Project description:We obtain the general solution of the generalized quartic functional equation f(x + my) + f(x - my) = 2(7m - 9)(m - 1)f(x) + 2m²(m² - 1)f(y)-(m - 1)² f(2x) + m²{f(x + y) + f(x - y)} for a fixed positive integer m. We prove the Hyers-Ulam stability for this quartic functional equation by the directed method and the fixed point method on real Banach spaces. We also investigate the Hyers-Ulam stability for the mentioned quartic functional equation in non-Archimedean spaces.

Project description:Zeolite stability, in terms of lattice energy, is revisited from a crystal-chemistry point of view. A linearized equation relates the zeolite lattice energy using simple structural data readily available from experiments or modeling. The equation holds for a large range of zeolite energies, up to 3 eV per tetrahedron with respect to quartz, and has been validated internally via two simple machine learning automatic procedures for data fitting/reference partitions and externally using data from recently synthesized zeolites. The approach is certain in locating those recently synthesized zeolites in the energy range of those experimentally known zeolites used in the parametrization of the linearized equation. Hidden intrinsic structural data-energy correlations were found for data sets built from energy-relaxed structures along with energy values computed using the same energy functions employed in the structural relaxation. The asymmetry of the structural features is relevant for an accurate description of the energy.

Project description:We consider a recently suggested "equation of state" for natively folded proteins, and verify its validity for a set of about 5800 proteins. The equation is based on a fractal viewpoint of proteins, on a generalization of the Landau-Peierls instability, and on a marginal stability criterion. The latter allows for coexistence of stability and flexibility of proteins, which is required for their proper function. The equation of state relates the protein fractal dimension d(f), its spectral dimension d(s), and the number of amino acids N. Using structural data from the protein data bank (PDB) and the Gaussian network model (GNM), we compute d(f) and d(s) for the entire set and demonstrate that the equation of state is well obeyed. Addressing the fractal properties and making use of the equation of state may help to engineer biologically inspired catalysts.

Project description:Betanin is the only betalain approved for use in food and pharmaceutical products as a natural red colorant. However, the antioxidant power and health-promoting properties of this pigment have been disregarded, perhaps due to the difficulty in obtaining a stable chemical compound, which impairs its absorption and metabolism evaluation. Herein, betanin was purified by semi-preparative HPLC-LC/MS and identified by LC-ESI(+)-MS/MS as the pseudomolecular ion m/z 551.16. Betanin showed significant stability up to -30 °C and mild stability at chilling temperature. The stability and antioxidant ability of this compound were assessed during a human digestion simulation and ex vivo colon fermentation. Half of the betanin amount was recovered in the small intestine digestive fluid and no traces were found after colon fermentation. Betanin high antioxidant ability was retained even after simulated small intestine digestion. Betanin, besides displaying an inherent colorant capacity, was equally effective as a natural antioxidant displaying peroxy-radical scavenger ability in pork meat. Betanin should be considered a multi-functional molecule able to confer an attractive color to frozen or refrigerated foods, but with the capacity to avoid lipid oxidation, thereby preserving food quality. Long-term supplementation by beetroot, a rich source of betanin, should be stimulated to protect organisms against oxidative stress.

Project description:Collagen model peptides (CMPs) consisting of proline-(2S,4R)-hydroxyproline-glycine (POG) repeats have provided a breadth of knowledge of the triple helical structure of collagen, the most abundant protein in mammals. Predictive tools for triple helix stability have, however, lagged behind since the effect of CMPs with different frames ([POG]n , [OGP]n , or [GPO]n ) and capped or uncapped termini have so far been underestimated. Here, we elucidated the impact of the frame, terminal functional group and its charge on the stability of collagen triple helices. Combined experimental and theoretical studies with frame-shifted, capped and uncapped CMPs revealed that electrostatic interactions, strand preorganization, interstrand H-bonding, and steric repulsion at the termini contribute to triple helix stability. We show that these individual contributions are additive and allow for the prediction of the melting temperatures of CMP trimers.

Project description:Electrolytic aqueous zinc-manganese (Zn-Mn) batteries have the advantage of high discharge voltage and high capacity due to two-electron reactions. However, the pitfall of electrolytic Zn-Mn batteries is the sluggish deposition reaction kinetics of manganese oxide during the charge process and short cycle life. We show that, incorporating ZnO electrolyte additive can form a neutral and highly viscous gel-like electrolyte and render a new form of electrolytic Zn-Mn batteries with significantly improved charging capabilities. Specifically, the ZnO gel-like electrolyte activates the zinc sulfate hydroxide hydrate assisted Mn2+ deposition reaction and induces phase and structure change of the deposited manganese oxide (Zn2Mn3O8·H2O nanorods array), resulting in a significant enhancement of the charge capability and discharge efficiency. The charge capacity increases to 2.5 mAh cm-2 after 1 h constant-voltage charging at 2.0 V vs. Zn/Zn2+, and the capacity can retain for up to 2000 cycles with negligible attenuation. This research lays the foundation for the advancement of electrolytic Zn-Mn batteries with enhanced charging capability.

Project description:We study the nonlinear integrable equation, u t + 2((u x u xx )/u) = ϵu xxx , which is invariant under scaling of dependent variable and was called the SIdV equation (see Sen et al. 2012 Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simul. 17, 4115-4124 (doi:10.1016/j.cnsns.2012.03.001)). The order-n kink solution u [n] of the SIdV equation, which is associated with the n-soliton solution of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, is constructed by using the n-fold Darboux transformation (DT) from zero 'seed' solution. The kink-type solutions generated by the onefold, twofold and threefold DT are obtained analytically. The key features of these kink-type solutions are studied, namely their trajectories, phase shifts after collision and decomposition into separate single kink solitons.

Project description:The plastic waste problem has recently attracted unprecedented attention globally. To reduce the adverse eff ects on environments, biodegradable polymers have been studied to solve the problems. Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) is one of the common biodegradable plastics used on its own or blended with natural polymers because of its excellent properties after blending. However, PCL and natural polymers are difficult to blend due to the polymers' properties. Grafted polymerization of maleic anhydride and dibenzoyl peroxide (DBPO) with PCL is one of the improvements used for blending immiscible polymers. In this study, we first focused on the effects of three factors (stirring time, maleic anhydride (MA) amount and benzoyl peroxide amount) on the grafting ratio with a maximum value of 4.16% when applying 3.000 g MA and 1.120 g DBPO to 3.375 g PCL with a stirring time of 18 h. After that, the grafting condition was studied based on the kinetic thermal decomposition and activation energy by the Coats-Redfern method. The optimal fitting model was confirmed by the determination coefficient of nearly 1 to explain the contracting volume mechanism of synthesized PCL-g-MA. Consequently, grafted MA hydrophilically augmented PCL as the reduced contact angle of water suggests, facilitating the creation of a plastic-biomaterial composite.

Project description:Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have recently gained increasing attention because of the long operation lifetime achieved. However, bathocuproine (BCP): a commonly used buffer layer in inverted PSCs, is experimentally confirmed by us to show fast aggregation at the temperature of 85 °C, which is the protocol temperature required by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard. This thermal instability of the BCP interfacial layer makes long-term thermal stability of inverted PSCs questionable. Simply removing or replacing it can directly lead to an inferior PCE of a device. We solve this problem by removing the BCP layer and simultaneously increasing the thickness of C60, which obtains a high efficiency of 18% comparable with the device with BCP. This is possibly attributed to the extended migration path of carriers from C60 to metal electrode Ag, consequently reducing the carrier accumulation at the interface. In addition to the interfacial modification, the addition of ionic liquid: BMIMBF4 into perovskite can further improve a device's thermal stability by its effective suppression of perovskite decomposition. The devices with 0.4 mol% of BMIMBF4 exhibit promising thermal stability by retaining 80% of their initial PCE after thermal aging of 400 h at 85 °C.

Project description:The control of morphology and microstructure during and after the active layer processing of bulk-heterojunction solar cells is critical to obtain elevated fill factors and overall good device performance. With the recent development of non-fullerene acceptors, wide attention has been paid to improve miscibility, solubility and nanoscale separation by laborious molecular design processes and by the use of additives. Nonetheless, several post-processing strategies can equally contribute to obtain an optimum phase separation and even to an enhanced crystallinity, but their effect on performance and device lifetime of polymer/non-fullerene acceptor solar cells is still unclear. Herein, we report a systematic comparison between different post-processing treatments including thermal annealing (TA), vacuum drying (VD) and solvent vapor annealing (SVA) on the TPD-3F polymer and IT-4F non-fullerene acceptor, comparing their effects on device performance as well as on the morphology and optical and electrical properties. The optimized SVA treated devices exhibited power conversion efficiencies close to 14% with a remarkable 76% fill factor and superior short-circuit currents compared to the one of untreated devices. Moreover, SVA demonstrated improvements in device stability both under illumination and under ambient conditions. The induced phase separation and the increased crystallinity of the acceptor molecules, as revealed by GIWAXS measurements, led to increased photogenerated currents, with a more effective exciton dissociation and charge collection. The open-circuit voltage losses in the SVA and TA devices were explained by a bandgap reduction and a higher trap-assisted recombination, respectively. Overall, our study points to the role of post-processing in organic solar cell fabrication, and contributes towards a new generation of efficient and stable additive-free organic solar cells.
