Self-supported hydrogenolysis of aromatic ethers to arenes.

ABSTRACT: Arenes are widely used chemicals and essential components in liquid fuels, which are currently produced from fossil feedstocks. Here, we proposed the self-supported hydrogenolysis (SSH) of aromatic ethers to produce arenes using the hydrogen source within the reactants, and it was found that RuW alloy nanoparticles were very efficient catalyst for the reactions. This route is very attractive and distinguished from the reported studies on the cleavage of the C_Ar─O bonds. The unique feature of this methodology is that exogenous hydrogen or other reductant is not required, and hydrogenation of aromatic rings could be avoided completely. The selectivities to arenes could reach >99.9% at complete conversion of the ethers. Moreover, lignin could also be transformed into arenes efficiently over the RuW alloy catalyst. The mechanism studies showed that the neighboring Ru and W species in the RuW alloy nanoparticles worked synergistically to accelerate the SSH reaction.

Hydrogenolysis of Furfuryl Alcohol to 1,2-Pentanediol Over Supported Ruthenium Catalysts.

Project description:Hydrogenolysis of the furan rings of furfural and furfuryl alcohol, which can be obtained from biomass, has attracted attention as a method for obtaining valuable chemicals such as 1,2-pentanediol. In this study, we examined the hydrogenolysis of furfuryl alcohol to 1,2-pentanediol over Pd/C, Pt/C, Rh/C, and various supported Ru catalysts in several solvents. In particular, we investigated the effects of combinations of solvents and supports on the reaction outcome. Of all the tested combinations, Ru/MgO in water gave the best selectivity for 1,2-pentanediol: with this catalyst, 42 % selectivity for 1,2-pentanediol was achieved upon hydrogenolysis of furfuryl alcohol for 1 h at 463 K. In contrast, reaction in water in the presence of Ru/Al2 O3 afforded cyclopentanone and cyclopentanol by means of hydrogenation and rearrangement reactions.

Mechanochemical Conversion of Aromatic Amines to Aryl Trifluoromethyl Ethers.

Project description:Increased interest in the trifluoromethoxy group in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry has induced a demand for new, selective, general, and faster methods applicable to natural products and highly functionalized compounds at a later stage of hit-to-lead campaigns. Applying pyrylium tetrafluoroborate, we have developed a mechanochemical protocol to selectively substitute the aromatic amino group with the OCF3 functionality. The scope of our method includes 31 examples of ring-substituted anilines, including amides and sulfonamides. Expected SNAr products were obtained in excellent yields. The presented concise method opens a pathway to new chemical spaces for the pharmaceutical industry.

Nickel-mediated hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds of aryl ethers: what is the source of the hydrogen?

Project description:Mechanistic studies of the hydrogenolysis of aryl ethers by nickel were undertaken with (diphosphine)aryl methyl ethers. A Ni(0) complex containing Ni-arene interactions adjacent to the aryl-O bond was isolated. Heating led to aryl-O bond activation and generation of a nickel aryl methoxide complex. Formal β-H elimination from this species produced a nickel aryl hydride which can undergo reductive elimination in the presence of formaldehyde to generate a carbon monoxide adduct of Ni(0). The reported complexes map out a plausible mechanism of aryl ether hydrogenolysis catalyzed by nickel. Investigations of a previously reported catalytic system using isotopically labeled substrates are consistent with the mechanism proposed in the stoichiometric system, involving β-H elimination from a nickel alkoxide rather than cleavage of the Ni-O bond by H(2).

Mechanistic Investigations of the Hydrogenolysis of Diaryl Ethers Catalyzed by Nickel Complexes of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands.

Project description:Recent interest in the valorization of lignin has led to reactions involving the cleavage of strong aromatic C-O bonds. However, few experimental mechanistic studies of these reactions have been published. We report detailed mechanistic analysis of the hydrogenolysis of diaryl ethers catalyzed by the combination of Ni(COD)2 (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) and an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC). Experiments on the catalytic reaction indicated that NaOt-Bu was necessary for catalysis, but kinetic analysis showed that the base is not involved in the rate-limiting C-O bond cleavage. The resting state of the catalyst is an NHC-Ni(η6-arene) complex. Substitution of the coordinated solvent with diaryl ether allowed isolation of a diaryl ether-bound Ni complex. Rate-limiting C-O bond cleavage occurs to generate a three-coordinate product of oxidative addition, a metallacyclic version of which has been prepared independently. Stoichiometric studies show that arene and phenol products are released following reaction with H2. NaOt-Bu was found to deprotonate the phenol product and to prevent formation of inactive NiI dimers.

Mechanocatalytic Hydrogenolysis of the Lignin Model Dimer Benzyl Phenyl Ether over Supported Palladium Catalysts.

Project description:This work demonstrates the mechanocatalytic hydrogenolysis of the ether bond in the lignin model compound benzyl phenyl ether (BPE) and hardwood lignin isolated by hydrolysis with supercritical water. Pd catalysts with 4 wt % loading on Al2O3 and SiO2 supports achieve 100% conversion of BPE with a toluene production rate of (2.6-2.9) × 10-5 mol·min-1. The formation of palladium hydrides under H2 gas flow contributes to an increase in the turnover frequency by a factor of up to 300 compared to Ni on silica-alumina. While a near-quantitative toluene yield is obtained, some of the phenolic products remain adsorbed on the catalyst.

Controlling the selectivity of the hydrogenolysis of polyamides catalysed by ceria-supported metal nanoparticles.

Project description:Catalytic hydrogenolysis is a promising approach to transform waste plastic into valuable chemicals. However, the transformation of N-containing polymers, such as polyamides (i.e. nylon), remains under-investigated, particularly by heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we demonstrate the hydrogenolysis of various polyamides catalysed by platinum-group metal nanoparticles supported on CeO2. Ru/CeO2 and Pt/CeO2 are both highly active but display different selectivity; Ru/CeO2 is selective for the conversion of all polyamides into water, ammonia, and methane, whereas Pt/CeO2 yields hydrocarbons retaining the carbon backbone of the parent polyamide. Density functional theory computations illustrate that Pt nanoparticles require higher activation energy for carbon-carbon bond cleavage than Ru nanoparticles, rationalising the observed selectivity. The high activity and product selectivity of both catalysts was maintained when converting real-world polyamide products, such as fishing net. This study provides a mechanistic basis for heterogeneously catalysed polyamide hydrogenolysis, and a new approach to the valorisation of polyamide containing waste.

Effect of support acidity during selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol over supported palladium-ruthenium catalysts.

Project description:We report the role of the acidity of support during the selectivity hydrogenolysis of glycerol over supported bimetallic palladium-ruthenium (PdRu) catalysts. The PdRu nanoparticles were supported on a series of metal oxides and zeolitic supports via the modified impregnation method and tested for the liquid-phase hydrogenolysis of glycerol using gaseous hydrogen. The relative acid site densities of selected catalysts were determined by ammonia temperature-programmed desorption and pyridine desorption experiments. Based on these studies, we report a direct correlation between the catalytic activity (conversion and 1,2 propane diol yield) and two different acid sites (strong acid sites and very strong acid sites). Besides zeolite-supported catalysts, TiO2 supported PdRu nanoparticles exhibit moderate catalytic activity; however, this catalyst shows high selectivity for the desired C-O bond cleavage to produce C3 products over the undesired C-C bond cleavage to produce < C3 products. Nickel-catalyzed reductive cleavage of aryl alkyl ethers to arenes in absence of external reductant.

Project description:The reductive cleavage of the C-O bonds of aryl ethers has great potential in organic synthesis. Although several catalysts that can promote the reductive cleavage of aryl ethers have been reported, all such systems require the use of an external reductant, e.g., hydrosilane or hydrogen. Here, we report the development of a new nickel-based catalytic system that can cleave the C-O bonds of ethers in the absence of an external reductant. The hydrogen atom required in this new reductive cleavage reaction is provided by the alkoxy group of the substrate, which serves as an internal reductant. The absence of an external reductant enables the unique chemoselectivity, i.e., the selective reduction of an alkoxy group over alkenes and ketones.

Monometallic Cerium Layered Double Hydroxide Supported Pd-Ni Nanoparticles as High Performance Catalysts for Lignin Hydrogenolysis.

Project description:Monometallic cerium layered double hydroxides (Ce-LDH) supports were successfully synthesized by a homogeneous alkalization route driven by hexamethylenetetramine (HMT). The formation of the Ce-LDH was confirmed and its structural and compositional properties studied by XRD, SEM, XPS, iodometric analyses and TGA. HT-XRD, N2-sorption and XRF analyses revealed that by increasing the calcination temperature from 200 to 800 °C, the Ce-LDH material transforms to ceria (CeO2) in four distinct phases, i.e., the loss of intramolecular water, dehydroxylation, removal of nitrate groups and removal of sulfate groups. When loaded with 2.5 wt% palladium (Pd) and 2.5 wt% nickel (Ni) and calcined at 500 °C, the PdNi-Ce-LDH-derived catalysts strongly outperform the PdNi-CeO2 benchmark catalyst in terms of conversion as well as selectivity for the hydrogenolysis of benzyl phenyl ether (BPE), a model compound for the α-O-4 ether linkage in lignin. The PdNi-Ce-LDH catalysts showed full selectivity towards phenol and toluene while the PdNi-CeO2 catalysts showed additional oxidation of toluene to benzoic acid. The highest BPE conversion was observed with the PdNi-Ce-LDH catalyst calcined at 600 °C, which could be related to an optimum in morphological and compositional characteristics of the support.

Project description:Either mono- or dibromination of benzyl methyl ethers can be achieved by controlling the amount of NBS and the temperature. Elimination of methyl bromide from the monobrominated intermediates produces aromatic aldehydes, whereas hydrolysis of the dibrominated intermediates affords aromatic methyl esters in good yields.
