ABSTRACT: The molecular mechanisms controlling the differentiation of stem cells into specialized cells and tissues are enormously complex. Deciphering the mechanisms behind this precisely regulated process is essential not only for understanding ontogenesis but also for interpretations of evolutionary dynamics.
