Nutrition-Related Information on Alcoholic Beverages in Victoria, Australia, 2021.

ABSTRACT: Alcoholic beverages sold in Australia are largely exempt from requirements to display nutrition information on packages, unlike other food and beverages. However, alcoholic beverage manufacturers can provide nutrition-related information voluntarily. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of nutrition-related information on packaged alcoholic beverages in Australia. An in-store audit of the largest alcohol retailer in Melbourne, Australia was conducted in July 2021. A systematic sampling method was used to assess the presence and format of nutrition information on 850 alcoholic beverages across 5 alcohol categories (wine (n = 200), beer (n = 200), spirits (n = 200), ready-to-drink beverages (n = 140) and ciders (n = 110)). Most products (n = 682, 80.2%) did not present nutrition-related information. Where information was presented (n = 168), it was most frequently on ready-to-drink beverages (n = 81, 57.9%) and least frequently on spirits (n = 9, 4.5%) and wines (n = 9, 4.5%). Nutrition information was most frequently in the format of a nutrition information panel (n = 150, 89.3%) and approximately half of labelled beverages (n = 86, 51.2%) included a nutrition content claim (e.g., 'low in carbs'). Given limited voluntary implementation of nutrition labelling on alcoholic beverages in Australia and the substantial contribution of alcoholic beverages to energy intake, consideration of mandatory nutrition labelling, in a standardised format designed to maximise public health benefit, on alcoholic beverages is warranted.

Project description:To elucidate the effect of the polyphenols contained in alcoholic beverages on the metabolic stress induced by ethanol consumption, four groups of mice were fed for five weeks on Lieber's diet with or without ethanol, with ethanol plus ellagic acid, and with ethanol plus trans-resveratrol. Alcoholic fatty liver was observed in the group fed the ethanol diet but not in those fed the ethanol plus polyphenol diets. Liver transcriptome analysis revealed that the addition of the polyphenols suppressed the expression of the genes related to cell stress that were up-regulated by ethanol alone. Conversely, the polyphenols up-regulated the genes involved in bile acid synthesis, unsaturated fatty acid elongation, and tetrahydrofolate synthesis that were down-regulated by ethanol alone. Because parts of these genes were known to be regulated by the constitutive androstane receptor (CAR), we performed the same experiment in the CAR-deficient mice. As a result, fatty liver was observed not only in the ethanol group but also with the ethanol plus polyphenol groups. In addition, there was no segregation of the gene expression profiles among these groups. These results provide a molecular basis for the prevention of alcohol-induced stress by the polyphenols in alcoholic beverages. Five-week-old C3H/HeN female mice (CLEA, Japan) were acclimated to the maintenance condition (25Â°C, 8:00-20:00 day / 20:00-8:00 night cycle and 35~40 % humidity), fed a CE-2 diet (CLEA, Japan), and given water ad libitum for one week. Each group of mice (n=4 for wild type mice analysis and n=3 for CAR decficient mice analysis) was fed Lieber's isocaloric diet (Oriental yeast, Japan) containing water, containing ethanol, containing ethanol and ellagic acid (Fluka Biochemika, Switzerland), or containing ethanol and trans-resveratrol (Sigma, USA) (Supplementary Table 1) for one week at 10:00 ad libitum. Then, the mice were fed each diet at 12 g / day for four weeks (Supplementary Fig. 1A). The approximate intake of each polyphenol was 50 mg / kg body weight / day. At 10:00 of the final day of the experimental period, the animals were anesthetized by diethyl ether, sacrificed by cervial fracture, and the heart blood, and the liver were collected.

Project description:BackgroundUsing government health datasets for secondary purposes is widespread; however, little is known on researchers' knowledge and reuse practices within Australia.ObjectivesTo explore researchers' knowledge and experience of governance processes, and their data reuse practices, when using Victorian government health datasets for research between 2008-2020.MethodA cross-sectional quantitative survey was conducted with authors who utilised selected Victorian, Australia, government health datasets for peer-reviewed research published between 2008-2020. Information was collected on researchers': data reuse practices; knowledge of government health information assets; perceptions of data trustworthiness for reuse; and demographic characteristics.ResultsWhen researchers used government health datasets, 45% linked their data, 45% found the data access process easy and 27% found it difficult. Government-curated datasets were significantly more difficult to access compared to other-agency curated datasets (p = 0.009). Many respondents received their data in less than six months (58%), in aggregated or de-identified form (76%). Most reported performing their own data validation checks (70%). To assist in data reuse, almost 71% of researchers utilised (or created) contextual documentation, 69% a data dictionary, and 62% limitations documentation. Almost 20% of respondents were not aware if data quality information existed for the dataset they had accessed. Researchers reported data was managed by custodians with rigorous confidentiality/privacy processes (94%) and good data quality processes (76%), yet half lacked knowledge of what these processes entailed. Many respondents (78%) were unaware if dataset owners had obtained consent from the dataset subjects for research applications of the data.ConclusionConfidentiality/privacy processes and quality control activities undertaken by data custodians were well-regarded. Many respondents included data linkage to additional government datasets in their research. Ease of data access was variable. Some documentation types were well provided and used, but improvement is required for the provision of data quality statements and limitations documentation. Provision of information on participants' informed consent in a dataset is required.
