Project description:Origanum oil (ORO), garlic oil (GAO), and peppermint oil (PEO) were shown to effectively lower methane production, decrease abundance of methanogens, and change abundances of several bacterial populations important to feed digestion in vitro. In this study, the impact of these essential oils (EOs, at 0.50 g/L), on the rumen bacterial community composition was further examined using the recently developed RumenBactArray.
Project description:This study investigates temporal dynamics in microbial community function within the freshwater ecosystem of Lake Zurich, Switzerland, over three months (36 timepoints). Metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) and metaproteomes were analyzed to identify species-specific and community-level protein expression patterns. The study explores how bacterial species contribute to ecosystem functioning through protein-level activity, focusing on relationships between species taxonomy, abundance, and protein investment patterns.
Project description:Sulfoquinovose (SQ) is a major organosulfonate in nature, and thus plays an important role in the biogeochemical sulfur and carbon cycles. We identified a bacterial anaerobic consortium, enriched from lake Konstanz, which degraded SQ to isethionate as intermediate and further into acetate and sulfide. By a metagenomic analysis we identified Faecalicatena sp. DSM22707 as major SQ-degrader in the consortium. Strain DSM22707 degraded SQ in pure culture into isethionate and small amounts of sulfolactate.
