Project description:Simulation studies are a powerful and important tool in epidemiologic teaching, especially for understanding causal inference. Simulations using the sufficient component cause framework can provide students key insights about causal mechanisms and sources of bias, but are not commonly used. To make them more accessible, we aim to provide an introduction and tutorial on developing and using these simulations, including an overview of translation from directed acyclic graphs and potential outcomes to sufficient component causal models, and a summary of the simulation approach. Using the applied question of the impact of educational attainment on dementia, we offer simple simulation examples and accompanying code to illustrate sufficient component cause-based simulations for four common causal structures (causation, confounding, selection bias, and effect modification) often introduced early in epidemiologic training. We show how sufficient component cause-based simulations illuminate both the causal processes and the mechanisms through which bias occurs, which can help enhance student understanding of these causal structures and the distinctions between them. We conclude with a discussion of considerations for using sufficient component cause-based simulations as a teaching tool.

Project description:In recent times, characterized by the rapid advancement of science and technology, the educational system has continuously evolved. Within this modern educational landscape, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education has emerged as a prominent pedagogical paradigm, gaining substantial popularity in college-level instruction and capturing widespread societal attention. Notably, the cultivation of audio-visual aesthetic proficiency occupies a central role within this educational approach, prioritizing the enhancement of aesthetic sensibilities. By ingeniously amalgamating scientific knowledge with emotional expression, this research assumes a crucial facet in the holistic development of individuals. The research aims to explore the cultivation of students' audio-visual aesthetic abilities in university-level vocal music education by integrating deep learning and STEAM education principles. Drawing upon an extensive review of relevant literature, this research synthesizes the principles of STEAM education with those of deep learning, while considering the current cultural and societal context and the distinct realities faced by contemporary college students. Consequently, this research posits a novel conceptual framework for curriculum design and proposes a three-stage teaching process model. To substantiate the efficacy of this innovative educational model, an empirical investigation employing a questionnaire survey is conducted to assess its teaching effectiveness, confirming the marked superiority of this pioneering pedagogical approach. The results demonstrate that the new teaching model has led to notable enhancements in students' audio-visual aesthetic abilities, self-confidence in learning, and learning efficiency. Additionally, compared to traditional educational methods, the curriculum primarily, which focused on STEAM education with the project as its core, emphasizes the logic of the learning process and its connection with other disciplines. In conclusion, the three-stage educational model combining STEAM education and deep learning fully considers students' learning situations and utilizes the analytical capabilities of computers for educational purposes. This learner-centric approach significantly augments teaching efficiency and flexibility. Finally, the research concludes by summarizing its contributions and limitations, offering practical recommendations for the field. This research provides new insights and references for the practice and improvement of audio-visual aesthetic education in higher education institutions.

Project description:As undergraduate biology curricula increasingly aim to provide students with access to courses and experiences that engage them in the practices of science, tools are needed for instruction, evaluation, and research around student learning. One of the important skills for undergraduate biology students to master is the selection and creation of appropriate graphs to summarize data they acquire through investigations in their course work and research experiences. Graphing is a complex skill, and there are few, discipline-informed tools available for instructors, students, and researchers to use. Here, we describe the development of a graph rubric informed by literature from the learning sciences, statistics, representations literature, and feedback and use of the rubric by a variety of users. The result is an evidence-based, analytic rubric that consists of categories essential for graph choice and construction: graph mechanics, graph communication, and graph choice. Each category of the rubric can be evaluated at three levels of achievement. Our analysis demonstrates the potential for the rubric to provide formative feedback to students and allow instructors to gauge and guide learning and instruction. We further discuss and identify potentially interesting research targets for science education researchers.

Project description:Background and aimConcept maps hold great potential for the students as it helps in the formulation of new concepts as well to evaluate the learning ability of the students. However, the use of concept maps as a teaching tool in medical students in India has not been explored, to the best of our knowledge. This study was conducted to assess the use of concept maps in improving learning among medical students.Materials and methodsThis study was conducted among III MBBS students belonging to two batches. This study was carried out in two stages. In first stage, pretest was taken to test the knowledge of students. Later, introductory class was taken on tuberculosis and concept map was used to explain the given concept and later posttest was taken. In second stage, feedback was taken from the students regarding the concept map. Pre- and post-test results were compared using Wilcoxon test.ResultsSignificant difference between pretest (4 ± 1.593) and posttest (10 ± 0.762) score was seen (P < 0.0001). More than 50% of students scored full marks in posttest, whereas no one got full marks in the pretest. Positive response (82.09%) was received from the students when feedback was taken regarding the use of concept map.ConclusionConcept maps are found to be an effective teaching and learning tool for medical students. They can be used to enhance meaningful learning in students and can be practiced more in the students for better understandings of the concepts.

Project description:IntroductionPatient handoffs, the communications required for the safe transfer of patient care, are known to be a common source of medical errors. Simulation exercises are effective techniques for teaching the procedures and patient interaction skills involved in a handoff. We developed a teaching tool that allows students to individually interact with a simulated patient, develop a treatment plan, and practice a handoff to another provider.MethodsThe curriculum is a flexible instructional tool to teach patient handoffs in the context of a simulated obstetric emergency for learners at the clerkship through first-year obstetrics and gynecology resident levels. The curriculum secondarily teaches management of first-trimester bleeding with acute blood loss and can be adapted to allow advanced learners to practice obtaining informed consent. To evaluate this simulation for educational effectiveness, we developed a faculty observation assessment tool.ResultsThe simulation assessments for history taking, fund of knowledge, and interpersonal skills were predictive of subsequent clerkship clinical grades. Eighty percent of students agreed the exercise was realistic, 95% agreed it was relevant to the clinical curriculum, 90% agreed the simulation taught handoff skills, and 73% agreed the simulation increased confidence in handoff skills. Students uniformly found the curriculum to be relevant, realistic, and effective at teaching handoff skills.DiscussionUse of this curriculum has the potential to improve students' communication skills, handoff performance, and confidence during an obstetrics and gynecology clerkship. The assessment tool may allow early identification of students in need of improvement in communication skills.

Project description:OBJECTIVE: To describe the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare's (AACH) Faculty Development Course on Teaching the Medical Interview and report a single year's outcomes. DESIGN: We delivered a Faculty Development course on Teaching the Medical Interview whose theme was relationship-centered care to a national and international audience in 1999. Participants completed a retrospective pre-post assessment of their perceived confidence in performing interview, clinical, teaching, and self-awareness skills. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A total of 79 participants in the 17th annual AACH national faculty development course at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in June 1999. INTERVENTION: A 5-day course utilized the principles of learner-centered learning to teach a national and international cohort of medical school faculty about teaching the medical interview. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The course fostered individualized, self-directed learning for participants, under the guidance of AACH faculty. Teaching methods included a plenary session, small groups, workshops, and project groups all designed to aid in the achievement of individual learning goals. Course outcomes of retrospective self-assessed confidence in interview, clinical, teaching, self-awareness, and control variables were measured using a 7-point Likert scale. Participants reported improved confidence in interview, clinical, teaching, and self-awareness variables. After controlling for desirability bias as measured by control variables, only teaching and self-awareness mean change scores were statistically significant (p < .001). CONCLUSIONS: The AACH Faculty Development course on Teaching the Medical Interview utilized learner-centered teaching methods important to insure learning with experienced course participants. Perceived teaching and self-awareness skills changed the most when compared to other skills.

Project description:IntroductionTeaching and learning patient safety require demonstration of competencies such as teamwork, communication skills, and recognition of systems error. This patient safety TBL simulation-training program was developed to fulfill core patient safety objectives outlined by the ACGME and ACGME Clinical Learning Environment Review Program. The goal of the program is to enhance patient safety and quality care concepts and facilitate hands-on teamwork skills and core attitudes towards patient safety. This program served as a mandatory part of the residency core curriculum.MethodsIt was delivered as a 3-hour workshop session during medicine resident orientation. The workshop included an introductory presentation, one TBL activity, and three 1-hour interprofessional simulated application cases using either high-fidelity mannequins or standardized patients. Following each application case activity, trainees participated in a postcase scenario debriefing moderated by faculty facilitators.ResultsA total of 76 trainees participated, and 20 interprofessional teams were created. An independent-samples t test revealed that the Group Readiness Assurance Test scores were significantly higher than the Individual Readiness Assurance Test scores. Although the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Survey's Teamwork and Professional Identity subscale scores were higher postworkshop compared to preworkshop, the differences were not statistically significant. Over 90% of the participants agreed that the safety concepts they learned would likely improve the quality of care they provide to future patients.DiscussionA simulation model centered on an interprofessional team can be used as an important training technique to teach health care professionals realistic, hands-on principles of patient safety.

Project description:The gut microbiome and its physiological impacts on human and animal health is an area of research emphasis. Microbes themselves are invisible and may therefore be abstract and challenging to understand. It is therefore important to infuse this topic into undergraduate curricula, including Anatomy and Physiology courses, ideally through an active learning approach. To accomplish this, we developed a novel tactile teaching tool with guided-inquiry (TTT-GI) activity where students explored how the gut microbiome ferments carbohydrates to produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs). This activity was implemented in two sections of a large-enrollment Human Anatomy and Physiology course at a research intensive (R1) university in the Spring of 2022 that was taught using a hyflex format. Students who attended class in person used commonly available building toys to assemble representative carbohydrates of varying structural complexity, whereas students who attended class virtually made these carbohydrate structures using a digital learning tool. Students then predicted how microbes within the gut would ferment different carbohydrates into SCFAs, as well as the physiological implications of the SCFAs. We assessed this activity to address three research questions, with 182 students comprising our sample. First, we evaluated if the activity learning objectives were achieved through implementation of a pre-and post-assessment schema. Our results revealed that all three learning objectives of this activity were attained. Next, we evaluated if the format in which this TTT-GI activity was implemented impacted student learning. While we found minimal and nonsignificant differences in student learning between those who attended in-person and those who attended remotely, we did find significant differences between the two course sections, which differed in length and spacing of the activity. Finally, we evaluated if this TTT-GI approach was impactful for diverse students. We observed modest and nonsignificant positive learning gains for some populations of students traditionally underrepresented in STEM (first-generation students and students with one or more disabilities). That said, we found that the greatest learning gains associated with this TTT-GI activity were observed in students who had taken previous upper-level biology coursework.

Project description:ObjectivesTo assess advanced communication skills among second-year medical students exposed either to a computer simulation (MPathic-VR) featuring virtual humans, or to a multimedia computer-based learning module, and to understand each group's experiences and learning preferences.MethodsA single-blinded, mixed methods, randomized, multisite trial compared MPathic-VR (N=210) to computer-based learning (N=211). Primary outcomes: communication scores during repeat interactions with MPathic-VR's intercultural and interprofessional communication scenarios and scores on a subsequent advanced communication skills objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). Multivariate analysis of variance was used to compare outcomes.Secondary outcomesstudent attitude surveys and qualitative assessments of their experiences with MPathic-VR or computer-based learning.ResultsMPathic-VR-trained students improved their intercultural and interprofessional communication performance between their first and second interactions with each scenario. They also achieved significantly higher composite scores on the OSCE than computer-based learning-trained students. Attitudes and experiences were more positive among students trained with MPathic-VR, who valued its providing immediate feedback, teaching nonverbal communication skills, and preparing them for emotion-charged patient encounters.ConclusionsMPathic-VR was effective in training advanced communication skills and in enabling knowledge transfer into a more realistic clinical situation.Practice implicationsMPathic-VR's virtual human simulation offers an effective and engaging means of advanced communication training.

Project description:BackgroundStudent training requires specific laboratories for vaccination practice, which are usually limited, and even professionals' continuing education regularly lacks proper care. Thus, new methodologies, concepts, and technologies, such as software-based simulations, are in highly demand.ObjectiveThis work aims to develop a 3D virtual environment to support teaching activities in the vaccination room. The software-based simulation must contribute positively to teaching considering a variable set of scenarios.MethodsWe applied the design science research method to guide the work. First, the concepts and opportunities were raised, which we used to build the simulation (ie, the proposed technological artifact). The development was assisted by a specialist, in which we sought to create a vaccination room according to Brazilian standards. The artifact evaluation was achieved in 2 stages: (1) an evaluation to validate the design with experts through the Delphi method; and (2) a field evaluation with nursing students to validate aspects of usability (System Usability Scale [SUS]) and technology acceptance and use (Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology version 2).ResultsWe built the simulation software using the Unity game engine. An additional module was also developed to create simulation scenarios and view the students' performance reports. The design evaluation showed that the proposed solution is adequate. Students' evaluations confirm good usability (SUS score of 81.4), besides highlighting Performance Expectation as the most positively influential factor of Behavioral Intention. Effort Expectancy is positively affected by younger users. Both evaluation audiences cited the high relevance of the proposed artifact for teaching. Points for improvement are also reported.ConclusionsThe research accomplished its goal of creating a software-based simulation to support teaching scenarios in the vaccination room. The evaluations still reveal desirable improvements and user behavior toward this kind of technological artifact.
