Nutritional Support in Patients Undergoing Surgical Treatment of Colorectal Cancer

ABSTRACT: According to available data, 30-60% of patients are undernourished at hospital admission. The significance of the perioperative nutrition has already been studied in the 1930s. The outcomes of published studies demonstrated that patients with basic nutrient deficiencies have a higher frequency of postoperative complications and have a significantly longer recovery period. The main aim of the this prospective clinical trial is to evaluate the loss of muscle mass and strength of the patient, the self-sufficiency and the possibility of returning to normal activities, in relation to pre-operatively served nutritional supplements in patients undergoing elective surgery for colorectal cancer.

Sugarcane transcriptome - Phosphate starvation

Project description:Rooted sugarcane plantlets, originated from in vitro meristem culture (genotype SP80-3280, CTC, Brazil), were greenhouse acclimatized by initial cultivation on 1/20th strength Hoagland and Arnon (1950) nutrient solution. Nutrient solutions were aired from an oil-less compressor and replaced every 7 days, increasing nutrient concentration to ¼ strength in 3 weeks. Plants were then individually transferred to 2.8 L pots filled with fresh ¼ strength nutrient solution. After one week, half of the plants were transferred to fresh solution containing 250 µM Pi, while the other half was transferred to nutrient solution deprived of phosphate (Pi), with H2PO4 being replaced by H2SO4 (Muchhal et al., 1996). Roots from six plants from each treatment (0 and 250 µM Pi) were harvested 6, 12, 24 and 48 h after exposure to phosphate starvation and immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen. For each time point and each treatment, root samples were aggregated in three pools of two samples each. Extraction of total RNA was performed separately on each sample pool. Transcriptome analysis of iron and phosphorus interaction in rice seedlings

Project description:The antagonistic interaction between iron (Fe) and phosphorus (P) has been noted in the area of plant nutrition. To understand the physiology and molecular mechanisms of this interaction, we studied the growth performance, nutrient concentration, and gene expression profiles of root and shoot segments derived from 10-d-old rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings under four different nutrient conditions: (1) full strength of Fe and P (+Fe+P); (2) full strength of P and no Fe (-Fe+P); (3) full strength of Fe and no P (+Fe-P); and (4) without both Fe and P (-Fe-P). We used Affymetrix genechip to detail the global programme of gene expression underlying different Fe and P supply conditions identified distinct classes of up-regulated genes.

A cluster-randomized trial of water, sanitation, handwashing and nutritional interventions on stress and epigenetic programming

Project description:A regulated stress response is essential for healthy child growth and development trajectories. We conducted a cluster-randomized trial in rural Bangladesh (funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01590095) to assess the effects of an integrated nutritional, water, sanitation, and handwashing intervention on child health. We previously reported on the primary outcomes of the trial, linear growth and caregiver-reported diarrhea. Here, we assessed additional prespecified outcomes: physiological stress response, oxidative stress, and DNA methylation (N = 759, ages 1-2 years). Eight neighboring pregnant women were grouped into a study cluster. Eight geographically adjacent clusters were block-randomized into the control or the combined nutrition, water, sanitation, and handwashing (N+WSH) intervention group (receiving nutritional counseling and lipid-based nutrient supplements, chlorinated drinking water, upgraded sanitation, and handwashing with soap). Participants and data collectors were not masked, but analyses were masked. There were 358 children (68 clusters) in the control group and 401 children (63 clusters) in the intervention group. We measured four F2-isoprostanes isomers (iPF(2α)-III; 2,3-dinor-iPF(2α)-III; iPF(2α)-VI; 8,12-iso-iPF(2α)-VI), salivary alpha-amylase and cortisol, and methylation of the glucocorticoid receptor (NR3C1) exon 1F promoter including the NGFI-A binding site. Compared with control, the N+WSH group had lower concentrations of F2-isoprostanes isomers (differences ranging from -0.16 to -0.19 log ng/mg of creatinine, P<0.01), elevated post-stressor cortisol (0.24 log µg/dl; P<0.01), higher cortisol residualized gain scores (0.06 µg/dl; P=0.023), and decreased methylation of the NGFI-A binding site (-0.04; P=0.037). The N+WSH intervention enhanced adaptive responses of the physiological stress system in early childhood.

Rapid nutritional regulation of oligodendrocytes of the adult hypothalamic median eminence revealed by single-cell transcriptomic analysis

Project description:The median eminence (ME) of the hypothalamus is a structure that rapidly adapts to nutrient availability. We have used single-cell RNA sequencing to characterize the transcriptional profiles of cells specifically in the median eminence in the fasted and refed states. In our study, we focus on characterizing the oligodendrocyte population of the ME, and identifying how subpopulations respond to nutrient availability.
