Associations among neuroticism, self-efficacy, resilience and psychological distress in freshman nursing students: a cross-sectional study in China.

ABSTRACT:

Objectives

The current study examines the mediating roles of resilience and self-efficacy and the moderating role of gender in the association between neuroticism and psychological distress in Chinese freshman nursing students (FNSs).

Methods

A total of 1220 FNSs were enrolled from the Be Resilient to Nursing Career (ChiCTR2000038693) Programme and the following instruments were administered to them: NEO Five-Factor Inventory, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. A moderated mediation analysis and a generalised additive model analysis were performed.

Results

The direct and indirect effects of neuroticism on psychological distress were significantly mediated by self-efficacy (B = 0.200, 95% CI 0.001 to 0.039), resilience (B = 0.021, 95% CI 0.007 to 0.038) and the interaction between self-efficacy and resilience (B = 0.016, 95% CI 0.005 to 0.028). The interactions between neuroticism and gender (β = 0.102, 95% CI 0.001 to 0.203, p<0.05) and between resilience and gender were significant (β = 0.160, 95% CI 0.045 to 0.275, p<0.01). A non-linear and positive association was confirmed between neuroticism and psychological distress.

Conclusions

Self-efficacy and resilience significantly mediate the relationship between neuroticism and psychological distress. Gender moderates the relationships between neuroticism and resilience and between resilience and psychological distress.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the concept of psychological distress among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding its dimensions and characteristics of this phenomenon can enhance preparedness for future pandemics. Psychological distress has emerged as a significant mental health concern during the pandemic, with nursing students experiencing high levels of psychological distress caused by substantial disruptions in their educational environment.MethodThis study employed the Schwartz-Barcott and Kim's hybrid concept analysis model, integrating a systematic literature review with qualitative research to examine psychological distress among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The literature review included a comprehensive search across multiple databases, resulting in the identification of 60 relevant articles for data extraction. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were carried out with nursing students from the Army Nursing Faculty, and the data were analyzed which were analyzed using a directed content analysis approach. The findings from both phases were synthesized to provide a comprehensive definition of psychological distress in nursing students during the pandemic.ResultsPsychological distress among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic was analyzed through three key dimensions: antecedents, characteristics, and consequences. Antecedents included factors such as personality traits, demographic factors, social influences, and health-related conditions, with demographics standing out as particularly impactful. The characteristics of distress were categorized into emotional-psychological, cognitive, and physical symptoms, with sleep disturbances being especially prominent. The consequences encompassed both negative outcomes-like academic setbacks, social withdrawal, and physical health problems-and positive outcomes, such as post-traumatic growth, improved coping skills, and professional advancement. The findings offer a thorough understanding of the multifaceted nature of psychological distress and its effects on nursing students.ConclusionThe findings of this study explore the antecedents, characteristics, and consequences of students' psychological distress, providing essential insights for health policymakers and educational planners during similar pandemics. This data can inform the development, planning, and implementation of treatment and training systems designed to prevent such conditions in future pandemics. In essence, by identifying and addressing the underlying factors or antecedents of this distress, its occurrence in future pandemics could be effectively reduced.

Project description:BackgroundResilience, a person's ability to adapt to adverse events, is associated with positive outcomes, especially in the field of healthcare. Research into the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic may help to understand and combat the long-term mental health burden for trainees in health care.ObjectiveThis cross-sectional study aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic on health profession students' educational experiences, determine the association between their self-reported resilience and psychological distress and assess group differences between students from different graduate health profession programs in an academic medical center.MethodsGraduate health profession students completed a 44-question online survey and the 10-item Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10) during the COVID-19 pandemic period between January-March 2021. We used descriptive statistics, independent samples t test, Related-samples Wilcoxon signed rank test, Pearson correlations test and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) to analyze the data.ResultsMajority of respondents reported that COVID-19 had a negative impact on their education and caused a reduction in educational opportunities (76.6% and 73% respectively). Majority also reported feeling burned out, lonely/isolated, or frustrated by COVID-19 restrictions (70.0%, 67.4%, and 61.8% respectively). Students reported increased use of both avoidant and adaptive coping strategies during the pandemic. Higher resilience scores were associated with higher self-reported stress, fewer burnout symptoms, and better overall well-being.ConclusionThe COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected students in graduate health profession programs. Instructional quality, educational opportunities, institutional trust, peer socialization, and personal health and wellbeing were perceived to be negatively impacted. Students may require additional support and resources from their training programs to mitigate these concerns. Future studies should evaluate the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic among pandemic-era graduate health profession students.
