A Co-Learning Model for Community-Engaged Program Evaluation.

ABSTRACT:

Objectives

The development, implementation, and assessment of a masters-level program evaluation course designed to train future and current leaders of community-based organizations (CBOs) is described.

Background

In addition to sending students "out" into the community, staff from local community organizations were invited "in" to the classroom to take the course alongside students. Community partners selected a specific evaluation need within their organization that teams could address. The "final" for the course involved creating a comprehensive evaluation plan for each organization to implement.

Methods

Student course evaluations and semistructured interviews with community partners were conducted and analyzed to assess how course goals were met.Results/Lessons Learned: The course goals were met, the partnering experience was highly valued, and insightful improvements were suggested.

Conclusions

This program evaluation course provides an innovative, effective, flexible, and replicable partnership practice model that builds student skills and community capacity in evaluation research.

Project description:BackgroundCommunity-engaged research is defined by the Institute of Medicine as the process of working collaboratively with groups of people affiliated by geographic proximity, special interests, or similar situations with respect to issues affecting their well-being. Traditional face-to-face community-engaged research is limited by geographic location, limited in resources, and/or uses one-way communications. Web 2.0 technologies including social media are novel communication channels for community-engaged research because these tools can reach a broader audience while promoting bidirectional dialogs.ObjectiveThis paper reports on a preliminary program evaluation of the use of social media platforms for promoting engagement of researchers and community representatives in dialogs about community-engaged research.MethodsFor this pilot program evaluation, the Clinical and Translational Science Office for Community Engagement in Research partnered with the Social Media Network at our institution to create a WordPress blog and Twitter account. Both social media platforms were facilitated by a social media manager. We used descriptive analytics for measuring engagement with WordPress and Twitter over an 18-month implementation period during 2014-2016. For the blog, we examined type of user (researcher, community representative, other) and used content analysis to generate the major themes from blog postings. For use of Twitter, we examined selected demographics and impressions among followers.ResultsThere were 76 blog postings observed from researchers (48/76, 64%), community representatives (23/76, 32%) and funders (5/76, 8%). The predominant themes of the blog content were research awareness and dissemination of community-engaged research (35/76, 46%) and best practices (23/76, 30%). For Twitter, we obtained 411 followers at the end of the 18-month evaluation period, with an increase of 42% (from 280 to 411) over the final 6 months. Followers reported varied geographic location (321/411, 78%, resided in the United States); 99% (407/411) spoke English; and about half (218/411, 53%) were female. Followers produced 132,000 Twitter impressions.ConclusionsResearchers and community stakeholders use social medial platforms for dialogs related to community-engaged research. This preliminary work is novel because we used Web 2.0 social media platforms to engage these stakeholders whereas prior work used face-to-face formats. Future research is needed to explore additional social media platforms; expanded reach to other diverse stakeholders including patients, providers, and payers; and additional outcomes related to engagement.

Project description:BackgroundRevitalizing primary health care requires that the health workforce, especially doctors, must appreciate the significance of the socio-cultural environment in health. To achieve this objective, training of medical students must emphasize greater understanding of the community and its role in health through community engagement using community-engaged learning. However, research on this learning method applied in a purely community engagement context is lacking. A medical school in Ghana adapted its fourth-year junior clerkship curriculum in Community Health to include a community-engagement programme. This study reports students' perceptions of the said programme as a way of evaluating it and helping to improve upon its implementation.MethodsA cross-sectional survey using a Google form-based questionnaire with open- and closed-ended questions was conducted from May 2022 to December 2023 among 303 current and past medical students of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ghana who had experienced the said programme. Based on the first three levels of the Kirkpatrick's four-level model of training evaluation, data was collected on participants' socio-demographics, their assessment of the programme content and delivery, subsequent attitudinal changes and their application to practice. Descriptive statistics were performed on quantitative data and thematic content analysis done for responses to the open-ended questions.ResultsMore than half of participants were males (188/303). The mean (SD) participant age was 23.9 years (2.4). Over 90% indicated the programme was valuable to their training (277/297) and were satisfied with the facilitators (283/297) despite some anxieties expressed at the start of their clerkship. Participants noted that they acquired other skills including teamwork and leadership aside the reinforced academic content. At least 99% of participants noted they could conduct the processes of community entry and engagement with or without assistance.ConclusionAlthough there is room for improvement, the students' community engagement programme may have some utility in the training of medical students to enable them better appreciate community interactions that influence health. Further research incorporating objective assessments of learning and behaviour change is needed to comprehensively assess the programme.
