Project description:The fungal endophyte Pestalotiopsis sp. 9143 was found naturally infected with the endohyphal bacterium Luteibacter mycovicinis 9143. The fungus can be cured of the bacterium by culturing on antibiotics and the bacterium can be isolated from the fungus by culturing at high temperatures or mechanical disruption. This study investigates the transcriptomes of both partners cultured indepedently (axenically) and in coculture. The goal was to understand the changes in gene expression that accompany partner presence in order to identify genes and pathways that may facilitate the interaction.

Project description:Global warming has become a critical challenge to food safety, causing severe yield losses of major crops worldwide. Here, we report that the endophytic bacterium Enterobacter sp. SA187 induces thermotolerance of crops in a sustainable manner. Microbiome diversity of wheat plants is positively influenced by SA187 in open field agriculture, indicating that beneficial microbes can be a powerful tool to enhance agriculture in open field agriculture.

Project description:An endophytic fungus Pestalotiopsis microspora isolated from the fruits of Manilkara zapota was cultured in potato dextrose broth media. Chromatographic separation of the EtOAc extract of the broth and mycelium led to the isolation of a new azaphilonoid named pitholide E (1), in addition to previously identified pitholide B (2), pitholide D (3), pestalotin (LL-P880α) (4), PC-2 (5), LL-P880β (6), tyrosol (7) and 4-oxo-4H-pyran-3-acetic acid (8). An endophytic fungus P. microspora from M. zapota and the isolation of compounds 1-5, 7 and 8 from P. microspora are reported here for the first time.
