Serum selenium levels and asthma among seafood processing workers in Greenland.

ABSTRACT: Selenium levels in the Inuit population of Greenland have been declining during the last decades. The association between Selenium and asthma has been investigated previously, but with conflicting results. The objective was to measure human serum Se (s-Se) in Greenlandic seafood processing workers, to compare with levels recorded in previous decades and to establish if s-Se is associated with asthma or lung function. Data, including questionnaire answers, spirometry, skin-prick test and s-Se from 324 seafood processing workers in Greenland were collected during 2016-2017. Mean s-Se values were compared by t-test and one-way ANOVA. Associations between s-Se and asthma, symptoms from the lower airways at work and lung function were assessed using linear regression. The mean s-Se was 96.2 µg/L. S-Se was higher among non-smokers and workers living in settlements. Workers with asthma did not have s-Se levels significantly different from those of non-asthmatics. We found a positive association between s-Se levels and FEV₁ values. Selenium levels appear to continue declining in Greenland, presumably because of a more Westernised lifestyle. The health effects of declining Selenium levels remain unclear. We did not establish an association between s-Se and asthma, but we did record a positive association between s-Se and FEV₁.

Project description:ObjectivesThe processing of seafood (fish and shellfish) for human consumption can lead to health consequences, including occupational asthma (OA). Several non-UK studies have reported both respiratory outcomes and airborne levels of major allergens in seafood processing. However, there is a paucity of such evidence in the UK land-based seafood processing sector, which employs some 20 000 workers.MethodsUniversity of Manchester's Surveillance of Work-related and Occupational Respiratory Disease (SWORD) reporting system has been interrogated over the period 1992-2017 to define the incidence rate of OA cases that can be ascribed to the UK land-based processing sector, and the seafood species implicated. Airborne allergen monitoring data undertaken at Health and Safety Executive's laboratory from 2003 to 2019 have also been collated.ResultsThe estimated annual OA incidence rate in seafood processors was 70 [95% confidence intervals (CIs) 48.9, 91.1] per 100 000 workers compared with 2.9 (95% CIs 2.8, 3.1) in 'all other industries'. The annual calculated percentage trend in OA (1992-2017) was -8.1% (95% CIs -15.9, 0.4) in seafood processing showing a similar trend to 'all other industries' (mean -7.0%; 95% CIs -7.8, -6.1). Prawns and salmon/trout were notably implicated by SWORD as causative species related to OA. There is a general paucity of available UK airborne allergen monitoring data, particularly concerning processing salmon or trout. Available airborne monitoring for salmon parvalbumin in seven processors ranged between the limit of detection and 816 ng m-3 (n = 64). Available air monitoring levels of the major shellfish allergen (tropomyosin) during processing of crabs and prawns ranged between 1 and 101 600 ng m-3 (n = 280), highlighting that high levels of exposure can occur.ConclusionsThese data show an excess incidence of OA in the UK seafood processing industry during 1992-2017, with limited airborne monitoring data for the processing of prawn, crab, and salmon suggesting that significant exposure to major seafood allergens can occur in this industry. Further investigation of current levels of respiratory ill-health and the sources of allergen exposure are warranted.

Project description:BackgroundOccupational exposures to chromium (Cr), which can have adverse effects on immune function, have not yet been extensively investigated. Hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)), used in mineral tanning processes, poses a threat to the health of workers in the leather tanning industry.ObjectivesThe aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of long-term Cr exposure on the physical health and immunological parameters of male tannery workers in Bangladesh compared with a control group.MethodsA health examination was performed with tannery workers (N=195) and control subjects (N=125) by physicians, demographic data were recorded in questionnaires and peripheral blood samples were collected. Serum Cr levels were analyzed by an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), immunoglobulin (Ig)G, IgA, and complement components C3 and C4 were determined by nephelometry, IgE was measured by sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and complement function was assayed by bactericidal activity.ResultsThe mean duration of work exposure for the tanners was 9.4±7.1 years. Their body mass index (21.8±3.0 kg/m2), was not significantly different from the controls (22.7±3.2 kg/m2). The mean serum level of Cr in 30 long-term exposed tannery workers (26.97±21.11 μg/dL) was significantly higher than that of 30 randomly selected control subjects (7.38±6.81 μg/dL). The tannery workers had rough skin, rashes, itchy and decolorized skin, allergic diseases and respiratory illness, and had significantly lower levels of serum IgG, IgA, C3 and C4, but significantly higher levels of IgE than the controls. IgG, IgA and C3 levels were all inversely associated with Cr, while IgG, IgE and bactericidal activity showed an inverse correlation with duration of exposure.ConclusionsThe results of the present study suggest that chronic exposure to Cr is associated with impaired immune function in male tannery workers.Participant consentObtained.Ethics approvalThe present study was approved by the Ethical Review Committee of the faculty of Biological Sciences, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.Competing interestsThe authors declare no competing financial interests.
