Ionocytes in the skin and gills of seawater (SW) fishes are responsible for acid-base regulation and salt secretion. Na<sup>+</sup>/H<sup>+</sup> exchangers (NHEs) are considered the major acid (H<sup>+</sup>)-secreting transporters in ionocytes of SW fishes.
