Exploring the Usage Intentions of Wearable Medical Devices: A Demonstration Study.

ABSTRACT:

Background

In the face of an aging society, an immediate and preventive medical system urgently needs to be established, and the application of wearable devices is essential. However, the application of smart medical care in Taiwan is still not widespread, and few studies have explored the related issues of wearable medical device usage. Thus, determining the success of a wearable medical device mainly depends on the degree of user adoption and use.

Objective

The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that influence the intention to use wearable medical devices.

Methods

This study applied the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) to build a comprehensive model that explains intentions to use wearable medical devices.

Results

The research findings showed that health consciousness and trust were the strongest predictors of intentions to use wearable medical devices.

Conclusions

The results reveal the magnitudes of the impacts of the variables in a well-accepted revised UTAUT model in the context of the medical industry, particularly in the setting of wearable medical devices. Several important implications for academics and industry decision-makers can be formulated from these results.

Project description:Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT) is a large language model developed by OpenAI that has gained widespread interest. It has been cited for its potential impact on health care and its beneficial role in medical education. However, there is limited investigation into its use among medical students. In this study, we evaluated the frequency of ChatGPT use, motivations for use, and preference for ChatGPT over existing resources among medical students in the United States. Data was collected from an original survey consisting of 14 questions assessing the frequency and usage of ChatGPT in various contexts within medical education. The survey was distributed via email lists, group messaging applications, and classroom lectures to medical students across the United States. Responses were collected between August and October 2023. One hundred thirty-one participants completed the survey and were included in the analysis. Of the total, 48.9% respondents responded that they have used ChatGPT in medical studies. Among ChatGPT users, 43.7% of respondents report using ChatGPT weekly, several times per week, or daily. ChatGPT is most used for writing, revising, editing, and summarizing purposes. 37.5% and 41.3% of respondents reported using ChatGPT more than 25% of the working time for these tasks respectively. Among respondents who have not used ChatGPT, more than 50% of respondents reported they were extremely unlikely or unlikely to use ChatGPT across all surveyed scenarios. ChatGPT users report they are more likely to use ChatGPT over directly asking professors or attendings (45.3%), textbooks (42.2%), and lectures (31.7%), and least likely to be used over popular flashcard application Anki (11.1%) and medical education videos (9.5%). ChatGPT is an increasingly popular resource among medical students, with many preferring ChatGPT over other traditional resources such as professors, textbooks, and lectures. Its impact on medical education will only continue to grow as its capabilities improve.

Project description:BackgroundConsumer-oriented wearable devices (CWDs) such as smartphones and smartwatches have gained prominence for their ability to detect atrial fibrillation (AF) through proprietary algorithms using electrocardiography or photoplethysmography (PPG)-based digital recordings. Despite numerous individual validation studies, a direct comparison of interdevice performance is lacking.ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate and compare the ability of CWDs to distinguish between sinus rhythm and AF.MethodsPatients exhibiting sinus rhythm or AF were enrolled through a cardiology outpatient clinic. The participants were instructed to perform heart rhythm measurements using a handheld 6-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) device (KardiaMobile 6L), a smartwatch-derived single-lead ECG (Apple Watch), and two PPG-based smartphone apps (FibriCheck and Preventicus) in a random sequence, with simultaneous 12-lead reference ECG as the gold standard.ResultsA total of 122 participants were included in the study: median age 69 (IQR 61-77) years, 63.9% (n=78) men, 25% (n=30) with AF, 9.8% (n=12) without prior smartphone experience, and 73% (n=89) without experience in using a smartwatch. The sensitivity to detect AF was 100% for all devices. The specificity to detect sinus rhythm was 96.4% (95% CI 89.5%-98.8%) for KardiaMobile 6L, 97.8% (95% CI 91.6%-99.5%) for Apple Watch, 98.9% (95% CI 92.5%-99.8%) for FibriCheck, and 97.8% (95% CI 91.5%-99.4%) for Preventicus (P=.50). Insufficient quality measurements were observed in 10.7% (95% CI 6.3%-17.5%) of cases for both KardiaMobile 6L and Apple Watch, 7.4% (95% CI 3.9%-13.6%) for FibriCheck, and 14.8% (95% CI 9.5%-22.2%) for Preventicus (P=.21). Participants preferred Apple Watch over the other devices to monitor their heart rhythm.ConclusionsIn this study population, the discrimination between sinus rhythm and AF using CWDs based on ECG or PPG was highly accurate, with no significant variations in performance across the examined devices.
