Sex-related differences in gene expression contribute to recurrence in the post-operative ileum

ABSTRACT: Question: How does gene expression in CD patients change after ileal resection, and what factors impact these expression changes? Findings: This study assessed RNA-seq and genetic components of 339 samples collected from recurring and non-recurring severe CD patients following ileal resection. We found that males have more pronounced changes in gene expression, with pathway analysis implicating divergent ESR1, ESR2, vs. PGR effects. Meaning: Sex-specific differences in gene expression have implications for tailored prediction, diagnosis, and treatment of patients.
