Cryptochromes (CRYs) entrain the circadian clocks of plants and animals to light. Irradiation of the <i>Drosophila</i> cryptochrome (dCRY) causes reduction of an oxidized flavin cofactor by a chain of conserved tryptophan (Trp) residues.
