Project description:In this article, we introduce a functional structural equation model for estimating directional relations from multivariate functional data. We decouple the estimation into two major steps: directional order determination and selection through sparse functional regression. We first propose a score function at the linear operator level, and show that its minimization can recover the true directional order when the relation between each function and its parental functions is nonlinear. We then develop a sparse functional additive regression, where both the response and the multivariate predictors are functions and the regression relation is additive and nonlinear. We also propose strategies to speed up the computation and scale up our method. In theory, we establish the consistencies of order determination, sparse functional additive regression, and directed acyclic graph estimation, while allowing both the dimension of the Karhunen-Loéve expansion coefficients and the number of random functions to diverge with the sample size. We illustrate the efficacy of our method through simulations, and an application to brain effective connectivity analysis.

Project description:Zeolite stability, in terms of lattice energy, is revisited from a crystal-chemistry point of view. A linearized equation relates the zeolite lattice energy using simple structural data readily available from experiments or modeling. The equation holds for a large range of zeolite energies, up to 3 eV per tetrahedron with respect to quartz, and has been validated internally via two simple machine learning automatic procedures for data fitting/reference partitions and externally using data from recently synthesized zeolites. The approach is certain in locating those recently synthesized zeolites in the energy range of those experimentally known zeolites used in the parametrization of the linearized equation. Hidden intrinsic structural data-energy correlations were found for data sets built from energy-relaxed structures along with energy values computed using the same energy functions employed in the structural relaxation. The asymmetry of the structural features is relevant for an accurate description of the energy.

Project description:The aim of this paper is to develop a novel class of functional structural equation models (FSEMs) for dissecting functional genetic and environmental effects on twin functional data, while characterizing the varying association between functional data and covariates of interest. We propose a three-stage estimation procedure to estimate varying coefficient functions for various covariates (e.g., gender) as well as three covariance operators for the genetic and environmental effects. We develop an inference procedure based on weighted likelihood ratio statistics to test the genetic/environmental effect at either a fixed location or a compact region. We also systematically carry out the theoretical analysis of the estimated varying functions, the weighted likelihood ratio statistics, and the estimated covariance operators. We conduct extensive Monte Carlo simulations to examine the finite-sample performance of the estimation and inference procedures. We apply the proposed FSEM to quantify the degree of genetic and environmental effects on twin white-matter tracts obtained from the UNC early brain development study.

Project description:We prove a general result on Ulam's type stability of the functional equation f(x + y) = f(x) + f(y), in the class of functions mapping a commutative group into a commutative group. As a consequence, we deduce from it some hyperstability outcomes. Moreover, we also show how to use that result to improve some earlier stability estimations given by Isaac and Rassias.

Project description:We consider a recently suggested "equation of state" for natively folded proteins, and verify its validity for a set of about 5800 proteins. The equation is based on a fractal viewpoint of proteins, on a generalization of the Landau-Peierls instability, and on a marginal stability criterion. The latter allows for coexistence of stability and flexibility of proteins, which is required for their proper function. The equation of state relates the protein fractal dimension d(f), its spectral dimension d(s), and the number of amino acids N. Using structural data from the protein data bank (PDB) and the Gaussian network model (GNM), we compute d(f) and d(s) for the entire set and demonstrate that the equation of state is well obeyed. Addressing the fractal properties and making use of the equation of state may help to engineer biologically inspired catalysts.

Project description:The plastic waste problem has recently attracted unprecedented attention globally. To reduce the adverse eff ects on environments, biodegradable polymers have been studied to solve the problems. Poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) is one of the common biodegradable plastics used on its own or blended with natural polymers because of its excellent properties after blending. However, PCL and natural polymers are difficult to blend due to the polymers' properties. Grafted polymerization of maleic anhydride and dibenzoyl peroxide (DBPO) with PCL is one of the improvements used for blending immiscible polymers. In this study, we first focused on the effects of three factors (stirring time, maleic anhydride (MA) amount and benzoyl peroxide amount) on the grafting ratio with a maximum value of 4.16% when applying 3.000 g MA and 1.120 g DBPO to 3.375 g PCL with a stirring time of 18 h. After that, the grafting condition was studied based on the kinetic thermal decomposition and activation energy by the Coats-Redfern method. The optimal fitting model was confirmed by the determination coefficient of nearly 1 to explain the contracting volume mechanism of synthesized PCL-g-MA. Consequently, grafted MA hydrophilically augmented PCL as the reduced contact angle of water suggests, facilitating the creation of a plastic-biomaterial composite.

Project description:In this work two kinds of smooth (compactons or cnoidal waves and solitons) and nonsmooth (peakons) solutions to the general Degasperis-Procesi (gDP) equation and its family (Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation, modified DP equation, Camassa-Holm (CH) equation, modified CH equation, Benjamin-Bona-Mahony (BBM) equation, etc.) are reported in detail using different techniques. The single and periodic peakons are investigated by studying the stability analysis of the gDP equation. The novel compacton solutions to the equations under consideration are derived in the form of Weierstrass elliptic function. Also, the periodicity of these solutions is obtained. The cnoidal wave solutions are obtained in the form of Jacobi elliptic functions. Moreover, both soliton and trigonometric solutions are covered as a special case for the cnoidal wave solutions. Finally, a new form for the peakon solution is derived in details. As an application to this study, the fluid basic equations of a collisionless unmagnetized non-Maxwellian plasma is reduced to the equation under consideration for studying several nonlinear structures in the plasma model.

Project description:The compression of argon is measured between 10 K and 296 K up to 20 GPa and and up to 114 GPa at 296 K in diamond anvil cells. Three samples conditioning are used: (1) single crystal sample directly compressed between the anvils, (2) powder sample directly compressed between the anvils, (3) single crystal sample compressed in a pressure medium. A partial transformation of the face-centered cubic (fcc) phase to a hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structure is observed above 4.2-13 GPa. Hcp phase forms through stacking faults in fcc-Ar and its amount depends on pressurizing conditions and starting fcc-Ar microstructure. The quasi-hydrostatic equation of state of the fcc phase is well described by a quasi-harmonic Mie-Grüneisen-Debye formalism, with the following 0 K parameters for Rydberg-Vinet equation: [Formula: see text] = 38.0 Å[Formula: see text]/at, [Formula: see text] = 2.65 GPa, [Formula: see text] = 7.423. Under the current experimental conditions, non-hydrostaticity affects measured P-V points mostly at moderate pressure ([Formula: see text] 20 GPa).

Project description:Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is the main inhibitor of plasminogen activators, such as tissue-type plasminogen activator (t-PA) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA), and a major regulator of the fibrinolytic system. PAI-1 plays a pivotal role in acute thrombotic events such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and myocardial infarction (MI). The biological effects of PAI-1 extend far beyond thrombosis including its critical role in fibrotic disorders, atherosclerosis, renal and pulmonary fibrosis, type-2 diabetes, and cancer. The conversion of PAI-1 from the active to the latent conformation appears to be unique among serpins in that it occurs spontaneously at a relatively rapid rate. Latency transition is believed to represent a regulatory mechanism, reducing the risk of thrombosis from a prolonged antifibrinolytic action of PAI-1. Thus, relying solely on plasma concentrations of PAI-1 without assessing its function may be misleading in interpreting the role of PAI-1 in many complex diseases. Environmental conditions, interaction with other proteins, mutations, and glycosylation are the main factors that have a significant impact on the stability of the PAI-1 structure. This review provides an overview on the current knowledge on PAI-1 especially importance of PAI-1 level and stability and highlights the potential use of PAI-1 inhibitors for treating cardiovascular disease.

Project description:The relationship between biodiversity and functional redundancy has remained ambiguous for over a half-century, likely due to an inability to distinguish between positivist and apophatic (that which is missing) properties of ecosystems. Apophases are best addressed by mathematics that is predicated upon absence, such as information theory. More than 40 years ago, the conditional entropy of a flow network was proposed as a formulaic way to quantify trophic functional redundancy, an advance that has remained relatively unappreciated. When applied to a collection of 25 fully quantified trophic networks, this authoritative index correlates only poorly and transitively with conventional Hill numbers used to represent biodiversity. Despite such a weak connection, the underlying biomass distribution remains useful in conjunction with the qualitative diets of system components for providing a quick and satisfactory emulation of a system's functional redundancy. Furthermore, an information-theoretic cognate of the Wigner Semicircle Rule can be formulated using network conditional entropy to provide clues to the relative stability of any ecosystem under study. The necessity for a balance between positivist and apophatic attributes pertains to the functioning of a host of other living ensemble systems.
