The Chicken and Egg of Pride and Social Rank.

ABSTRACT: Prior research has found an association between pride experiences and social rank outcomes. However, the causal direction of this relationship remains unclear. The current research used a longitudinal design (N = 1,653) to investigate whether pride experiences are likely to be a cause, consequence, or both, of social rank outcomes, by tracking changes in individuals' pride and social rank over time. Prior research also has uncovered distinct correlational relationships between the two facets of pride, authentic and hubristic, and two forms of social rank, prestige and dominance, respectively. We therefore separately examined longitudinal relationships between each pride facet and each form of social rank. Results reveal distinct bidirectional relationships between authentic pride and prestige and hubristic pride and dominance, suggesting that specific kinds of pride experiences and specific forms of social rank are both an antecedent and a consequence of one another.

Social relationship satisfaction and PTSD: which is the chicken and which is the egg?

Project description:BackgroundImpaired social relationships are linked with higher levels of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but the association's underlying dynamics are unknown. PTSD may impair social relationships, and, vice versa, poorer relationship quality may interfere with the recovery from PTSD.ObjectiveThis work longitudinally evaluates the simultaneous progression of PTSD symptoms and social relationship satisfaction (SRS) in a large cohort of recent trauma survivors. It also explores the effect of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) on the association between the two.MethodConsecutive emergency department trauma admissions with qualifying PTSD symptoms (n=501) were assessed 3 weeks and 5 months after trauma admission. The World Health Organization Quality of Life evaluated SRS and the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale evaluated PTSD symptom severity. Ninety-eight survivors received CBT between measurement sessions. We used Structural Equation Modeling to evaluate cross-lagged effects between the SRS and PTSD symptoms.ResultsThe cross-lagged effect of SRS on PTSD was statistically significant (β=-0.12, p=0.01) among survivors who did not receive treatment whilst the effect of PTDS on SRS was nil (β=-0.02, p=0.67). Both relationships were non-significant among survivors who received CBT.DiscussionSRS and PTSD are highly associated, and this study shows that changes in SRS in the early aftermath of traumatic events contribute to changes in PTSD, rather than vice versa. SRS impacts natural recovery, but not effective treatment. This study suggests that being satisfied with one's relationships might be considered as an important factor in natural recovery from trauma, as well as in intervention.

A puzzle piece of protein N-glycosylation in chicken egg: N-glycoproteome of chicken egg vitelline membrane.

Project description:The chicken egg vitelline membrane (CEVM) is an important structure for the transmembrane transport of egg yolk components, protection of the blastodisc, and separation of egg white and egg yolk. In this study, the N-glycoproteome of the CEVM was mapped and analyzed in depth. Total protein of the CEVM was digested, and the glycopeptides were enriched by a hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography microcolumn and identified by nano liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. A total of 435 N-glycosylation sites on 208 N-glycoproteins were identified in CEVM. Gene Ontology enrichment analysis showed that CEVM N-glycoproteins are mainly involved in the regulation of proteinases/inhibitors and transmembrane transport of lipids. Mucin-5B is the primary N-glycoprotein in the CEVM. Comparison of the main N-glycoproteins between the CEVM and other egg parts revealed the tissue specificity of N-glycosylation of egg proteins. The results provide insights into protein N-glycosylation in the chicken egg, CEVM functions and underlying mechanisms.

Displaying pride: Variation by social context, ethnic heritage, and gender?

Project description:Pride is universal; however, the complexities linked to its social status functions and implications for social relationships suggest the possibility of variation in its display. Drawing from empirical evidence, this study examined whether displayed pride would vary by social context (i.e., whether the target was a competitor or a loved one), ethnic heritage (i.e., membership in individualistic or collectivistic cultural groups) and by gender. Young adults (N = 145) verbally described a pride experience to an imagined competitor, loved one, stranger or in a no-context control condition. Results showed similarity in displayed pride across the four contexts. However, some ethnic group and gender variations were observed. Latino/a/x Americans displayed less pride verbally than European Americans while women displayed more than men. These findings contribute to a better understanding of how people manage the display of pride and suggest that ethnic and gendered motivations for managing pride displays are relevant to a comprehensive understanding of interpersonal emotion regulation.

Keratan sulfate glycosaminoglycan from chicken egg white.

Project description:Keratan sulfate (KS) was isolated from chicken egg white in amounts corresponding to ∼0.06 wt% (dry weight). This KS had a weight-average molecular weight of ∼36-41 kDa with a polydispersity of ∼1.3. The primary repeating unit present in chicken egg white KS was →4) β-N-acetyl-6-O-sulfo-d-glucosamine (1 → 3) β-d-galactose (1→ with some 6-O-sulfo galactose residues present. This KS was somewhat resistant to depolymerization using keratanase 1 but could be depolymerized efficiently through the use of reactive oxygen species generated using copper (II) and hydrogen peroxide. Of particular interest was the presence of substantial amounts of 2,8- and 2,9-linked N-acetylneuraminic acid residues in the form of oligosialic acid terminating the non-reducing ends of the KS chains. Most of the KS appears to be N-linked to a protein core as evidenced by its sensitivity to PNGase F.

Depression and Parkinson's disease: a Chicken-Egg story.

Project description:Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease, however, besides the motor symptoms, such as rest tremor, hypokinesia, postural instability and rigidity, PD patients have also non-motor symptoms, namely neuropsychiatric disorders. Apart from the required motor symptoms, psychopathological symptoms are very common and include mood disorders, anxiety disorders, hallucinations, psychosis, cognitive deterioration and dementia. The underlying pathophysiological process in PD is mainly due to the loss of dopaminergic neural cells and thereby causes the shortage of nigrostriatal dopamine content in them. In addition, it may involve other neurotransmitter systems such as the noradrenergic, serotonergic, cholinergic and noradrenergic systems as well. Depression can result from any unhealthy conditions making the diagnosis a challenging task. The manifestation of depression associated with or without PD is inadequate. The co-occurrence of depression and PD often leads to the conceptual discussion on whether depressive symptoms appear before or after PD develops. This paper will discuss the conceptual mechanism of PD and depression. Keep in mind both conditions belong to two separate entities but share some similar aspects in their pathophysiology.

Quantitative metabolome analysis of boiled chicken egg yolk.

Project description:Boiling has important effects on the texture of chicken eggs, but its effects on egg nutrients have not been systematically investigated. In this study, changes in the metabolites of egg yolks boiled under different heating intensities were quantified and compared by metabolomic analysis. A total of 797 metabolites were identified, and the abundance of 162 metabolites changed significantly after boiling. The significant reduction of L-lysine and D-fructose suggested that Maillard reactions occurred in over-boiled egg yolks. Egg yolk endogenous enzymes might induce a partial hydrolysis of proteins and phospholipids during the warm-up period of boiling, as the abundance of dipeptides, lysophospholipids, and free fatty acids was significantly increased in boiled egg yolks. Boiling increased the detectable abundance of fat-soluble vitamins, riboflavin, and biotin, possibly by altering the complex structure of protein-lipid-lipophilic compounds or denaturing vitamin-binding proteins. The results of metabolomic analyses provide important information for understanding the nutritional changes of egg yolk boiled under different heating intensities.

Sleep-disordered breathing and stroke: chicken or egg?

Project description:The bidirectional interaction between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and stroke has been the subject of many studies. On the one hand, different forms of SDB, and especially obstructive sleep apnea, increase the risk of stroke either directly or indirectly by influencing other known cardiovascular risk factors such as arterial hypertension and arrhythmias. On the other hand, stroke itself can cause either de novo appearance of SDB, aggravate a pre-existing SDB, or trigger a transition from one type of pathological SDB pattern into another. In this review, we discuss some aspects of this "chicken or egg" relationship.

Avian Sex Determination: A Chicken and Egg Conundrum.

Project description:BackgroundPrimary sex determination is the developmental process that results in the sexual differentiation of the gonads. Vertebrate sex determination is generally considered to follow the model based on the mammalian system, where a sex-specific master regulatory gene activates one of the two different gene networks that underlie testis and ovary differentiation.SummaryIt is now known that, while many of the molecular components of these pathways are conserved across different vertebrates, a wide variety of different trigger factors are utilized to initiate primary sex determination. In birds, the male is the homogametic sex (ZZ), and significant differences exist between the avian system of sex determination and that of mammals. For example, DMRT1, FOXL2, and estrogen are key factors in gonadogenesis in birds, but none are essential for primary sex determination in mammals.Key messageGonadal sex determination in birds is thought to depend on a dosage-based mechanism involving expression of the Z-linked DMRT1 gene, and it may be that this "mechanism" is simply an extension of the cell autonomous sex identity associated with avian tissues, with no sex-specific trigger required.

Chicken white egg chemerin as a tool for genetic selection for egg weight and hen fertility.

Project description:Embryo mortality rate, which can reach up to 40% in avian species, is a major issue for breeding. It is therefore important to identify new embryo development biomarkers for genetic selection to improve reproductive performances. We have recently shown that chemerin is expressed in the oviductal hen magnum, accumulates in egg white, is correlated with embryo survival and could thus be used as a molecular marker of embryo development. Eggs from seven hen breeds (n = 70) were collected during five successive days at the end of the laying period. After weighing eggs, yolk and albumen, an egg white sample from each egg was collected and a blood sample was taken from each hen. Chemerin concentrations in albumen and blood samples were measured by a specific home made ELISA assay. Hen's plasma and egg's albumen chemerin levels were found to be correlated with reproductive parameters such as fecundity, fertility, embryo mortality, hatchability and laying rates. The inter-hen chemerin level variability in albumen was higher than intra-hen except for one breed (R+). We observed significantly different levels of chemerin in egg white between breeds. However, chemerin concentrations in egg white were not significantly associated to variations of hen plasma chemerin levels. Interestingly, we observed negative correlations between albumen chemerin concentrations and egg weight (r = -0.43, p = 0.001), between albumen weight (r = -0.40, p = 0.002), and between yolk weight (r = -0.28, p = 0.03). We also showed negative correlations between egg white chemerin concentrations and fecundity (r = -0.32, p = 0.011) and fertility (r = -0.27, p = 0.04) whereas no significant correlation was observed with the laying rate. Taken together, these results suggest that egg white chemerin concentration might be a good biomarker for genetic selection for egg weight and fertility in hens, provided these data are confirmed on a larger scale.
