Development and validation of a questionnaire (GHOST) to assess sudden, unexplained communication exclusion or "ghosting".

ABSTRACT: The topic of "ghosting" as a method of terminating a relationship has been discussed in both popular media and academic circles. Although research on this issue is scarce, the concept has acquired popularity and gained scholarly attention. A reliable and valid measure of this phenomenon does not, however, exist. GHOST (The Ghosting Questionnaire) was designed and psychometrically tested to explore ghostee experiences. A total of 811 adults participated in an online survey to test this instrument. It was developed based on a thorough analysis of research on the topic of ghosting using a phenomenological qualitative method to identify ghosting domains and generate questionnaire items. In terms of content validity and construct validity, the final version of the measure was found to be satisfactory. GHOST was found to have adequate internal consistency - scores of 0.74, 0.74, and 0.80, indicating acceptable Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's omega, and ordinal's alpha coefficients, respectively. Factor analyses found the GHOST questionnaire to be a valid and reliable instrument that can be used for screening ghosting experiences and for designing community-based distress prevention and intervention programs. A dynamic fit index (DFI) cutoffs approach was also used and showed robust fitting.

Project description:IntroductionRefractory or unexplained chronic cough (RUCC) is a common clinical problem with no effective diagnostic tools. The Sensations and Triggers Provoking Cough questionnaire (TOPIC) was developed to characterise cough in RUCC versus cough in other conditions.MethodsContent analysis of participant interviews discussing the sensations and triggers of chronic cough informed TOPIC development. Participants with chronic cough completed the draft-TOPIC (a subset repeating 5-7 days later), St George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), Cough Severity Diary (CSD) and Global Rating of Change Scale. The draft-TOPIC item list was reduced in hierarchical and Rasch analysis to refine the questionnaire to the TOPIC.Results49 items describing the triggers and sensations of cough were generated from participant interviews (RUCC n=14, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) n=11, interstitial lung disease (ILD) n=10, asthma n=11, bronchiectasis n=3, cystic fibrosis n=7). 140 participants (median age 60.0 (19.0-88.0), female 56.4%; RUCC n=39, ILD n=38, asthma n=45, COPD n=6, bronchiectasis n=12) completed draft-TOPIC, where items with poor 'fit' for RUCC were removed to create TOPIC (8 trigger items, 7 sensation items). Median TOPIC score was significantly higher in RUCC (37.0) vs ILD (24.5, p=0.009) and asthma (7.0, p<0.001), but not bronchiectasis (20.0, p=0.318) or COPD (18.5, p=0.238), likely due to small sample sizes. The Rasch model demonstrated excellent fit in RUCC (χ2=22.04, p=0.85; PSI=0.88); as expected. When all participant groups were included, fit was no longer demonstrated (χ2=66.43, p=0.0001, PSI=0.89) due to the increased heterogeneity (CI=0.077). TOPIC correlated positively with SGRQ (r=0.47, p<0.001) and CSD (r=0.63, p<0.001). The test-retest reliability of TOPIC (intraclass correlation coefficient) was excellent (r=0.90, p<0.001).ConclusionsHigh TOPIC scores in the RUCC patients suggest their cough is characterised by specific sensations and triggers. Validation of TOPIC in cough clinics may demonstrate value as an aid to identify features of RUCC versus cough in other conditions.

Project description:BackgroundThe food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) is the most frequently used method to assess dietary intake in epidemiological studies evaluating diet-disease association. The objective of this study was to validate a FFQ for use among Lebanese adults by evaluating various facets of validity and reproducibility.MethodsThe quantitative 164-items FFQ was validated against the average of six 24-h dietary recalls (DRs) in a sample of 238 Lebanese adults. Reproducibility of the FFQ was assessed by administering it twice within 1 month' time interval.ResultsPositive statistically significant Pearson correlations were observed in most macro and micronutrients between the FFQ and the six 24-h DRs, ranging from 0.16 to 0.65, with two thirds of the correlation coefficients exceeding 0.3. Energy, gender, and age-adjusted statistically significant Pearson correlation coefficients ranged from 0.14 to 0.64, with two thirds of the coefficients exceeding 0.2. Intakes from the FFQ were mostly higher than those of the 24-h DRs. Mean percent difference between nutrient intakes from both dietary methods decreased remarkably after using energy-adjusted mean intakes. Values were acceptable to good for all macronutrients and several micronutrients. Cross-classification analysis revealed that around 64.3 to 83.9% of participants were classified into the same and adjacent quartile whereas grossly misclassified proportions ranged from 3.7 to 12.2%. Weighted kappa values ranged from 0.02 to 0.36 with most of them exceeding 0.2. In indirect validity analysis, key nutrient mean intakes estimated from the six 24-h DRs were significantly positively associated with tertiles of food groups derived from the FFQ. Bland Altman plots showed that the majority of data points fell within the limits of agreement (LOA) for all nutrients. As for reproducibility analysis, ICC values were all statistically significant ranging from 0.645 to 0.959 and Bland Altman plots confirmed these results.ConclusionsBased on various aspects of validity and reproducibility, and an extensive range of statistical tests, the present FFQ developed for a Lebanese community is an acceptable tool for dietary assessment and is useful for evaluating diet-disease associations in future studies.

Project description:BackgroundLifestyle is intimately related to health. A questionnaire that specifically scores the healthiness of lifestyle of Catalan adolescents is needed. The objective of this study was to develop and validate a scoring questionnaire called VISA-TEEN to assess the healthy lifestyle of young Catalans that can be answered quickly and user-friendly.MethodsA lifestyle questionnaire was developed based on the analysis of contributions from two focus groups, one with adolescents and the other with people who work with them (teachers and doctors). A panel of experts validated the content of items that were ultimately selected for the VISA-TEEN questionnaire. Three hundred ninety-six adolescents (215 boys and 181 girls, age = 13-19 years) completed the VISA-TEEN. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach's alpha (α) reliability coefficient. Test-retest reliability, using an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), was calculated based on scores attained two weeks apart. Construct validity was assessed by the extraction of components with an exploratory factor analysis. The relationship between the scores was measured using the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) KIDSCREEN-10 Index (the relationship was assessed by calculating Pearson's r correlation coefficient). The association of scores in the VISA-TEEN for self-rated health (SRH) was also examined by executing an analysis of variance (ANOVA) between the different categories of this variable. We also calculated the index of fit for factor scales (IFFS) for each component, as well as the discriminatory power of the instrument using Ferguson's δ (delta) coefficient.ResultsThe VISA-TEEN questionnaire showed acceptable reliability (α = 0.66, αest = 0.77) and a very good test-retest agreement (ICC = 0.860). It could be broken down into the following five components, all with an acceptable or very good IFFS (0.7-0.96): diet, substance abuse, physical activity, Rational Use of Technological Leisure (RUTL), and hygiene. Scores on the VISA-TEEN showed significant correlation with the KIDSCREEN index (r = 0.21, p < 0.001) and were associated with SRH (p < 0.001). The discriminatory power was found to be δ = 0.97.ConclusionsThe VISA-TEEN questionnaire developed to study the lifestyle of Catalan adolescents is a valid instrument to apply in this population as it is shown in the present psychometric tests to understand the role of lifestyle in the health of teenagers or to test the efficacy of health campaigns intended to improve teenagers' lifestyle.
