Natural transformation is a mechanism by which a particular bacterial species takes up foreign DNA and integrates it into its genome. The swine pathogen <i>Glaesserella parasuis</i> (<i>G. parasuis</i>) is a naturally transformable bacterium. The regulation of competence, however, is not fully understood.
