Out of 189 studies identified, 29 met the eligibility criteria, and only 3 were suitable for inclusion in this review.Conclusion
Studies using educommunication for food and nutrition education are scarce. Despite the limited number of studies included in this review, various educommunication strategies utilizing communication and information technologies were used. Educommunication strategies can facilitate knowledge acquisition in food and nutrition and change behaviors, resulting in health benefits for the participants. More studies on this subject are needed.

Project description:IntroductionNeurodegenerative diseases affect the nervous system and are characterised by the deterioration and/or death of neurons. Nutrition care is essential for maintaining an adequate nutritional status, which influences the prognosis and survival of patients with neurological diseases. Caregivers participate assiduously in the care of these patients and must be integrated into the multidisciplinary team. They often need specific training or knowledge regarding food and nutrition to perform their roles with patients. Health educommunication is a learning tool that can positively influence the appropriation of the theme and the construction of care autonomy. This scoping review (ScR) will map educommunication actions/strategies in nutrition and neurodegenerative diseases.Methods and analysisThis ScR will be designed based on the methodology of Arksey and O'Malley and will follow the methodological guidance for conducting a Joanna Briggs Institute ScR. The research question addressed by the scoping review will be: what actions/strategies for educommunication in nutrition and neurodegenerative diseases have been developed for patients or caregivers? Many search sites it will be used in this review, such as electronic databases (Embase, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science), Google Scholar and grey literature sources. No restrictions of date or language will be applied to the search strategy. Two reviewers will independently screen all abstracts and full-text studies for inclusion. Data, including the study design, objective, study population, neurodegenerative diseases, nutrition topics and educommunication strategies will be logically organised and tabulated in Microsoft Excel.Ethics and disseminationThe data used for this review are from secondary sources and available to the public; thus, no ethical approval and human consent will be required for this study. Dissemination of the results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and presented at conferences.

Project description:AimsEpigenetics has significantly evolved and emerged as important players in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. However, a scientometric synthesis of such changes over time is currently lacking.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection from inception until November 5, 2022, using appropriate keywords. Our primary objective was to employ scientometric analysis to depict changes in keywords over time and to assess the structure and credibility of clusters. Additionally, we examined the network of research (countries, institutions, and authors) using CiteSpace and VOSviewer.ResultsWe identified 25 clusters with well-structured networks (Q = 0.82) and highly credible clustering (S = 0.91) from 16,181 articles published between 1999 and 2022. Our findings are as follows: (a) the literature and research interest concerning the epigenetics of neurodegenerative diseases are continuously growing; (b) the three most productive countries are the USA, China, and Germany; (c) international collaborative relationships exist, alongside small, isolated collaboration networks of individual institutions.ConclusionThe number and impact of global publications on the epigenetics of neurodegenerative diseases have expanded rapidly over the past 20 years. This review provides valuable guidelines for researchers interested in neurodegenerative diseases research.

Project description:The nutrition recommendation for most common neurological diseases is to follow national dietary guidelines. This is to mitigate malnutrition, reduce the risk of diet-related diseases, and to help manage some common symptoms, including constipation. Nutrition education programs can support people in adhering to guidelines; hence the aim of this scoping review was to explore what programs have been implemented for adults with neurological diseases. We conducted this review according to a published a priori protocol. From 2555 articles screened, 13 were included (dementia n = 6; multiple sclerosis n = 4; stroke survivors n = 2; Parkinson's n = 1). There were no programs for epilepsy, Huntington's, and motor neurone disease. Program duration and number of sessions varied widely; however, weekly delivery was most common. Just over half were delivered by dietitians. Most did not report using a behavior change theory. Commonly used behavior change techniques were instruction on how to perform a behavior, credible source, and behavioral practice/rehearsal. Evidence of nutrition education programs for adults with neurological diseases is lacking. Of those that are published, many do not meet best practice principles for nutrition education regarding delivery, educator characteristics, and evaluation. More programs aligning with best practice principles are needed to assess characteristics that lead to behavior change.

Project description:This scoping review aimed to summarise the effects of the ketone body β-hydroxybutyrate. The review details the revealed pathways and functional properties following its intervention in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, 5 research publications that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were shortlisted. Following the intervention, we discovered a tendency of reduced inflammatory status in microglia, as evidenced by lower levels of pro-inflammatory mediators produced, reduced microgliosis in afflicted tissues, and enhanced cognitive functions in neurodegenerative models. We found that there is a significant overlap in the mechanism of action of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) via activation of the G-protein-Coupled Receptor 109A (GPR109a) receptor and deactivation of the inflammasome complex. Furthermore, although comparing outcomes can be challenging due to the heterogeneity in the study model, the results we have assembled here were consistent, giving us confidence in the intervention's efficacy. We also discussed new studies where BHB is involved in various roles in regulating inflammation in microglia, allowing for fresh therapeutic targets against neurodegeneration. This brief review provides evidence to support the huge potential of BHB in the treatment of neurodegenerative illnesses.

Project description:Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease with underlying genetic, inflammatory and immunological background, which is a great medical problem, currently regarded as a systemic condition. Neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) are characterized by a progressive loss of nervous tissue, which affects elderly people more frequently; therefore, it is suspected that, due to society's aging, morbidity is going to increase. We performed a thorough review in order to investigate for the first time whether psoriasis may predispose to different particular neurodegenerative diseases-Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). PubMed search resulted in the retrieval of 833 records, of which 77 eligible were included in the review. Our thorough analysis revealed there are some potential links between psoriasis and NDs (inflammation, oxidative stress, genetics, cardiometabolic disorders), but there is no strong evidence that psoriasis may predispose to NDs. Based on the evidence, it seems that the risk of PD in psoriatics is not increased, and the evidence for increased risk of AD slightly prevails the data that state the opposite. ALS risk does not seem to be increased in psoriatics. The paucity of original studies does not allow for the formulation of definitive conclusions but encourages to perform further investigations.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Nursing home residents with early-onset neurodegenerative diseases are often younger in comparison with other residents, and need different, often more complex care. Accordingly, the measurements currently used for measuring quality of care in nursing homes may not be suitable for use in this target group. Little is known about the experiences of these residents and of their (in) formal caregivers regarding the quality of care they receive. Therefore, the aim of this scoping review is to explore which instruments are available for measuring the quality of care for nursing home residents with early-onset neurodegenerative diseases (excluding dementia), from the perspective of the resident and of (in) formal caregivers. METHODS:A literature search was performed in the databases Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science and Cinahl. The search strategy consisted of four main concepts: neurodegenerative diseases, quality of care, nursing homes and perspectives of residents, (in) formal caregivers. Studies were included if they used instruments and/or strategies to measure quality of care, focused on nursing home residents with early-onset neurodegenerative diseases and the perspective of either the resident or (in) formal caregiver. RESULTS:From a total of 809 identified articles, 87 full text articles were screened for eligibility. Five studies were included, only one of which described an instrument. The other four used topic lists and/or themes to measure quality of care. In total, 60 items related to quality of care could be derived. From these 60 items, eight overarching domains were found, with a subdivision into items derived, respectively, from the residents', informal and formal caregivers' perspective: 'emotional support', 'physical support', 'social support', 'care', 'care content', 'expertise', 'communication' and 'organization of care'. CONCLUSIONS:Currently, there are no methods for assessing the quality of care specifically focused on nursing home residents with early-onset neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, the items retrieved in this review give an overview of important topics for measuring the quality of care for this target group, from the perspective of the resident, and of the informal and formal caregivers. These items might be used to develop a tailored instrument for assessing the quality of care for nursing home residents with early-onset neurodegenerative diseases.

Project description:PurposeNeurodegenerative motor diseases (NMDs) have devastating effects on the lives of patients and their loved ones, in part due to the impact of neurologic abnormalities on speech, which significantly limits functional communication. Clinical speech researchers have thus spent decades investigating speech features in populations suffering from NMDs. Features of impaired articulatory function are of particular interest given their detrimental impact on intelligibility, their ability to encode a variety of distinct movement disorders, and their potential as diagnostic indicators of neurodegenerative diseases. The objectives of this scoping review were to identify (1) which components of articulation (i.e. coordination, consistency, speed, precision, and repetition rate) are the most represented in the acoustic literature on NMDs; (2) which acoustic articulatory features demonstrate the most potential for detecting speech motor dysfunction in NMDs; and (3) which articulatory components are the most impaired within each NMD.MethodThis review examined literature published between 1976 and 2020. Studies were identified from six electronic databases using predefined key search terms. The first research objective was addressed using a frequency count of studies investigating each articulatory component, while the second and third objectives were addressed using meta-analyses.ResultFindings from 126 studies revealed a considerable emphasis on articulatory precision. Of the 24 features included in the meta-analyses, vowel dispersion/distance and stop gap duration exhibited the largest effects when comparing the NMD population to controls. The meta-analyses also revealed divergent patterns of articulatory performance across disease types, providing evidence of unique profiles of articulatory impairment.ConclusionThis review illustrates the current state of the literature on acoustic articulatory features in NMDs. By highlighting the areas of need within each articulatory component and disease group, this work provides a foundation on which clinical researchers, speech scientists, neurologists, and computer science engineers can develop research questions that will both broaden and deepen the understanding of articulatory impairments in NMDs.

Project description:Cytoplasmic ribonucleoproteins called stress granules (SGs) are considered as one of the main cellular solutions against stress. Their temporary presence ends with stress relief. Any factor such as chronic stress or mutations in the structure of the components of SGs that lead to their permanent presence can affect their interactions with pathological aggregations and increase the degenerative effects. SGs involved in RNA mechanisms are important factors in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), frontotemporal degeneration (FTD), and Alzheimer's diseases (AD). Although many studies have been performed in the field of SGs and neurodegenerative disorders, so far, no systematic studies have been executed in this field. The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive perspective of all studies about the role of SGs in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders with a focus on the protein ingredients of these granules. This scoping review is based on a six-stage methodology structure and the PRISMA guideline. A systematic search of seven databases for qualified articles was conducted until December 2020. Publications were screened independently by two reviewers and quantitative and qualitative analysis was performed on the extracted data. Bioinformatics analysis was used to plot the network and predict interprotein interactions. In addition, GO analysis was performed. A total of 48 articles were identified that comply the inclusion criteria. Most studies on neurodegenerative diseases have been conducted on ALS, AD, and FTD using human post mortem tissues. Human derived cell line studies have been used only in ALS. A total 29 genes of protein components of SGs have been studied, the most important of which are TDP-43, TIA-1, PABP-1. Bioinformatics studies have predicted 15 proteins to interact with the protein components of SGs, which may be the constituents of SGs. Understanding the interactions between SGs and pathological aggregations in neurodegenerative diseases can provide new targets for treatment of these disorders.

Project description:Advance care planning (ACP) is increasingly acknowledged as a key step to enable patients to define their goals/preferences for future medical care, together with their carers and health professionals. We aimed to map the evidence on ACP in neurodegenerative disorders. We conducted a scoping review by searching PubMed (inception-December 28, 2020) in addition to trial, review, and dissertation registers. From 9367 records, we included 53 studies, mostly conducted in Europe (45%) and US-Canada (41%), within the last five years. Twenty-six percent of studies were qualitative, followed by observational (21%), reviews (19%), randomized controlled trials (RCTs, 19%), quasi-experimental (11%), and mixed-methods (4%). Two-thirds of studies addressed dementia, followed by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (13%), and brain tumors (9%). The RCT interventions (all in dementia) consisted of educational programs, facilitated discussions, or videos for patients and/or carers. In conclusion, more research is needed to investigate barriers and facilitators of ACP uptake, as well as to develop/test interventions in almost all the neurodegenerative disorders. A common set of outcome measures targeting each discrete ACP behavior, and validated across the different diseases and cultures is also needed.

Project description:Neurodegenerative diseases of the central nervous system are characterised by pathogenetic cellular and molecular changes in specific areas of the brain that lead to the dysfunction and/or loss of explicit neuronal populations. Despite exhibiting different clinical profiles and selective neuronal loss, common features such as abnormal protein deposition, dysfunctional cellular transport, mitochondrial deficits, glutamate excitotoxicity and inflammation are observed in most, if not all, neurodegenerative disorders, suggesting converging pathways of neurodegeneration. We have generated comparative genome-wide gene expression data for Alzheimer’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and schizophrenia using an extensive cohort of well characterised post-mortem CNS tissues. The analysis of whole genome expression patterns across these major disorders offers an outstanding opportunity not only to look into exclusive disease specific changes, but more importantly to uncover potential common molecular pathogenic mechanisms that could be targeted for therapeutic gain. Surprisingly, no dysregulated gene that passed our selection criteria was found in common across all 6 diseases using our primary method of analysis. However, 61 dysregulated genes were shared when comparing five and four diseases. Our analysis indicates firstly the involvement of common neuronal homeostatic, survival and synaptic plasticity pathways. Secondly, we report changes to immunoregulatory and immunomodulatory pathways in all diseases. Our secondary method of analysis confirmed significant up-regulation of a number of genes in diseases presenting degeneration and showed that somatostatin was downregulated in all 6 diseases. The latter is supportive of a general role for neuroinflammation in the pathogenesis and/or response to neurodegeneration. Unravelling the detailed nature of the molecular changes regulating inflammation in the CNS is key to the development of novel therapeutic approaches for these chronic conditions. A total of 113 cases were selected retrospectively on the basis of a confirmed clinical and neuropathological diagnosis and snap-frozen brain blocks were provided by various tissue banks within the BrainNet Europe network. Total RNA was extracted from dissected snap-frozen tissue (< 100 mg) by the individual laboratories according to a BNE optimised common protocol using the RNeasy(r) tissue lipid mini kit (Qiagen Ltd, Crawley, UK) according to the manufacturer's instructions, and was stored at -80C until further use. Gene expression analysis was performed on the RNA samples using the Illumina whole genome HumanRef8 v2 BeadChip (Illumina, London, UK). All the labelling and hybridisation of the samples was carried out in a single experiment by the Imperial College group to reduce the technical variability. RNA samples were prepared for array analysis using the Illumina TotalPrep(tm)-96 RNA Amplification Kit (Ambion/Applied Biosystems, Warrington, UK). Finally, the BeadChips we re scanned using the Illumina BeadArray Reader. The data was extracted using BeadStudio 3.2 (Illumina). Data normalisation and gene differential expression analyses were conducted using the Rosetta error models available in the Rosetta Resolver(r) system (Rosetta Biosoftware, Seattle, Wa, USA). Two samples presented very low signal expression most likely due to hybridization problems and did not pass the quality control test. They are not represented here. One of the 2 samples was a replicate, therefore there was loss of only 1 case bringing the grand total of cases used to 112 (total of samples of 118 including 6 replicates).
