Project description:Many previous studies had revealed that gastrointestinal microbiome is changed compositionally and ecologically in patients with colorectal cancer comparing with healthy population. These finding provide us with a new sight to take advantage of gut microbiota. The current study aims to explore new potential biomarkers for early screening and prognostic prediction of colorectal cancer and colorectal polyps by analyzing metagenomics and metabolomics of gut microbiota.
Project description:The Virochip microarray (version 4.0) was used to detect viruses in patients from North America with unexplained influenza-like illness at the onset of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. We used metagenomics-based technologies (the Virochip microarray) and deep sequencing to analyze nasal swab samples from individuals with 2009 H1N1 infection. This Series includes the Virochip microarray data only.
Project description:Epigenetic regulation of gene expression and host defense is well established in microbial communities, with dozens of DNA modifications comprising the epigenomes of prokaryotes and bacteriophage. Phosphorothioation (PT) of DNA, in which a chemically-reactive sulfur atom replaces a non-bridging oxygen in the sugar-phosphate backbone, is catalyzed by dnd and ssp gene families widespread in bacteria and archaea. However, little is known about the role of PTs or other microbial epigenetic modifications in the human microbiome. Here we optimized and applied fecal DNA extraction, mass spectrometric, and metagenomics technologies to characterize the landscape and temporal dynamics of gut microbes possessing PT modifications.
Project description:The microbiome plays a significant role in gut brain communication and is linked to several animal and human diseases. Hypertension is characterized by gut dysbiosis, and this study aimed to determine how the gut microbiome differed between male and female normotensive and hypertensive rodents. WKY is a genetic control for spontaneous hypertensive rats or SHR which is well documented to have elevated blood pressure at approximately 8 to 10 weeks. We compared the microbiome of normotensive and hypertensive rodents using a meta-genomics approach.
