Project description:IntroductionEnhancing interprofessional education (IPE) fosters collaborative efforts among healthcare professionals specializing in musculoskeletal (MSK) care. This approach presents a valuable opportunity to address the pressing MSK disease burden in developing countries, with high prevalence rates and limited resources. While an abundance of literature on the various elements of IPE among healthcare students and professionals exists, shared contexts of practice of South African MSK disciplines are not currently developed through IPE at higher education level, establishing a need for South African formalised curricular IPE interventions with an explicit focus on undergraduate students of MSK healthcare professions.Methods and analysisThe intended scoping review protocol is guided by the framework set out by Arksey and O'Malley, where the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews will guide the process of reporting. English sources (qualitative and quantitative methodological studies, conference papers and proceedings, systematic reviews, grey literature, unpublished materials, theses and dissertations) from the electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, ERIC and ProQuest with no date restriction will be included. A researcher, an independent reviewer and research librarian will search and extract data from abstracts and full texts for this scoping review, where any arising disagreements will be resolved by discussion. Reference lists of relevant literature will be scrutinised. Relevant literature will be recorded on a referencing software and deduplicated. The data collection will take place between May and October 2023. The findings will be reported narratively with the use of tables.Ethics and disseminationThis scoping review does not require ethical approval as all literature used already exists in the public domain with no involvement of human participants. The findings from this planned review will be submitted to peer-reviewed journals and will be presented at higher education conferences. This scoping review protocol was registered on Open Science Framework with the registration osf.io/c27n4.
Project description:ObjectiveTo examine peer-reviewed literature involving undergraduate interprofessional education (IPE) focusing on musculoskeletal (MSK) healthcare professions.MethodsMethodological searches were conducted on electronic databases PubMed, Scopus, ERIC, and ProQuest. No date restrictions were applied. English sources (qualitative and quantitative methodological studies, conference papers and proceedings, systematic reviews, grey literature, unpublished materials, theses, and dissertations) were included. A researcher, independent reviewer, and research librarian completed the search and data extraction from June to October 2023. Disagreements were resolved by discussion. ATLAS.ti was used to analyze data by generating codes linked to the text. Findings were reported in a narrative format and by using tables.ResultsInitially, 2894 articles were retrieved and screened for relevance. After rigorous screening procedures, 18 articles from various countries were deemed eligible for inclusion. The included studies were conducted within the date range of 2010 to 2024. The included studies employed mixed methods (n = 9), quantitative (n = 5), and qualitative (n = 4) approaches. Combined medical and physiotherapy student cohorts were prominently featured in 67% (n = 12) of the reviewed studies. All 18 studies incorporated the implementation and/or evaluation of an IPE intervention. Thematic analysis revealed 5 overarching themes, encompassing the benefits, barriers, interventions, strategies, evaluation, and general findings related to IPE.ConclusionThe reviewed literature emphasizes a significant gap in IPE initiatives concerning various MSK health providers, including chiropractors, podiatrists, biokineticists, and osteopaths. This paucity accentuates the need for further exploration and evaluation of IPE within MSK-specific contexts, crucial for addressing and mitigating the escalating global burden of MSK diseases.
Project description:BackgroundPrimary healthcare in Sweden and worldwide has a diverse structure with many kinds of healthcare units involved. This is a challenge for collaboration between different professions in primary healthcare, as the different healthcare professions often work in silos. Interprofessional education (IPE) in the context of primary healthcare is less studied than IPE at hospitals and most of the studies in primary healthcare have focused on collaboration between general practitioners and nurses. The aim of this study was to describe how healthcare students perceived conditions for IPE in primary healthcare.MethodsQualitative group interviews were used and a total of 26 students, recruited on a voluntary basis participated in four group interviews with students mixed from study programmes in nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and medicine. Students from the study programme in medicine were in their second to eleventh semesters of 11 semesters in total, whilst students from the occupational therapist, physiotherapist and nursing programmes were in their fourth to sixth of six semesters in total.ResultsOur findings indicated one theme: Students perceived a need for support and awareness of IPE from both study programmes and clinical placements. Five categories were found to belong to the theme. Students' tunnel-vision focus on their own profession may have affected their ability to collaborate with students from other professions. The nature of the patients' healthcare problems decided if they were perceived as suitable for IPE. Clinical supervisors' support for and attitude towards IPE were important. The hierarchy between different professions was perceived as a hindrance for seeking help from the other professions. The students asked for more collaboration between different study programmes, in order to gain knowledge about the roles and responsibilities of the other professions.ConclusionsIn conclusion, students in this study considered it essential for different study programmes and clinical placements to be more aware of the opportunities for and importance of IPE. The study identified conditions that were required for IPE in primary healthcare that may be helpful for healthcare teachers and clinical supervisors to better understand how students perceive IPE in primary healthcare, thus facilitating the planning of IPE.
Project description:BackgroundIntegration of clinical medicine and other subjects has laid more emphasis on the cultivation of high-quality medical talents, with the increasing demand for interprofessional education (IPE). IPE has been promoted by a number of universities to create and sustain authentic IPE activities, with which students can engage. Although IPE has achieved certain results, there are still many problems. Many studies focused on the perspective of educators without understanding the essential needs and experience of students. This study intends to focus on the implementation of IPE from the perspective of medical students.PurposeTo describe the interprofessional experiences of medical students and provide a reference for the development of interprofessional education programs for medical students.MethodsA descriptive qualitative study was conducted in 2023, using purposive sampling to select medical students who had interprofessional learning experiences for semi-structured interviews. The study used a phenomenological approach and Colaizzi's phenomenological method for analyzing and summarizing the interprofessional experiences and perceptions to extract themes.ResultsThe interprofessional experiences of medical students were distilled into five themes: "cognition and attitude", "practice and collaboration", "motivation and drive", "difficulty and challenge", and "expectation and vision". Students reported their experience and found interprofessional learning beneficial for broadening their horizon and building harmonious healthcare teams. Based on the experience of interprofessional learning, students also put forward expectations and ideas for IPE especially for medical students.ConclusionEach institution should establish a complete interprofessional education system in accordance with the professional education system of students, to achieve interprofessional education for medical students that adapts to the national conditions of China, and to better improve the overall quality of future medical service teams, to achieve patient-centered high-quality care experience.Trial registrationNot applicable.
Project description:Interprofessional identity development is an emerging area of research. Whilst there is a growing body of studies exploring interprofessional identity development and interprofessional education, little is known about interprofessional identity development in healthcare professionals and the impact of interprofessional identity on practice. This study explored interprofessional identity development in graduates during their first year of work as health professionals and the influence of this on practice. All graduates had prior interprofessional education as students. Fourteen interviews with eight graduates were conducted. Data was analysed cross-sectionally using inductive thematic analysis. Three inter-related themes were developed: 'growing confidence,' 'commitment to client-centred care,' and 'maintaining dual identification in different contexts.' These themes demonstrated that, first, interprofessional identity development occurred along a continuum influenced by the practice context and the individual's commitment to client-centred care. Second, confidence identifying and practising as a healthcare professional facilitates further interprofessional identity development. Third, maintaining identification as an interprofessional practitioner involves developing an increasingly sophisticated understanding of interprofessional practice by viewing interprofessional identity through increasingly complex meaning-making lenses consistent with the constructive developmental theory of self. Findings support the inclusion of pre-licensure interprofessional education and inform further interprofessional identity research in professionals beyond their first year of practice.
Project description:Learning and working together towards better health outcomes today have become more complex requiring an investigation on how interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaboration (IPC) practices could be sustained and further developed. Through a sociomaterial perspective, we can better understand IPE and IPC practices by foregrounding the material aspect of learning and working together and examining its relationship with humans and their interactions. This article aimed to examine existing literature that discusses the application of sociomaterial perspectives in IPE and IPC. A scoping review was conducted following Arksey and O'Malley's framework to explore the extent within the current body of knowledge that discuss how sociomaterial perspective is applied in IPE and IPC practices. A systematic database search was performed in September 2021 to retrieve literature published from 2007 onwards, with forty-three papers meeting the inclusion criteria. These papers included research articles, book chapters, conference papers and commentaries, with the majority originating from Europe. The thematic analysis revealed the following themes: (1) power as a sociomaterial entity shaping IPE and IPC; (2) inclusion of non-health professionals in reimagining IPE and IPC practices, and (3) the critical understanding of sociomateriality. The findings suggest that a sociomaterial perspective can allow for the reimagination of the contemporary and future practices of interprofessionalism.
Project description:BackgroundPatient safety incidents, such as adverse events and medical errors, are often caused by ineffective communication and collaboration. Interprofessional education is an effective method for promoting collaborative competencies and has attracted great attention in the context of patient safety. However, the effectiveness of interprofessional education interventions on patient safety remains unclear. This scoping review aimed to synthesize existing studies that focused on improving patient safety through interprofessional education interventions for healthcare professionals.MethodsSix databases, including Medline (via PubMed), Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL (via EBSCO), Scopus and Web of Science, were last searched on 20 December 2023. The search records were independently screened by two researchers. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool for Quasi-Experimental Studies was used for quality appraisal. The data were extracted by two researchers and cross-checked. Finally, a narrative synthesis was performed. The protocol for this scoping review was not registered.ResultsThirteen quasi-experimental studies with moderate methodological quality were included. The results revealed that the characteristics of current interprofessional education interventions were diverse, with a strong interest in simulation-based learning strategies and face-to-face delivery methods. Several studies did not assess the reduction in patient safety incidents involving adverse events or medical errors, relying instead on the improvements in healthcare professionals' knowledge, attitude or practice related to patient safety issues. Less than half of the studies examined team performance, based primarily on the self-evaluation of healthcare professionals and observer-based evaluation. There is a gap in applying newer tools such as peer evaluation and team-based objective structured clinical evaluation.ConclusionAdditional evidence on interprofessional education interventions for improving patient safety is needed by further research, especially randomized controlled trials. Facilitating simulation-based interprofessional education, collecting more objective outcomes of patient safety and selecting suitable tools to evaluate teamwork performance may be the focus of future studies.
Project description:IntroductionHealthcare systems require healthcare professionals and students educated in an interprofessional (IP) context. Well-designed assessments are needed to evaluate whether students have developed IP competencies, but we currently lack evidence-informed guidelines to create them. This study aims to provide guidelines for the assessment of IP competencies in healthcare education.MethodsA qualitative consensus study was conducted to establish guidelines for the design of IP assessments using the nominal group technique. First, five expert groups (IP experts, patients, educational scientists, teachers, and students) were asked to discuss design guidelines for IP assessment and reach intra-group consensus. Second, one heterogeneous inter-group meeting was organized to reach a consensus among the expert groups on IP assessment guidelines.ResultsThis study yielded a comprehensive set of 26 guidelines to help design performance assessments for IP education: ten guidelines for both the IP assessment tasks and the IP assessors and six guidelines for the IP assessment procedures.DiscussionThe results showed that IP assessment is complex and, compared to mono-professional assessment, high-quality IP assessments require additional elements such as multiple IP products and processes to be assessed, an IP pool of assessors, and assessment procedures in which standards are included for the IP collaboration process as well as individual contributions. The guidelines are based on expert knowledge and experience, but an important next step is to test these design guidelines in educational practice.
Project description:IntroductionInterprofessional education is a process designed to facilitate knowledge exchange between healthcare professionals with the aim of improving learning, collaboration, and patient care. It helsps students gain a better understanding of communication, teamwork, and each profession's role. This study aims to examine Saudi undergraduate nursing students' attitudes and readiness for engagement in high-fidelity simulation interprofessional education and practice after training nurse educators in HFS.MethodologyA descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 311 nursing students. The process of sampling was done by convenience and was not probabilistic. Participants were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire. The survey included demographic information as well as the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale.ResultsThere was a positive attitude toward Interprofessional education among nursing students and a reasonable level of readiness. The Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale score was significantly associated with academic years (p ≤ 0.05).ConclusionNursing students have a positive attitude towards interprofessional education and are willing to engage in high-fidelity simulation activities. The integration of high-fidelity simulation in interprofessional education can significantly benefit nursing students by enhancing their clinical skills, decision-making abilities, and teamwork dynamics in a controlled environment.
Project description:IntroductionTelehealth is a growing topic, with potential to improve access to primary healthcare. However, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how telehealth could facilitate interprofessional collaboration that is recommended to strengthen the comprehensive approach of primary healthcare. The objective is to identify the characteristics and applications of telehealth services related to the interprofessional collaborative practice of primary healthcare professionals.Methods and analysisThis review will cover studies including as target population those health professionals who work in telehealth services; as concept, telehealth in relation to collaborative interprofessional practice; and as context, primary healthcare. A scoping review will be carried out according to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Databases to be searched include MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, Eric, Scopus, LILACS and Web of Science. All identified records will be grouped, duplicates will be removed, titles and abstracts will be selected by two independent reviewers, and the full text of selected articles will be evaluated in detail. A data extraction tool developed by the reviewers will be used for data extraction. The results will be presented in data map format in a logical way, in a diagram or in a tabular format, accompanied by a descriptive summary.Ethics and disseminationNo ethical approval is required for this study. A manuscript based on this scoping review will be submitted to a journal and we hope it will contribute to scientific knowledge on the interprofessional field and key research findings will be sent to key events on interprofessional practice and education.Systematic review registrationThis scoping review was registered in the Open Science Framework (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/2BV8D).
