A joint model of household time use and task assignment for elderly couples with multiple constraints.

ABSTRACT: Household time-use patterns are expected to reflect each household member's daily activity participation and duration with intra-household interactions constrained by multiple budgets. Among various activities, the allocated activity derived from undertaking a household task is studied relatively less in the literature. Who will take an allocated activity is a discrete choice problem of household task assignment, and once a household member is assigned with one household task, other members will have more time to do other activities. To better understand household time-use patterns affected by household task assignment, this paper proposed a joint household-level multiple discrete-continuous extreme value-multinomial logit (MDCEV-MNL) model with multiple constraints. The Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) method combined with the simulation-based maximum likelihood estimation method is proposed to estimate the proposed model. Based on the household activity-travel data from Beijing of China, the proposed model is customized to explore elderly couples' time-use patterns with intra-household interactions affected by household task assignment. Following the findings, policy implications are suggested to build an age-friendly society.

Project description:IntroductionPrevious studies suggest female smoking increases time-to-pregnancy (TTP), a couple-dependent reproductive outcome, while associations with male smoking are more ambiguous. Furthermore, despite small increases in smokeless tobacco use in the United States, no prior study has evaluated TTP among smokeless tobacco users.MethodsUsing population-based sampling in 16 counties in Michigan and Texas, 501 couples discontinuing contraception to become pregnant were followed until positive pregnancy test or 12 months of trying. Participants were interviewed on lifetime and current cigarette, cigar, and chew/snuff (smokeless) use and provided blood samples for quantification of heavy metals and cotinine. Fecundability odds ratios (FORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated, adjusted for demographics/lifestyle. FORs less than 1 reflect longer TTP.ResultsEleven percentage of females and 15% of males smoked cigarettes. Among men, 14% smoked cigars, 9% used snuff, and 2% used chew. Compared with never tobacco users, male (FOR: 0.41, 95% CI: 0.24, 0.68) and female (FOR: 0.53, 95% CI: 0.33, 0.85) smoking were individually associated with longer TTP; males' smoking remained significant (FOR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.27, 0.79) when modeling partners together. Cadmium levels were higher in smokers than smokeless tobacco and never users; adjusting for cadmium attenuated the cigarette-TTP association, particularly among women. TTP was shorter among smokeless tobacco users relative to smokers (FOR: 2.86, 95% CI: 1.47, 5.57).ConclusionsCompared with never users, smokeless tobacco did not alter TTP in our cohort; however, TTP was shorter compared with smokers. We observed longer TTP in male and female smokers; cadmium may partially contribute.ImplicationsBoth partners' preconception smoking contributed to longer TTP, highlighting the importance of both partners' lifestyles in healthy reproduction and underscores the need for couple-based preconception guidance. The male's contribution is a new finding. Higher cadmium levels may partially contribute to longer TTP in smokers, particularly among females. Though we do not observe longer TTP among a small sample of smokeless tobacco users compared with never tobacco users, we observe shorter TTP compared with smokers. Further work is needed to more thoroughly delineate the relationship between smokeless tobacco use and TTP and possible mechanisms of tobacco use's effects on reproduction.

Project description:BackgroundThe availability of genome sequences for many organisms enabled the reconstruction of several genome-scale metabolic network models. Currently, significant efforts are put into the automated reconstruction of such models. For this, several computational tools have been developed that particularly assist in identifying and compiling the organism-specific lists of metabolic reactions. In contrast, the last step of the model reconstruction process, which is the definition of the thermodynamic constraints in terms of reaction directionalities, still needs to be done manually. No computational method exists that allows for an automated and systematic assignment of reaction directions in genome-scale models.ResultsWe present an algorithm that - based on thermodynamics, network topology and heuristic rules - automatically assigns reaction directions in metabolic models such that the reaction network is thermodynamically feasible with respect to the production of energy equivalents. It first exploits all available experimentally derived Gibbs energies of formation to identify irreversible reactions. As these thermodynamic data are not available for all metabolites, in a next step, further reaction directions are assigned on the basis of network topology considerations and thermodynamics-based heuristic rules. Briefly, the algorithm identifies reaction subsets from the metabolic network that are able to convert low-energy co-substrates into their high-energy counterparts and thus net produce energy. Our algorithm aims at disabling such thermodynamically infeasible cyclic operation of reaction subnetworks by assigning reaction directions based on a set of thermodynamics-derived heuristic rules. We demonstrate our algorithm on a genome-scale metabolic model of E. coli. The introduced systematic direction assignment yielded 130 irreversible reactions (out of 920 total reactions), which corresponds to about 70% of all irreversible reactions that are required to disable thermodynamically infeasible energy production.ConclusionAlthough not being fully comprehensive, our algorithm for systematic reaction direction assignment could define a significant number of irreversible reactions automatically with low computational effort. We envision that the presented algorithm is a valuable part of a computational framework that assists the automated reconstruction of genome-scale metabolic models.

Project description:BackgroundBehavioural approaches to knowledge translation inform interventions to improve healthcare. However, such approaches often focus on a single behaviour without considering that health professionals perform multiple behaviours in pursuit of multiple goals in a given clinical context. In resource-limited consultations, performing these other goal-directed behaviours may influence optimal performance of a particular evidence-based behaviour. This study aimed to investigate whether a multiple goal-directed behaviour perspective might inform implementation research beyond single-behaviour approaches.MethodsWe conducted theory-based semi-structured interviews with 12 general medical practitioners (GPs) in Scotland on their views regarding two focal clinical behaviours--providing physical activity (PA) advice and prescribing to reduce blood pressure (BP) to <140/80 mmHg--in consultations with patients with diabetes and persistent hypertension. Theory-based constructs investigated were: intention and control beliefs from the theory of planned behaviour, and perceived interfering and facilitating influence of other goal-directed behaviours performed in a diabetes consultation. We coded interview content into pre-specified theory-based constructs and organised codes into themes within each construct using thematic analysis.ResultsMost GPs reported strong intention to prescribe to reduce BP but expressed reasons why they would not. Intention to provide PA advice was variable. Most GPs reported that time constraints and patient preference detrimentally affected their control over providing PA advice and prescribing to reduce BP, respectively. Most GPs perceived many of their other goal-directed behaviours as interfering with providing PA advice, while fewer GPs reported goal-directed behaviours that interfere with prescribing to reduce BP. Providing PA advice and prescribing to reduce BP were perceived to be facilitated by similar diabetes-related behaviours (e.g., discussing cholesterol). While providing PA advice was perceived to be mainly facilitated by providing other lifestyle-related clinical advice (e.g., talking about weight), BP prescribing was reported as facilitated by pursuing ongoing standard consultation-related goals (e.g., clearly structuring the consultation).ConclusionGPs readily relate their other goal-directed behaviours with having a facilitating and interfering influence on their performance of particular evidence-based behaviours. This may have implications for advancing the theoretical development of behavioural approaches to implementation research beyond single-behaviour models.
