Online Resources for People Who Self-Harm and Those Involved in Their Informal and Formal Care: Observational Study with Content Analysis.

ABSTRACT: Despite recent fears about online influences on self-harm, the internet has potential to be a useful resource, and people who self-harm commonly use it to seek advice and support. Our aim was to identify and describe UK-generated internet resources for people who self-harm, their friends or families, in an observational study of information available to people who search the internet for help and guidance. The different types of advice from different websites were grouped according to thematic analysis. We found a large amount of advice and guidance regarding the management of self-harm. The most detailed and practical advice, however, was limited to a small number of non-statutory sites. A lay person or health professional who searches the web may have to search through many different websites to find practical help. Our findings therefore provide a useful starting point for clinicians who wish to provide some guidance for their patients about internet use. Websites change over time and the internet is in constant flux, so the websites that we identified would need to be reviewed before making any recommendations to patients or their families or friends.

Project description:BackgroundBoth formal and informal caregivers play pivotal roles in long-term dementia care, demonstrating a shared dedication to providing comprehensive care and support for individuals with dementia. These two caregiver groups exhibit both similarities and differences in their caregiving experiences, contributing to variations in subjective well-being outcomes. However, limited research has compared the psychological well-being and self-rated health of these two caregiver groups, or explored the influencing factors. This knowledge gap hinders the development of targeted interventions and support strategies tailored to different caregiving contexts and informs supportive policymaking.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted among 440 caregivers of individuals with dementia, including 229 informal caregivers and 211 formal caregivers. Psychological well-being was assessed using the short version of Ryff's Psychological Well-being Scale, while self-rated health was measured using a summative item from a validated instrument. Caregiving appraisal and coping were evaluated separately using the Chinese version of the Caregiving Appraisal Scale and Ways of Coping Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, t-tests, Chi-square tests, and multivariate stepwise regression analyses were employed for data analysis.ResultsFormal caregivers exhibited significantly better psychological well-being and self-rated health compared to informal caregivers. Moreover, formal caregivers reported more positive caregiving appraisals than their informal counterparts. However, there was no statistical difference in coping strategies between the two groups. The psychological well-being of informal caregivers was primarily influenced by coping (standardized β = 0.309) and caregiving mastery (standardized β = 0.270). For formal caregivers, their psychological well-being was mainly influenced by caregiving satisfaction (standardized β = 0.267) and caregiving intensity (standardized β = 0.242). Both informal (standardized β = 0.354) and formal caregivers' (standardized β = 0.156) self-rated health were influenced by passive coping.ConclusionsThis study provides valuable insights for developing tailored interventions and support systems aimed at improving the psychological well-being and self-rated health of informal and formal caregivers of people with dementia. To enhance the psychological well-being of informal caregivers, interventions targeting improvements in coping skills and caregiving mastery can be designed; while for formal caregivers, interventions focusing on enhancing caregiving satisfaction and effective coping strategies may be beneficial. Improving the passive coping and caregiving appraisals may help improve the self-rated health of both groups.

Project description:BackgroundOnline resources constitute a new and effective way to obtain support or information during bereavement processes. However, little is known about the needs, use and expectations of people bereaved by suicide regarding online resources.MethodThe objective of our national cross-sectional online survey was to collect the use, needs and expectations of people bereaved by suicide regarding online resources. The data were collected from July to October 2021 through a 26-item online questionnaire hosted on the website LimeSurvey.ResultsA total of 401 respondents fully completed the questionnaire. Their mean age was 45.7. The majority of participants were women bereaved by the suicide of their child or partner. Half of the participants were bereaved for less than 3 years and benefited from counselling during their bereavement process. Three-quarters of the participants used the Internet for their bereavement process, mainly to obtain information on suicide bereavement and suicide prevention and to access testimonies of other people bereaved by suicide. Three-quarters of the participants found that available online resources for people bereaved by suicide are insufficient and expected a dedicated web platform to be developed. Finding information on suicide bereavement and on suicide prevention, discussing with a mental health professional and accessing testimonies of other people bereaved by suicide were expected by a majority of the participants regarding the future platform. Receiving counselling and being bereaved by the death of a child were the most important factors in explaining patterns of use and expectations regarding online resources.DiscussionOur results offer precise insights into the needs, use and expectations of people bereaved by suicide regarding online resources. The development of web platforms offering access to reliable information on suicide bereavement and on suicide prevention to peers bereaved by suicide and help to seek counselling are urgently needed.

Project description:Informal ready-to-eat food vending is an important, cheap, convenient, accessible and readily available urban food supply sector that has become an increasingly important part of the diets of people in developing cities in Africa and throughout other contexts in the Global South. Over decades, despite challenges associated with health and hygiene, street foods have been informally accepted as part of the urban food supply system, particularly among the urban poor. Despite the importance of street foods to food security and employment needs in urban Nigeria and elsewhere, very little is known about the governance arrangements (whether formal or informal) revolving around their food provisioning practices. The paper explores governance arrangements that steer and shape food provisioning practices in Ibadan, Nigeria. Taking a social practice approach, the paper analyses the interconnections between governance and ready-to-eat food vending practices. It doing so, it draws on insights generated through a qualitative study incorporating in-depth interviews and participant observation methods to understand different governance arrangements revolving around food vending practices. The findings reveal that formal and informal governance structures are jointly steering and shaping practices of informal ready-to-eat food vending. They furthermore highlight the crucial role informal middlemen fulfill in informal food governance chains. These insights provide new avenues for thinking about food governance of urban food supply systems in terms of co-governance between formal and informal actors. They also provide empirical evidence that can aid policy application and implementation on urban food supply systems going forward. The paper concludes by discussing the potential of a co-governance informal food sector framework that recognizes and encompasses the formal-informal nature of the food sector. Such an approach recognizes and involves informal middlemen in the governance of informal ready-to-eat street food vending embedded in a larger framework of food system governance.
