Phosphite is the most energetically favorable chemotrophic electron donor known, with a half-cell potential (<i>E</i><sup>o</sup>') of -650 mV for the PO<sub>4</sub><sup>3-</sup>/PO<sub>3</sub><sup>3-</sup> couple.
