Adapting the coordination of eyes and head to differences in task and environment during fully-mobile visual exploration.

ABSTRACT: How are eyes and head adapted to meet the demands of visual exploration in different tasks and environments? In two studies, we measured the horizontal movements of the eyes (using mobile eye tracking in Studies 1 and 2) and the head (using inertial sensors in Study 2) while participants completed a walking task and a search and retrieval task in a large, outdoor environment. We found that the spread of visual exploration was greater while searching compared with walking, and this was primarily driven by increased movement of the head as opposed to the eyes. The contributions of the head to gaze shifts of different eccentricities was greater when searching compared to when walking. Findings are discussed with respect to understanding visual exploration as a motor action with multiple degrees of freedom.

Eye-head coordination for visual cognitive processing.

Project description:We investigated coordinated movements between the eyes and head ("eye-head coordination") in relation to vision for action. Several studies have measured eye and head movements during a single gaze shift, focusing on the mechanisms of motor control during eye-head coordination. However, in everyday life, gaze shifts occur sequentially and are accompanied by movements of the head and body. Under such conditions, visual cognitive processing influences eye movements and might also influence eye-head coordination because sequential gaze shifts include cycles of visual processing (fixation) and data acquisition (gaze shifts). In the present study, we examined how the eyes and head move in coordination during visual search in a large visual field. Subjects moved their eyes, head, and body without restriction inside a 360° visual display system. We found patterns of eye-head coordination that differed those observed in single gaze-shift studies. First, we frequently observed multiple saccades during one continuous head movement, and the contribution of head movement to gaze shifts increased as the number of saccades increased. This relationship between head movements and sequential gaze shifts suggests eye-head coordination over several saccade-fixation sequences; this could be related to cognitive processing because saccade-fixation cycles are the result of visual cognitive processing. Second, distribution bias of eye position during gaze fixation was highly correlated with head orientation. The distribution peak of eye position was biased in the same direction as head orientation. This influence of head orientation suggests that eye-head coordination is involved in gaze fixation, when the visual system processes retinal information. This further supports the role of eye-head coordination in visual cognitive processing.

Task-driven visual exploration at the foveal scale.

Project description:Humans use saccades to inspect objects of interest with the foveola, the small region of the retina with highest acuity. This process of visual exploration is normally studied over large scenes. However, in everyday tasks, the stimulus within the foveola is complex, and the need for visual exploration may extend to this smaller scale. We have previously shown that fixational eye movements, in particular microsaccades, play an important role in fine spatial vision. Here, we investigate whether task-driven visual exploration occurs during the fixation pauses in between large saccades. Observers judged the expression of faces covering approximately 1°, as if viewed from a distance of many meters. We use a custom system for accurately localizing the line of sight and continually track gaze position at high resolution. Our findings reveal that active spatial exploration, a process driven by the goals of the task, takes place at the foveal scale. The scanning strategies used at this scale resemble those used when examining larger scenes, with idiosyncrasies maintained across spatial scales. These findings suggest that the visual system possesses not only a coarser priority map of the extrafoveal space to guide saccades, but also a finer-grained priority map that is used to guide microsaccades once the region of interest is foveated.

Locomotor Coordination, Visual Perception and Head Stability during Running.

Project description:Perception and action are coupled such that information from the perceptual system is related to the dynamics of action in order to regulate behavior adaptively. Using running as a model of a cyclic behavior, this coupling involves a continuous, cyclic relationship between the runner's perception of the environment and the necessary adjustments of the body that ultimately result in a stable pattern of behavior. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how individuals relate visual perception to rhythmic locomotor coordination patterns in conditions during which foot-ground collisions and visual task demands are altered. We review the findings of studies conducted to illustrate how humans change their behavior to maintain head stability during running with and without various degrees of visual challenge from the environment. Finally, we show that the human body adapts specific segment/joint configuration and coordination patterns to maintain head stability, both in the lower extremity and upper body segments, together with an increase in coordinative variability. These results indicate that in human locomotion, under higher speed (running) and visual task demands, systematic adaptations occur in the rhythmic coupling between the perceptual and movement systems.

Infants born preterm demonstrate reduced task-specific exploration during the scaffolded kick-activated mobile task.

Project description:This study quantified the spatial exploration of 13 infants born very and extremely preterm (PT) at 4 months corrected age as they learned that moving their feet vertically to cross a virtual threshold activated an infant kick-activated mobile and compared results to 15 infants born full-term (FT) from a previously published study. Spatial exploration was quantified using two general spatial exploration variables (exploration volume, exploration path), two task-specific spatial variables (duration of time in the task-specific region of interest, vertical variance of kicks), and one non-task-specific spatial variable (horizontal variance of kicks). The infants born PT, similar to FT, increased their general spatial exploration and duration in the region of interest and did not change the vertical and horizontal variances of kicks. However, the infants born PT, compared to FT, spent less time in the task-specific region of interest and had a greater non-task-specific horizontal variance throughout the task. This may indicate that infants born PT and FT exhibit similar general spatial exploration, but infants born PT exhibit less task-specific spatial exploration. Future research is necessary to determine the contribution of learning and motor abilities to the differences in task-specific exploration between infants born PT and FT.

Task-dependence in scene perception: Head unrestrained viewing using mobile eye-tracking.

Project description:Real-world scene perception is typically studied in the laboratory using static picture viewing with restrained head position. Consequently, the transfer of results obtained in this paradigm to real-word scenarios has been questioned. The advancement of mobile eye-trackers and the progress in image processing, however, permit a more natural experimental setup that, at the same time, maintains the high experimental control from the standard laboratory setting. We investigated eye movements while participants were standing in front of a projector screen and explored images under four specific task instructions. Eye movements were recorded with a mobile eye-tracking device and raw gaze data were transformed from head-centered into image-centered coordinates. We observed differences between tasks in temporal and spatial eye-movement parameters and found that the bias to fixate images near the center differed between tasks. Our results demonstrate that current mobile eye-tracking technology and a highly controlled design support the study of fine-scaled task dependencies in an experimental setting that permits more natural viewing behavior than the static picture viewing paradigm.

Adapting to Visual Noise Alleviates Visual Snow.

Project description:PurposeVisual snow syndrome-characterized by flickering specks throughout the visual field and accompanied by other symptoms-can disrupt daily life and affects roughly 2% of the population. However, its neural bases remain mysterious, and treatments are lacking. Here, we report the first intervention that can temporarily eliminate the visual snow symptom, allowing many observers to see the world without snow for the first time since symptom onset. Prolonged viewing of a visual stimulus strongly reduces the responsiveness of the visual pathways to subsequent stimuli, and we tested whether such adaptation could affect visual snow.MethodsParticipants with visual snow (total n = 27) viewed high-contrast dynamic noise patterns, resembling television static, and then judged the strength of the symptom.ResultsVisual snow was temporarily reduced in strength to the point that it was invisible at longer adaptation durations for most observers. The effect followed typical trends of adaptation for physical stimuli in normally sighted observers: Effect duration increased monotonically with duration of exposure to the adapter and was specific to dynamic noise.ConclusionsThese results establish that spontaneous neural activity in the visual system is causally related to the visual snow percept. Because they perceive this activity, people with visual snow may provide a unique window into the generation and suppression of noise in the visual system. Adaptation allows reliable experimental control over visual snow, and so is a strong candidate for diagnostic testing and a promising tool for further understanding its neural origins, which could in turn aid the development of treatments.

Head and body structure infants' visual experiences during mobile, naturalistic play.

Project description:Infants' visual experiences are important for learning, and may depend on how information is structured in the visual field. This study examined how objects are distributed in 12-month-old infants' field of view in a mobile play setting. Infants wore a mobile eye tracker that recorded their field of view and eye movements while they freely played with toys and a caregiver. We measured how centered and spread object locations were in infants' field of view, and investigated how infant posture, object looking, and object distance affected the centering and spread. We found that far toys were less centered in infants' field of view while infants were prone compared to when sitting or upright. Overall, toys became more centered in view and less spread in location when infants were looking at toys regardless of posture and toy distance. In sum, this study showed that infants' visual experiences are shaped by the physical relation between infants' bodies and the locations of objects in the world. However, infants are able to compensate for postural and environmental constraints by actively moving their head and eyes when choosing to look at an object.

Effects of color cues on eye-hand coordination training with a mirror drawing task in virtual environment.

Project description:Mirror drawing is a motor learning task that is used to evaluate and improve eye-hand coordination of users and can be implemented in immersive Virtual Reality (VR) Head-Mounted Displays (HMDs) for training purposes. In this paper, we investigated the effect of color cues on user motor performance in a mirror-drawing task between Virtual Environment (VE) and Real World (RW), with three different colors. We conducted a 5-day user study with twelve participants. The results showed that the participants made fewer errors in RW compared to VR, except for pre-training, which indicated that hardware and software limitations have detrimental effects on the motor learning of the participants across different realities. Furthermore, participants made fewer errors with the colors close to green, which is usually associated with serenity, contentment, and relaxation. According to our findings, VR headsets can be used to evaluate participants' eye-hand coordination in mirror drawing tasks to evaluate the motor-learning of participants. VE and RW training applications could benefit from our findings in order to enhance their effectiveness.

HAVEN: Haptic And Visual Environment Navigation by a Shape-Changing Mobile Robot with Multimodal Perception.

Project description:Many animals exhibit agile mobility in obstructed environments due to their ability to tune their bodies to negotiate and manipulate obstacles and apertures. Most mobile robots are rigid structures and avoid obstacles where possible. In this work, we introduce a new framework named Haptic And Visual Environment Navigation (HAVEN) Architecture to combine vision and proprioception for a deformable mobile robot to be more agile in obstructed environments. The algorithms enable the robot to be autonomously (a) predictive by analysing visual feedback from the environment and preparing its body accordingly, (b) reactive by responding to proprioceptive feedback, and (c) active by manipulating obstacles and gap sizes using its deformable body. The robot was tested approaching differently sized apertures in obstructed environments ranging from greater than its shape to smaller than its narrowest possible size. The experiments involved multiple obstacles with different physical properties. The results show higher navigation success rates and an average 32% navigation time reduction when the robot actively manipulates obstacles using its shape-changing body.
