Ionothermal Synthesis of Sulfidobismuth spiro-Dicubane Cations.

ABSTRACT: Bi₂ S₃ was dissolved in the presence of NaCl in the ionic liquid [BMIm]Cl ⋅ 4AlCl₃ (BMIm=1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) through annealing the mixture at 180 °C. Upon cooling to room temperature, orange, air-sensitive crystals of Na(Bi₇ S₈ )[S(AlCl₃ )₃ ]₂ [AlCl₄ ]₂ (1) precipitated. X-ray diffraction on single-crystals of 1 revealed a triclinic crystal structure that contains (Bi₇ S₈ )⁵⁺ spiro-dicubanes, [S(AlCl₃ )₃ ]^2- tetrahedra triples, isolated [AlCl₄ ]^- tetrahedra, and sodium cations.

Ionothermal Synthesis of Imide-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an extensively studied class of porous materials, which distinguish themselves from other porous polymers in their crystallinity and high degree of modularity, enabling a wide range of applications. COFs are most commonly synthesized solvothermally, which is often a time-consuming process and restricted to well-soluble precursor molecules. Synthesis of polyimide-linked COFs (PI-COFs) is further complicated by the poor reversibility of the ring-closing reaction under solvothermal conditions. Herein, we report the ionothermal synthesis of crystalline and porous PI-COFs in zinc chloride and eutectic salt mixtures. This synthesis does not require soluble precursors and the reaction time is significantly reduced as compared to standard solvothermal synthesis methods. In addition to applying the synthesis to previously reported imide COFs, a new perylene-based COF was also synthesized, which could not be obtained by the classical solvothermal route. In situ high-temperature XRPD analysis hints to the formation of precursor-salt adducts as crystalline intermediates, which then react with each other to form the COF.

Ionothermal Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks Using Low-Melting Metal Salt Precursors.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous, crystalline materials constructed from organic linkers and inorganic nodes with myriad potential applications in chemical separations, catalysis, and drug delivery. A major barrier to the application of MOFs is their poor scalability, as most frameworks are prepared under highly dilute solvothermal conditions using toxic organic solvents. Herein, we demonstrate that combining a range of linkers with low-melting metal halide (hydrate) salts leads directly to high-quality MOFs without added solvent. Frameworks prepared under these ionothermal conditions possess porosities comparable to those prepared under traditional solvothermal conditions. In addition, we report the ionothermal syntheses of two frameworks that cannot be prepared directly under solvothermal conditions. Overall, the user-friendly method reported herein should be broadly applicable to the discovery and synthesis of stable metal-organic materials.

Ionothermal Synthesis of Cadmium Coordination Polymers: Ionic Liquid Effects on the Synthesis, Structural, and Thermal Characterization.

Project description:Ionothermal synthesis is a little used method for the preparation of coordination polymers. By this method, two cadmium compounds were synthesized, 1, with formula Cd3(ox)F2(Ina)2 (Ina = isonicotinate) and 2, Cd(NO3)2(4,4'-Bpy) (4,4'-Bpy = 4,4'-Bipyridine). The modification of the reaction conditions has allowed to obtain 2 as a pure phase. The structure of both compounds was determined by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 is isostructural to the previously reported Cd2Zn(ox)(OH)2(Ina)2. It crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n and present a three-dimensional (3D) network, built-up from [Cd3(ox)F2]n2n+ layers, linked by isonicotinate ligands. Crystals of 2 are formed by twins of two components which are rotated ca. 180° to each other. This compound crystallizes in the triclinic P-1 space group and its structure can be describe as a two-dimensional (2D) 4 connected 'sql' net. The layers are composed by [Cd(NO3)2]n chains linked through 4,4'-Bpy ligands, and are pillared along the [011] direction. The thermal decomposition of 2 was studied by thermogravimetric and thermodiffractiometric techniques. The compound decomposes gradually starting from 160 °C, and due to heating, the structure suffers slight reversible changes in the bond distances and angles.

Synthesis of spiro-fused pyrazolidoylisoxazolines.

Project description:Routes to structurally unique spiro-fused pyrazolidoylisoxazolines are reported. These methods start with monosubstituted hydrazines or hydrazides and utilize the nitrile oxide 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction to generate the targeted spiro-fused bis-heterocycles. Molecular shape space diversity analyses were performed on these pyrazolidoylisoxazolines showing that manipulation of the appended R groups significantly changes the molecular shape.

Size Effects of the Anions in the Ionothermal Synthesis of Carbon Nitride Materials.

Project description:Semiconducting carbon nitride polymers are used in metal-free photocatalysts and in opto-electronic devices. Conventionally, they are obtained using thermal and ionothermal syntheses in inscrutable, closed systems and therefore, their condensation behavior is poorly understood. Here, the synthetic protocols and properties are compared for two types of carbon nitride materials - 2D layered poly(triazine imide) (PTI) and hydrogen-bonded melem hydrate - obtained from three low-melting salt eutectics taken from the systematic series of the alkali metal halides: LiCl/KCl, LiBr/KBr, and LiI/KI. The size of the anion plays a significant role in the formation process of the condensed carbon nitride polymers, and it suggests a strong templating effect. The smaller anions (chloride and bromide) become incorporated into triazine (C3 N3 )-based PTI frameworks. The larger iodide does not stabilize the formation of a triazine-based polymer, but instead it leads to the formation of the heptazine (C6 N7 )-based hydrogen-bonded melem hydrate as the main crystalline phase. Melem hydrate, obtained as single-crystalline powders, was compared with PTI in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water and in an OLED device. Further, the emergence of each carbon nitride species from its corresponding salt eutectic was rationalized via density functional theory calculations. This study highlights the possibilities to further tailor the properties of eutectic salt melts for ionothermal synthesis of organic functional materials.

Ionothermal synthesis of activated carbon from waste PET bottles as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles have become a significant post-consumer plastic waste with attendant environmental problems. Hence, ionothermal synthesis has been used to prepare activated carbon (AC) anode materials from waste PET for both high performance and sustainable lithium-ion batteries (LIB). Particularly, using choline chloride deep eutectic salts (CU-DES) does not require post-synthesis washing and thereby reduces the complexity of the process and produces materials with unique low-surface area, higher levels of graphitization/ordering, and high nitrogen doping in the obtained ACs. The results show that the AC produced using CU-DES (PET-CU-A-ITP2) gave good electrochemical performance. Even though the material possesses a low surface area (∼23 m2 g-1), it displays a gravimetric capacity (GC) of ∼460 mA h g-1 and a coulombic efficiency (CE) of ∼53% in the 1st cycle and very good cycling performance with a capacity retention of 98% from the 2nd to the 100th cycle. The superior electrochemical performance of the PET-CU-A-ITP2 anode was found to be due to its better graphitization/ordering and dense structure which results in higher capacity, formation of less solid electrolyte interphase, and higher CE. These results show that dense carbons can be exploited as high-performance anodes in LIBs. Also, this research presents both a pathway for waste PET management and a waste-energy approach that could offer cheaper and greener LIBs to meet the sustainable development goals.

Ionothermal Synthesis of Crystalline Nanoporous Silicon and Its Use as Anode Materials in Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Silicon has great potential as an anode material for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This work reports a facile, high-yield, and scalable approach to prepare nanoporous silicon, in which commercial magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) reacted with the acidic ionic liquid at 100 °C and ambient pressure. The obtained silicon consists of a crystalline, porous structure with a BET surface area of 450 m2/g and pore size of 1.27 nm. When coated with the nitrogen-doped carbon layer and applied as LIB anode, the obtained nanoporous silicon-carbon composites exhibit a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 72.9% and possess a specific capacity of 1000 mA h g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 100 cycles. This preparation method does not involve high temperature and pressure vessels and can be easily applied for mass production of nanoporous silicon materials for lithium-ion battery or for other applications.

Bis-Spiro-Oxetane and Bis-Spiro-Tetrahydrofuran Pyrroline Nitroxide Radicals: Synthesis and Electron Spin Relaxation Studies.

Project description:Synthesis of bis-spiro-oxetane and bis-spiro-tetrahydrofuran pyrroline nitroxide radicals relies on the Mitsunobu reaction-mediated double cyclizations of N-Boc protected pyrroline tetraols. Structures of the nitroxide radicals are supported by X-ray crystallography. In a trehalose/sucrose matrix at room temperature, the bis-spiro-oxetane nitroxide radical possesses electron spin coherence time, Tm ≈ 0.7 μs. The observed enhanced Tm is most likely associated with strong hydrogen bonding of oxetane moieties to the trehalose/sucrose matrix.

Attempted synthesis of ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium cations.

Project description:With the synthesis of ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium cations as an objective, we generated (2-lithiophenyl)diphenylphosphine and (2-lithiophenyl)di-isopropylphosphine and allowed these organolithium reagents to react with benzophenone. The resulting phosphino-triarylcarbinols were allowed to react with HBF4 in the presence of trifluoroacetic anhydride in order to generate the corresponding cations. Instead of the targeted ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium, the cations formed in these reactions were identified as the four-membered phosphonium species 7,7-bis(phenyl)-8,8-bis(phenyl)-7-phosphoniabicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-triene (3+) and 7,7-bis(phenyl)-8,8-bis(isopropyl)-7-phosphoniabicyclo[4.2.0]octa-1,3,5-triene (4+), which were both isolated as tetrafluoroborate salts. The structure of these compounds has been confirmed by X-ray analysis. These new cations are thermally unstable and isomerize into the corresponding 5,10-dihydro-5,5-diphenyl-10-phenyl-acridophosphinium (5+) and 5,10-dihydro-5,5-di(isopropyl)-10-phenyl-acridophosphinium (6+) as tetrafluoroborate salts. These reactions suggest the involvement of ortho-phenylene phosphino-tritylium cations, which would be obtained by dissociation of the R3P+-CAr3 bonds in 4+ and 5+This article is part of the themed issue 'Frustrated Lewis pair chemistry'.
