An investigation of the efficacy of an eHealth nutrition intervention on lifestyle-related colorectal cancer risk in patients undergoing colonoscopy.

ABSTRACT: Interventions: This is a pilot 3-arm randomised controlled trial with the primary aim of investigating the efficacy of an enhanced eHealth nutrition intervention at reducing lifestyle-related colorectal cancer risk (as determined by the 2018 World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF)/American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) score) at 3 months, within patients undergoing colonoscopy. This will be compared with the efficacy of a standard eHealth nutrition intervention, and no intervention, at reducing lifestyle-related colorectal cancer risk at 3 months, within patients undergoing colonoscopy. Enhanced intervention group: Enhanced group participants will receive one 30 minute online consultation via Zoom with an Accredited Practising Dietitian, and a personal nutrition report generated through completion of the online Australian Eating Survey (AES), at baseline. The one-on-one online consultation with the dietitian, using a standardised format and informed by results of the AES nutrition report, will provide participants with personalised dietary advice, strategies, and resources to improve dietary intake over 3 months, in line with the 2018 WCRF/AICR Recommendations for Cancer Prevention. The personal nutrition report will contain specific information and feedback about the participants’ current dietary intake, including energy intake from core and non-core foods and drinks, macronutrient and micronutrient intake, and diet quality. The resources provided will include resources designed specifically for this study by a team of dietitians, as well as resources readily available from organisations such as the World Cancer Research Fund, Australian Government, Cancer Council, Cancer Institute NSW, and Nutrition Australia. Comment: This TNM model is described by the system of equations presented in (2), in the publication manuscript. Abstract: The natural sources of the vitamins, which come from a balanced diet (as recommended by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research) contribute to protecting the body from advancing progressive of cancer stages. Thus, in this study, we analyze the effect of the intervention of vitamins on delaying the growth of cancer cells based on the dynamics of a normal cell cycle when the tumor cells appear in a tissue as a resulting for progressing abnormal cells due to the weak response of the immune system. We developed a mathematical model, called tumor-normal-vitamins model (TNVM), which is governed by a system of ordinary differential equations and refers to two main populations normal cells and tumor cells. This model considers the intervention of vitamins as a moderating factor within thirty days. The models are discussed analytically and numerically by utilizing the Runge-Kutta method to simulate them. The results of the analysis and simulation of free model illustrate that the model will be stable if the tumor cells succeed in eliminating normal cells in the tissue. Whereas, the analysis and simulation of the TNVM showed a case of coexistence between normal cells and tumor cells occur if an individual consumes a regular rate of vitamins that have been simulated to be 87% per day from a natural food source. Even though the response of the immune system is weak, the daily consumption of enough vitamins can play an essential role in delaying the development of an early stage of cancer. This study contributes to the increasing awareness regarding a healthy diet to reduce the risk of some deadly diseases, especially cancer.

Reproduction of Fig. 11 was achieved by swapping the values of gamma and beta2 stated in the manuscript, i.e. gamma = 0.9817 and beta2 = 0.2291. Project description:Fungal fruiting body size and form are influenced by the ecology of the species, including diverse environmental stimuli. Accordingly, nutritional resources available to the fungus during development can be vital to successful production of fruiting bodies. To investigate the effect of nutrition, perithecial development of N. crassa was induced on two different media, a sparsely nutritive Synthetic Crossing Medium (SCM) and a natural Carrot Agar (CA). Protoperithecia were collected before crossing, and perithecia were collected at 2, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, and at full maturity 144 hours after crossing. No differences in fruiting body morphology were observed between the two media at any time point. A circuit of microarray hybridizations comparing cDNA from all neighboring stages was performed. For a majority of differentially expressed genes, expression was higher in SCM than in CA, and expression of core metabolic genes was particularly affected. Effects of nutrition were highest in magnitude before crossing, lowering in magnitude during early perithecial development. Interestingly, metabolic effects of the media were also large in magnitude during late perithecial development, at which stage the lower expression in CA presumably reflected the continued intake of diverse complex initial compounds, diminishing the need for expression of anabolic pathways. However, for genes with key regulatory roles in sexual development, including pheromone precursor ccg-4 and poi2, expression patterns were similar between treatments. When possible, a common nutritional environment is ideal for comparing transcriptional profiles between different fungi. Nevertheless, the observed consistency of the developmental program across media, despite considerable metabolic differentiation is reassuring. This result facilitates comparative studies that will require different nutritional resources for sexual development in different fungi.
