[Teaching digital competences in nursing education-a comparative analysis of the federal and state framework curricula].

ABSTRACT:

Background and objective

The digital transformation of healthcare requires changed competences in the nursing professions. The reform of nursing education opens up the opportunity to anchor the requisite content in vocational education. The framework curricula of the expert commission ("Rahmenpläne der Fachkommission nach § 53 Pflegeberufegesetz") form the basis for the federal states to create their own framework curricula. This paper examines to what extent and in what form the framework curricula take up digitalisation.

Material and methods

The framework curricula were investigated in an explicative-qualitative content analysis between August and October 2021. First, the frequency of previously defined keywords was determined. This was followed by a systematic context analysis.

Results

Merely six federal states had created their own framework curriculum; the others used the federal framework curriculum, which only addresses the acquisition of competences in the field of digitalisation to a small extent. Digitalisation was addressed to varying degrees in the federal state's own framework plans but only selectively overall. Recommendations for practical exercise formats were hardly given.

Discussion

The acquisition of competences in the area of digitalisation forms the foundation for later professional life and is an important component of the digital transformation. In the context of the possibility of modifying nursing education until 2024, the topic should be taken into focus more strongly. Improvements can also be made directly at technical and vocational schools as well as universities since the framework curricula are sometimes only of a recommendatory nature.

Project description:BackgroundHealth care systems and the nursing profession worldwide are being transformed by technology and digitalization. Nurses acquire digital competence through their own experience in daily practice, but also from education and training; nursing education providers thus play an important role. While nursing education providers have some level of digital competence, there is a need for ongoing training and support for them to develop more advanced skills and effectively integrate technology into their teaching.ObjectiveThis study aims to develop a needs-based support program for nursing education providers to foster digital competencies and to test this intervention.MethodsWe used a design-based research approach, incorporating iterative development with expert consultation to create and evaluate a support program for nursing education providers. Focus groups were conducted online to assess needs, and thematic content analysis was used to derive key insights. The support program was then refined through expert feedback and subjected to a feasibility and satisfaction test, with participant evaluations analyzed descriptively.ResultsSix main categories emerged from the focus groups, highlighting key areas, including the use of digital technology, ongoing support needs, and the current state of digitalization in nursing education. The support program was developed based on these findings, with expert validation leading to adjustments in timing, content prioritization, and platform integration. Preliminary testing showed good overall satisfaction with the support program, although participants suggested improvements in content relevance and digital platform usability.ConclusionsAlthough the feasibility test showed high satisfaction with the support program, low participation rates and limited perceived knowledge gain were major concerns. The results suggest that while the program was well received, further refinements, including a focus on competency-based approaches and addressing workplace barriers, are needed to increase participation and effectiveness of such interventions. The findings of this research can be used as a basis for the development of similar programs in other educational and health care contexts.

Project description:BackgroundThe practical sessions during skills laboratory simulation or clinical simulation are cores of nursing education. For this, different modalities have been devised to facilitate psychomotor skills learning. One of the commonly used educational material or instructional method to supplement skills learning across various disciplines is video-based teaching method. The opportunities of traditional two-dimensional video might be limitless and maximized with 360º virtual reality (VR) video, which offers immersive experience. This study incorporates 360º VR video into skills laboratory training as an alternative approach to face-to-face procedure demonstration.MethodsAn open-label, parallel (1:1), randomized controlled trial study was conducted among third-year undergraduate nursing students at Hiroshima University, Japan. The nursing students were block-randomized into 360º VR video and face-to-face demonstration group. After a 3-hour theoretical class of patient management on ventilator and closed-suction principles of mechanically ventilated patients in an Intensive Care Unit focused class, the 360º VR group watched the 360º VR video of closed tracheal suction (including oral) using the head-mounted display of Meta Quest 2 individually, while the face-to-face group attended the instructor's demonstration. A week after the skills laboratory, the students' psychomotor skills, knowledge, satisfaction, confidence were evaluated; the 360º VR video group's perception was explored; Wilcoxon rank-sum test was used to compare the two groups.ResultsA total of 57 students were analyzed; 27 students in the 360º VR video group and 30 students in face-to-face group. There were no statistically significant differences between both groups in skills, knowledge, and confidence. However, the face-to-face group had higher satisfaction level than the 360º VR group; this difference was statistically significant. In the 360º VR video group, 62% agreed that VR makes learning more interesting; more than half of students (62.5%) experienced VR sickness symptoms, and "feeling of drunk" is the highest. The students appreciated the ready to use, immersiveness, and realism; however, symptoms and discomfort, burdensomeness, and production limitations were improvements recommended.ConclusionAlthough face-to-face demonstration is the established method of teaching psychomotor skills to nursing students, the use of 360º VR video could achieve similar learning effect as an alternative approach.

Project description:IntroductionInformation literacy has become indispensable in navigating today's fast-paced media environment, with teachers playing a pivotal role in fostering reflective and critical digital citizenship. Positioned as future gatekeepers, pre-service teachers are the key to teaching media skills and especially information literacy to future generations of pupils. Given the particular challenges facing educators today compared to previous generations, it is important to determine whether the next generation of teachers feel adequately prepared and perceive themselves as competent to pass on these skills to their future pupils. However, previous research has highlighted deficiencies in formal learning opportunities at universities, underscoring the need for further investigation into pre-service teachers' information acquisition, evaluation practices as well as their perceived relevance to teaching, and person-related factors associated with their perceived competence in teaching information literacy.MethodAn online questionnaire was presented to participants, employing a mixed-method approach. We qualitatively examined the sources of information used by pre-service teachers and the evaluation strategies they employ, while quantitatively analyzing relationships between pre-service teachers' person-related factors and their perceived teaching competence. Participants assessed their perceived teaching competence, perceived learning opportunities, self-efficacy (general and related to information assessment), perceived informedness, selective exposure, need for cognition, need for cognitive closure, and mistrust in media coverage.ResultsData from 371 participants revealed digital media dominance in information acquisition over traditional sources, albeit with a prevalence of surface-level evaluation strategies over reflective approaches. Two distinct dimensions of perceived competence in teaching information literacy emerged: one focusing on information assessment while the other centers on the understanding of news creation processes. Perceived competence in teaching information literacy was significantly associated with self-efficacy in information assessment, perceived informedness, selective exposure to information as well as perceived learning opportunities focusing on information evaluation. Moreover, pre-service teachers employing diverse information evaluation strategies demonstrated a heightened sense of perceived competence in teaching information assessment.DiscussionOur results provide valuable insights into the multifaceted nature of pre-service teachers' perceived competence in teaching information literacy. Theoretical implications for future research as well as practical implications for teacher education and the structure of future curricula are discussed.
