Pentanucleotide expansion diseases constitute a special class of neurodegeneration. The repeat expansions occur in non-coding regions, have likely arisen from <i>Alu</i> elements, and often result in autosomal dominant or recessive phenotypes with underlying cerebellar neuropathology.
