Genetics and genomic competency of Turkish nurses: A descriptive cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Nurses have essential roles in genetic related healthcare, including risk assessment, referring individuals to genetics services, advocating for and educating individual, families, and communities who might benefit from genetic services.

Objective

To determine the genetics and genomic competency of Turkish nurses.

Design

A descriptive cross sectional research design was used to collect data.

Setting

Totally 385 nurses working in clinical or academic settings in Turkey were recruited between 20 January and 20 April 2020.

Methods

Data were collected using socio-demographic characteristics form and Genetics and Genomics in Nursing Practice Survey on 20 January-20 April 2020. Descriptive statistics, Kruskal Wallis, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for data analyses.

Results

A total of 385 nurses participated in this study. Most, 44.9% had a BSN degree, 42.1% were clinical nurses. Of the nurses, 34.5% reported that they had genetics included in their nursing curriculum, and 74.0% intended to learn more about genetics. The mean knowledge score was 9.36/12. Gender, primary role of nurses, and whether to see patients actively in practice were the factors effecting knowledge score of nurses in genetic and genomics.

Conclusions

Turkish nurses' genomics skills need additional development and integration of genomics to the nursing curriculum can be effective to decrease their knowledge gaps. Clinical nurses' genomic competency should improve to increase the nursing care quality.

Project description:BackgroundNurses are responsible for providing genetics and genomics health care services, including disease risk assessment, medical referrals, and advocating for communities and individuals who probably benefit from genomics and genetics services.ObjectiveThis study aimed to investigate Chinese nurses' understanding and previous training in genomics and genetics. Additionally, we aimed to understand the degree to which Chinese nurses use genomics and genetics knowledge in their daily practice and to assess the learning needs regarding genomics and genetics.MethodThis study utilized the design of a descriptive cross-sectional study. From January 18 to March 15, 2022, 406 registered nurses from the Shandong province of China working in clinical institutions and with good English proficiency were recruited as study subjects. Nurses' demographic data and data related to genetic knowledge and competency were collected using the Genetics and Genomics Nursing Practice Survey (GGNPS) questionnaire. Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney-U tests were utilized to investigate the descriptive statistics and non-normally distributed data.ResultsThere are 406 nurses from Shandong Province, China participated in the study. Among them, BSN degrees accounted for 83.7%. Female nurses accounted for 96.8%, and 40% are clinical nurses. Among such nurses, 65.5% reported that genetics was involved in their nursing courses, and 56.2% planned to study more knowledge associated with genetics. The mean knowledge score was 7.35 (out of 12). Nurses' gender, primary role, genomics education, and experience caring for patients with common diseases influenced nurses' scores on genetic and genomics knowledge.ConclusionThe genomics knowledge and competency of Chinese nurses need to be further improved. Incorporating genomics into the standard nursing curriculum can effectively reduce the knowledge gap. Simultaneously, it is also necessary to improve the attention of senior nurses and nursing managers to genomics nursing and improve the clinical practice environment.

Project description:BackgroundThe role of nurses in shared decision-making (SDM) within the healthcare decision-making process has increasingly gained attention The ability of nurses to engage in effective SDM can significantly impact patient outcomes and satisfaction with care. Given the palliative care continues to evolve, this study aimed to investigate the level of SDM competency and explore associated factors among palliative care nurses in China.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted between June and July 2024. The convenience sample was recruited from five online Chinese palliative care nurse groups. Anonymous data were collected through a self-designed sociodemographic questionnaire, the Shared Decision-Making Competency Scale (SDMCS) and the Empathy Ability Scale (EAS). Multivariate linear regression was performed to explore the factors associated with SDM competency.ResultsA total of 429 palliative care nurses from 30 provinces or municipalities across China participated in this study. The Chinese palliative care nurses had a high level of SDM competency (mean total SDMCS 211.72 ± 25.75) and high empathic ability (EA), (mean total EAS 132.63 ± 20.30). There was a positive correlation between EA and SDM competency (r = 0.704, P < 0.01). The EA (β = 0.683, P<0.001), experiences of SDM training (β=-0.155, P<0.001) and educational background (β=-0.142, P = 0.007) were statistically significant factors influencing nurses' SDM competency based on multiple linear regression analysis. These associated factors could explain 55.4% of the difference in SDM competency.ConclusionsThis study found that palliative care nurses in China exhibited high levels of SDM competency and a high level of EA. Nurses with postgraduate education, SDM training experience, and high EA demonstrated higher levels of SDM competency compared to those without these attributes. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating structured SDM training programs in nursing education and professional development initiatives, particularly focused on building empathy skills.

Project description:Although, strengthening patient safety competencies in nursing has been emphasized for enhancing quality care and patient safety. However, little is known about the association of nurses' perceptions of patient safety competency with adverse nurse outcomes in Iranian hospitals. This study aimed to measure nurses' levels of patient safety competency in the hospitals of Iran and examines the relationship between patient safety competency with the occurrence and reporting of adverse events (AEs). This cross-sectional research was applied in eight teaching hospitals in Tehran, Iran, between August and December 2021. A sample of 511 nurses was randomly selected using the table of random numbers. The validated Patient Safety Competency Self-Evaluation questionnaire was used. Furthermore, two questions were used to measure the incidence and reporting of AEs. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, independent t-tests, and two binary logistic regression models through SPSS version 24.0. The mean patient safety competency score was 3.34 (SD = 0.74) out of 5.0; 41.5% of nurses rated their patient safety competency as less than 3. Among subscales, "skills of patient safety" scores were the highest, and "knowledge of patient safety" scores were the lowest. Nurses with higher Knowledge and Attitude scores were less likely to experience the occurrence of AEs (OR = 1.50 and OR = 0.58, respectively). Regarding AEs reporting, nurses with higher Skill and Attitude scores were 2.84 and 1.67 times, respectively, more likely to report AEs (OR = 2.84 and OR = 3.44, respectively). Our results provide evidence that enhancing PSC leads to reduced incidence of AEs and increased nurses' performance in reporting. Therefore, it is recommended that managers of hospitals should enhance the patient safety competency of nurses in incidents and reporting of patient safety adverse outcomes through quality expansion and training. Additionally, researchers should carry out further research to confirm the findings of the current study and identify interventions that would strengthen patient safety competencies and reduce the occurrence of AEs, and rise their reporting among nurses.
