature and water vapor pressure. In the high-temperature and low water vapor pressure region, gypsum dehydrates to form γ-CaSO4 in a single-step process (CaSO4·2H2O → γ-CaSO4); with increasing water vapor pressure, gypsum undergoes the CaSO4·2H2O → γ-CaSO4 → β-CaSO4·0.5H2O reaction path and as water vapor pressure increases further, the occurrence of a two-step conversion path CaSO4·2H2O → β-CaSO4·0.5H2O → γ-CaSO4 was observed. It was also found that gypsum is stable in the low-temperature and high water vapor pressure region and does not dehydrate to form any calcium sulfate hemihydrate. Finally, the rehydration mechanism of soluble anhydrite was studied by MC simulations. The simulation results are in agreement with the experimental data and support the finding that γ-CaSO4 rehydration forms CaSO4·0.67H2O in high relative humidity. Another important result revealed by the MC simulation is that γ-CaSO4 has an extraordinary ability to capture water molecules from an extremely dry atmosphere, which is very useful in some fields, such as in drying processes and even for extracting liquid water from extremely dry atmosphere.

Elucidating the Roles of Nafion/Solvent Formulations in Copper-Catalyzed CO2 Electrolysis.

Project description:Nafion ionomer, composed of hydrophobic perfluorocarbon backbones and hydrophilic sulfonic acid side chains, is the most widely used additive for preparing catalyst layers (CLs) for electrochemical CO2 reduction, but its impact on the performance of CO2 electrolysis remains poorly understood. Here, we systematically investigate the role of the catalyst ink formulation on CO2 electrolysis using commercial CuO nanoparticles as the model pre-catalyst. We find that the presence of Nafion is essential for achieving stable product distributions due to its ability to stabilize the catalyst morphology under reaction conditions. Moreover, the Nafion content and solvent composition (water/alcohol fraction) regulate the internal structure of Nafion coatings, as well as the catalyst morphology, thereby significantly impacting CO2 electrolysis performance, resulting in variations of C2+ product Faradaic efficiency (FE) by >3×, with C2+ FE ranging from 17 to 54% on carbon paper substrates. Using a combination of ellipsometry and in situ Raman spectroscopy during CO2 reduction, we find that such selectivity differences stem from changes to the local reaction microenvironment. In particular, the combination of high water/alcohol ratios and low Nafion fractions in the catalyst ink results in stable and favorable microenvironments, increasing the local CO2/H2O concentration ratio and promoting high CO surface coverage to facilitate C2+ production in long-term CO2 electrolysis. Therefore, this work provides insights into the critical role of Nafion binders and underlines the importance of optimizing Nafion/solvent formulations as a means of enhancing the performance of electrochemical CO2 reduction systems.

Pathways for balancing CO2 emissions and sinks.

Project description:In December 2015 in Paris, leaders committed to achieve global, net decarbonization of human activities before 2100. This achievement would halt and even reverse anthropogenic climate change through the net removal of carbon from the atmosphere. However, the Paris documents contain few specific prescriptions for emissions mitigation, leaving various countries to pursue their own agendas. In this analysis, we project energy and land-use emissions mitigation pathways through 2100, subject to best-available parameterization of carbon-climate feedbacks and interdependencies. We find that, barring unforeseen and transformative technological advancement, anthropogenic emissions need to peak within the next 10 years, to maintain realistic pathways to meeting the COP21 emissions and warming targets. Fossil fuel consumption will probably need to be reduced below a quarter of primary energy supply by 2100 and the allowable consumption rate drops even further if negative emissions technologies remain technologically or economically unfeasible at the global scale.

Elucidating CO2 Hydrogenation over In2 O3 Nanoparticles using Operando UV/Vis and Impedance Spectroscopies.

Project description:In2 O3 has emerged as a promising catalyst for CO2 activation, but a fundamental understanding of its mode of operation in CO2 hydrogenation is still missing, as the application of operando vibrational spectroscopy is challenging due to absorption effects. In this mechanistic study, we systematically address the redox processes related to the reverse water-gas shift reaction (rWGSR) over In2 O3 nanoparticles, both at the surface and in the bulk. Based on temperature-dependent operando UV/Vis spectra and a novel operando impedance approach for thermal powder catalysts, we propose oxidation by CO2 as the rate-determining step for the rWGSR. The results are consistent with redox processes, whereby hydrogen-containing surface species are shown to exhibit a promoting effect. Our findings demonstrate that oxygen/hydrogen dynamics, in addition to surface processes, are important for the activity, which is expected to be of relevance not only for In2 O3 but also for other reducible oxide catalysts.

Elucidating the active phases of CoOx films on Au(111) in the CO oxidation reaction.

Project description:Noble metals supported on reducible oxides, like CoOx and TiOx, exhibit superior activity in many chemical reactions, but the origin of the increased activity is not well understood. To answer this question we studied thin films of CoOx supported on an Au(111) single crystal surface as a model for the CO oxidation reaction. We show that three reaction regimes exist in response to chemical and topographic restructuring of the CoOx catalyst as a function of reactant gas phase CO/O2 stoichiometry and temperature. Under oxygen-lean conditions and moderate temperatures (≤150 °C), partially oxidized films (CoOx<1) containing Co0 were found to be efficient catalysts. In contrast, stoichiometric CoO films containing only Co2+ form carbonates in the presence of CO that poison the reaction below 300 °C. Under oxygen-rich conditions a more oxidized catalyst phase (CoOx>1) forms containing Co3+ species that are effective in a wide temperature range. Resonant photoemission spectroscopy (ResPES) revealed the unique role of Co3+ sites in catalyzing the CO oxidation. Density function theory (DFT) calculations provided deeper insights into the pathway and free energy barriers for the reactions on these oxide phases. These findings in this work highlight the versatility of catalysts and their evolution to form different active phases, both topological and chemically, in response to reaction conditions exposing a new paradigm in the catalyst structure during operation.

Revealing CO2 dissociation pathways at vicinal copper (997) interfaces.

Project description:Size- and shape-tailored copper (Cu) nanocrystals can offer vicinal planes for facile carbon dioxide (CO2) activation. Despite extensive reactivity benchmarks, a correlation between CO2 conversion and morphology structure has not yet been established at vicinal Cu interfaces. Herein, ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy reveals step-broken Cu nanocluster evolutions on the Cu(997) surface under 1 mbar CO2(g). The CO2 dissociation reaction produces carbon monoxide (CO) adsorbate and atomic oxygen (O) at Cu step-edges, inducing complicated restructuring of the Cu atoms to compensate for increased surface chemical potential energy at ambient pressure. The CO molecules bound at under-coordinated Cu atoms contribute to the reversible Cu clustering with the pressure gap effect, whereas the dissociated oxygen leads to irreversible Cu faceting geometries. Synchrotron-based ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identifies the chemical binding energy changes in CO-Cu complexes, which proves the characterized real-space evidence for the step-broken Cu nanoclusters under CO(g) environments. Our in situ surface observations provide a more realistic insight into Cu nanocatalyst designs for efficient CO2 conversion to renewable energy sources during C1 chemical reactions.

Exploration of CO2 emission reduction pathways: identification of influencing factors of CO2 emission and CO2 emission reduction potential of power industry.

Project description:Low-carbon development of China's power sector is the key to achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Based on the logarithmic mean divisor index (LMDI) model, considering the carbon transfer caused by inter-provincial electricity trading, this paper analyzes the influencing factors of CO2 emissions in the provincial power sector and uses K-means clustering method to divide 30 provinces into four categories to analyze the differences in regional carbon emission characteristics. In addition, by establishing different development scenarios, the carbon emission trends and emission reduction potentials of each cluster under different emission reduction measures from 2020 to 2040 are studied, in order to explore the differentiated emission reduction paths of each cluster. The results show that the contribution of influencing factors shows great differences in different provinces. Trends in CO2 emissions vary widely across scenarios. In the reference scenario, the CO2 emissions of each cluster will continue to increase; in the existing policy scenario, the total power industry will peak at 6.1Gt in 2030; in the advance peak scenario that puts more emphasis on the development of advanced technologies and renewable energy under the clean development model, the carbon emission peak will be brought forward to 2025, and the peak will be reduced to 5.2Gt. Finally, differentiated emission reduction paths and measures are proposed for the future low-carbon development of different cluster power industries, providing theoretical reference for the deployment of provincial-level emission reduction work, which is of great significance to the global green and low-carbon transformation.Graphical abstractSupplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10098-022-02456-1.

Elucidating the Role of the Metal Catalyst and Oxide Support in the Ru/CeO2-Catalyzed CO2 Methanation Mechanism.

Project description:This study addresses the yet unresolved CO2 methanation mechanism on a Ru/CeO2 catalyst by means of near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) complemented with periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations. NAP-XPS results show that the switch from H2 to CO2 + H2 mixture oxidizes both the Ru and CeO2 phases at low temperatures, which is explained by the CO2 adsorption modes assessed by means of DFT on each representative surface. CO2 adsorption on Ru is dissociative and moderately endergonic, leading to polybonded Ru-carbonyl groups whose hydrogenation is the rate-determining step in the overall process. Unlike on Ru metal, CO2 can be strongly adsorbed as carbonates on ceria surface oxygen sites or on the reduced ceria at oxygen vacancies as carboxylates (CO2 -δ), resulting in the reoxidation of ceria. Carboxylates can then evolve as CO, which is released either via direct splitting at relatively low temperatures or through stable formate species at higher temperatures. DRIFTS confirm the great stability of formates, whose depletion relates with CO2 conversion in the reaction cell, while carbonates remain on the surface up to higher temperatures. CO generation on ceria serves as an additional reservoir of Ru-carbonyls, cooperating to the overall CO2 methanation process. Altogether, this study highlights the noninnocent role of the ceria support in the performance of Ru/CeO2 toward CO2 methanation.
