Colostrum metabolomic profiling of periparturient dairy cows supplemented with high-dose chromium propionate before calving

ABSTRACT: This study contains untargeted LC-MS/MS metabolomic profiles of colostrum samples collected at the first milking after calving from Holstein dairy cows in the control and high-dose chromium propionate supplementation groups. Cows received either a basal total mixed ration without supplemental chromium propionate or the same ration supplemented with 20 g chromium propionate per cow per day, providing 8 mg Cr(III) per cow per day, from 21 days before expected calving until parturition. Colostrum samples were collected after teat cleaning and disinfection, mixed thoroughly from the whole first milking, and analyzed to characterize colostrum metabolic responses associated with prepartum chromium propionate supplementation during the periparturient period.

INSTRUMENT(S): Liquid Chromatography MS - negative - reverse-phase, Liquid Chromatography MS - positive - reverse-phase
