ABSTRACT:

Objective

To examine associations with occupational livestock or other animal dust exposure and offspring cancer risk.

Methods

In this population-based case-control study of Danish children aged < 17 years old, 5078 childhood cancer cases diagnosed 1968-2016 were matched to cancer-free controls by birth year and sex (n = 123,228). Occupational livestock or animal dust exposure was identified using a job-exposure matrix. We employed multivariable conditional logistic regression models to estimate associations with offspring cancer for births 1968-2016 and 1989-2016, with the latter timeframe reflecting a period of presumed higher exposure due to changes in Danish farming practices. Sensitivity analyses considered place of birth (urban areas vs. rural areas and small towns).

Results

For births 1968-2016, paternal exposure from offspring birth to cancer diagnosis was associated with central nervous system tumors (adjusted odds ratio [OR] = 1.30, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.63) and germ cell tumors (OR = 1.82, 95% CI 1.05-3.27), while maternal pregnancy exposure was associated with astrocytoma (OR = 1.89, 95% CI 1.00-3.57). For births 1989-2016, paternal exposure from offspring birth to cancer diagnosis was negatively associated with acute lymphoid leukemia (OR = 0.58, 95% CI 0.33-1.00). For births in rural areas only, maternal exposure from offspring birth to cancer diagnosis was positively associated with acute myeloid leukemia (OR = 2.16, 95% CI 1.09-4.29).

Conclusions

This study suggests that paternal occupational animal exposure is associated with offspring germ cell tumors, and maternal pregnancy exposure with astrocytomas. Our results are mixed with respect to leukemia subtypes.

Project description:BackgroundDespite increasing awareness, silica dust-induced silicosis still contributes to the huge disease burden in China. Worryingly, recent silica dust exposure levels and silicosis risk in Chinese noncoal mines remain unclear.ObjectiveWe aimed to determine recent silica dust exposure levels and assess the risk of silicosis in Chinese noncoal mines.MethodsBetween May and December 2020, we conducted a retrospective cohort study on 3 noncoal mines and 1 public hospital to establish, using multivariable Cox regression analyses, prediction formulas of the silicosis cumulative hazard ratio (H) and incidence (I) and a cross-sectional study on 155 noncoal mines in 10 Chinese provinces to determine the prevalence of silica dust exposure (PDE), free silica content, and total dust and respirable dust concentrations. The qualitative risk of silicosis was assessed using the International Mining and Metals Commission's risk-rating table and the occupational hazard risk index; the quantitative risk was assessed using prediction formulas.ResultsKaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed significant differences in the silicosis probability between silica dust-exposed male and female miners (log-rank test χ21=7.52, P=.01). A total of 126 noncoal mines, with 29,835 miners and 4623 dust samples, were included; 13,037 (43.7%) miners were exposed to silica dust, of which 12,952 (99.3%) were male. The median PDE, free silica content, total dust concentration, and respirable dust concentration were 61.6%, 27.6%, 1.30 mg/m3, and 0.58 mg/m3, respectively, indicating that miners in nonmetal, nonferrous metal, small, and open-pit mines suffer high-level exposure to silica dust. Comprehensive qualitative risk assessment showed noncoal miners had a medium risk of silicosis, and the risks caused by total silica dust and respirable silica dust exposure were high and medium, respectively. When predicting H and I over the next 10, 20, and 30 years, we assumed that the miner gender was male. Under exposure to current total silica dust concentrations, median I10, I20, and I30 would be 6.8%, 25.1%, and 49.9%, respectively. Under exposure to current respirable silica dust concentrations, median I10, I20, and I30 would be 6.8%, 27.7%, and 57.4%, respectively. These findings showed that miners in nonmetal, nonferrous metal, small, and open-pit mines have a higher I and higher qualitative silicosis risk.ConclusionsChinese noncoal miners, especially those in nonmetal, nonferrous metal, small, and open-pit mines, still suffer high-level exposure to silica dust and a medium-level risk of silicosis. Data of both total silica dust and respirable silica dust are vital for occupational health risk assessment in order to devise effective control measures to reduce noncoal mine silica dust levels, improve miners' working environment, and reduce the risk of silicosis.

Project description:During production, thermally modified wood is processed using the same machining operations as unmodified wood. Machining wood is always accompanied with the creation of dust particles. The smaller they become, the more hazardous they are. Employees are exposed to a greater health hazard when machining thermally modified wood because a considerable amount of fine dust is produced under the same processing conditions than in the case of unmodified wood. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) states that wood dust causes cancer of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses and of the nasopharynx. Wood dust is also associated with toxic effects, irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, dermatitis, and respiratory system effects which include decreased lung capacity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma and allergic reactions. In our research, granular composition of particles resulting from the process of longitudinal milling of heat-treated oak and spruce wood under variable conditions (i.e., the temperature of modification of 160, 180, 200 and 220 °C and feed rate of 6, 10 and 15 m.min-1) are presented in the paper. Sieve analysis was used to determine the granular composition of particles. An increase in fine particle fraction when the temperature of modification rises was confirmed by the research. This can be due to the lower strength of thermally modified wood. Moreover, a different effect of the temperature modification on granularity due to the tree species was observed. In the case of oak wood, changes occurred at a temperature of 160 °C and in the case of spruce wood, changes occurred at the temperatures of 200 and 220 °C. At the temperatures of modification of 200 and 220 °C, the dust fraction (i.e., that occurred in the mesh sieves, particles with the size ? 0.08 mm) ranged from 2.99% (oak wood, feed rate of 10 m.min-1) to 8.07% (spruce wood, feed rate of 6 m.min-1). Such particles might have a harmful effect on employee health in wood-processing facilities.

Project description:Occupational diseases are caused by zoonotic pathogens, which spread to humans through various types and intensities of human-livestock contact at work. In the present era, human brucellosis and tuberculosis remain the predominant occupational diseases throughout the world. However, the actual percentage of reported cases that are acquired from various livestock-related occupational groups is not well known. Therefore, we carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of previous scatter studies mentioned the occurrence of human brucellosis and tuberculosis. From 2000 to 2021, a computer search of PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, BioMed and Scopus was conducted and finally we found 71 studies (brucellosis = 54, tuberculosis = 17), which were included in this meta-analysis to calculate the aggregate prevalence using the random effects model. Moreover, I 2 statistic, Cochran's Q statistic heterogeneity and subgroup analysis were also performed. The analysis of the data showed that among the various livestock-related occupational groups, the global pooled prevalence of tuberculosis was 19% (95% CI: 09-30), which was higher than brucellosis 14% (95% CI: 10-18). In addition, North America and Africa were reported as the continents of the maximum prevalence rate of 25% (95% CI: -08-58) and 16% (95% CI: 11-21) for tuberculosis and brucellosis than the other continents. Afterwards, the individual's occupation was broken down into the following four groups: farm worker, livestock owner, livestock connected person and abattoir worker. The significant association was found between slaughterhouse workers and brucellosis prevalence (20%; 95% CI: 13-27) as well as the livestock owners and tuberculosis prevalence (28%; 95% CI: 06-50). Likely, a maximum prevalence of tuberculosis was documented among workers ages 20 to 49 years, and of brucellosis among those between the ages of 20 and 25, which suggests that age also had a role. Therefore, it is concluded that the livestock-related occupational groups were found to be at an increased risk of adverse zoonotic disease outcomes. Future studies could be focused on specific occupational group that are in high risk of disease transmission to minimize the effect of these two hazardous pathogens.
