Anion Binding Based on Hg₃ Anticrowns as Multidentate Lewis Acidic Hosts.

ABSTRACT: We present herein a combined structural and computational analysis of the anion binding capabilities of perfluorinated polymercuramacrocycles. The Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) has been explored to find the coordination preference of these cyclic systems toward specific Lewis bases, both anionic and neutral. Interaction energies with different electron-rich species have been computed and further decomposed into chemically meaningful terms by means of energy decomposition analysis. Furthermore, we have investigated, by means of the natural resonance theory and natural bond orbital analyses how the orbitals involved in the interaction are key in determining the final geometry of the adduct. Finally, a generalization of the findings in terms of the molecular orbital theory has allowed us to understand the formation of the pseudo-octahedral second coordination sphere in linear Hg(II) complexes.

Project description:A family of pyridyl functionalized arylacetylene C-H HB receptors were synthesized and binding interactions to perrhenate (ReO4 -) studied in the solid state. The protonation and alkylation state of the pyridine nitrogen dictate the location and denticity of the interactions. X-ray structures of neutral 1 and singly charged 2a+•ReO4 - reveal the formation of favorable self-complimentary dimers, owning to the presence of nitrogen HB acceptor sites. Dismissal of these dimers upon elimination of nitrogen HB acceptors on the receptor result in an array of multidentate C-H HB receptor-guest contacts.

Bis-Squaramide-Based [2]Rotaxane Hosts for Anion Recognition.

Project description:The first examples of bis-squaramide axle containing [2]rotaxanes linked via rigid aryl and flexible alkyl spacers synthesised using copper(I) catalysed active metal template methodology are reported. The halide and oxoanion binding properties of the [2]rotaxanes in aqueous-organic solvent media are examined through extensive 1H-NMR titration experiments to investigate the impact of integrating multiple squaramide motifs on the anion binding capabilities of the interlocked receptors. These studies reveal that the bis-squaramide rotaxane host systems exhibit enhanced halide anion binding capabilities relative to a mono-squaramide axle functionalised rotaxane, demonstrating a rare anti-Hofmeister bias halide anion selectivity trend in aqueous-organic mixtures and highlighting the efficacy of the potent solvent shielded hydrophobic interlocked binding pocket created upon mechanical bond formation. Notably, employing a rigid aryl linker between the two squaramide motifs in the axle component enables the rotaxane host to exhibit strong and selective binding of tetrahedral oxoanions. Conversely, a flexible alkyl spacer facilitates trigonal oxoanion selective recognition by the bis-squaramide [2]rotaxane.

Urea-Based Imprinted Polymer Hosts with Switchable Anion Preference.

Project description:The design of artificial oxyanion receptors with switchable ion preference is a challenging goal in host-guest chemistry. We here report on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) with an external phospho-sulpho switch driven by small molecule modifiers. The polymers were prepared by hydrogen bond-mediated imprinting of the mono- or dianions of phenyl phosphonic acid (PPA), phenyl sulfonic acid (PSA), and benzoic acid (BA) using N-3,5-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-phenyl-Ń-4-vinylphenyl urea (1) as the functional host monomer. The interaction mode between the functional monomer and the monoanions was elucidated by 1H NMR titrations and 1H-1H NMR NOESY supported by molecular dynamic simulation, which confirmed the presence of high-order complexes. PPA imprinted polymers bound PPA with an equilibrium constant Keq = 1.8 × 105 M-1 in acetonitrile (0.1% 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidine) and inorganic HPO42- and SO42- with Keq = 2.9 × 103 M-1 and 4.5 × 103 M-1, respectively, in aqueous buffer. Moreover, the chromatographic retentivity of phosphonate versus sulfonate was shown to be completely switched on this polymer when changing from a basic to an acidic modifier. Mechanistic insights into this system were obtained from kinetic investigations and DSC-, MALDI-TOF-MS-, 1H NMR-studies of linear polymers prepared in the presence of template. The results suggest the formation of template induced 1-1 diad repeats in the polymer main chain shedding unique light on the relative contributions of configurational and conformational imprinting.

Preparation and Characterization of Zinc(II)-Based Lewis/Bronsted Acidic Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Project description:Lewis/Brønsted acidic deep eutectic solvents (LBDESs) are a recent class of solvents that combine the two types of acidity. In some cases, this synergy leads to enhanced catalytic properties for many reactions and applications. For this reason, it is important to discover more LBDESs. In this work, we prepared and characterized four different zinc(II)-based LBDESs, mixing ZnCl2 and various Brønsted acids: acetic, glycolic, levulinic, and formic acids. Apart from the latter, for which the corresponding DES is not thermally stable, the samples have been characterized in terms of density, viscosity, and conductivity. Notably, as zinc(II) is a diamagnetic metal, all of them are suitable for NMR spectroscopy, for example, for kinetic and mechanistic studies.

Tris(pentafluoroethyl)silanol Derivatives and the Lewis Amphoteric Tris(pentafluoroethyl)silanolate Anion, [Si(C2 F5 )3 O].

Project description:While alkyl-substituted siloxanes are widely known, virtually nothing is known about perfluoroalkyl siloxanes and their congener species, the silanols and silanolates. We recently reported on the tris(pentafluoroethyl)silanide ion, [Si(C2 F5 )3 ]- , which features Lewis amphoteric character deriving from the pentafluoroethyl substituents and their strong electron-withdrawing properties. Transferring this knowledge, we investigated the Lewis amphoteric behavior of the tris(pentafluoroethyl)silanolate, [Si(C2 F5 )3 O]- . In order to examine such Lewis amphoteric behavior, we first developed a strategy for the synthesis of the corresponding silanol Si(C2 F5 )3 OH, which readily condenses at room temperature to the hexakis(pentafluoroethyl)disiloxane, (C2 F5 )3 SiOSi(C2 F5 )3 . Deprotonation of Si(C2 F5 )3 OH employing a sterically demanding phosphazene base allows the characterization of the first example of a dimeric triorganosilanolate: the dianionic hexakis(pentafluoroethyl)disilanolate, [{Si(C2 F5 )3 O}2 ]2- , implies Lewis amphoteric character of the monomeric [Si(C2 F5 )3 O]- anion.

Resorcin[4]arene-based multidentate phosphate ligands with superior binding affinity for nanocrystal surfaces.

The ligands effectively bind in at least a tridentate fashion at low surface coverage. The superior binding affinity is demonstrated using solution NMR spectroscopy and exceeds that of single phosphonates.

Strong Lewis and Bronsted Acidic Sites in the Borosulfate Mg3 [H2 O→B(SO4 )3 ]2.

Project description:Borosulfates provide fascinating structures and properties that go beyond a pure analogy to silicates. Mg3 [H2 O→B(SO4 )3 ]2 is the first borosulfate featuring a boron atom solely coordinated by three tetrahedra. Thus, the free Lewis acidic site forms a Lewis acid-base adduct with a water molecule. This is unprecedented for borosulfate chemistry and even for borates. Quantum chemical calculations on water exchange reactions with BF3 and B(C6 F5 )3 revealed a higher Lewis acidity for the borosulfate anion. Moreover, proton exchange reactions showed a higher Brønsted acidity than comparable silicates or phosphates. Additionally, Mg3 [H2 O→B(SO4 )3 ]2 was characterised by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Lewis Acidic Boranes, Lewis Bases, and Equilibrium Constants: A Reliable Scaffold for a Quantitative Lewis Acidity/Basicity Scale.

Project description:A quantitative Lewis acidity/basicity scale toward boron-centered Lewis acids has been developed based on a set of 90 experimental equilibrium constants for the reactions of triarylboranes with various O-, N-, S-, and P-centered Lewis bases in dichloromethane at 20 °C. Analysis with the linear free energy relationship log KB =LAB +LBB allows equilibrium constants, KB , to be calculated for any type of borane/Lewis base combination through the sum of two descriptors, one for Lewis acidity (LAB ) and one for Lewis basicity (LBB ). The resulting Lewis acidity/basicity scale is independent of fixed reference acids/bases and valid for various types of trivalent boron-centered Lewis acids. It is demonstrated that the newly developed Lewis acidity/basicity scale is easily extendable through linear relationships with quantum-chemically calculated or common physical-organic descriptors and known thermodynamic data (ΔH BF3 ). Furthermore, this experimental platform can be utilized for the rational development of borane-catalyzed reactions.
